Obviously a poll running out of the Drupal London group may have slightly biased results but please add comments here or at http://groups.drupal.org/drupalcampuk if you have any thoughts about this event which is for the UK (not London).

Somewhere 'in the middle'

I get so fed up with things be arranged at one extremity or the other of the country - make it somewhere 'in the middle' so that travelling is a reasonable option of as many as possible.

That doesn't necessarily mean geographically in the middle, but weighted by where major collections of Drupalistas are.

Best of all worlds?

D/O advice on Organizing camps suggests that

Generally a camp is an extension of a meetup. You'll have a hard time holding an effective camp unless you have a strong meetup already occurring in your town.

On that basis, the fact that the Manchester 'crew' are already having meetups — if i've interpreted the chat correctly — it makes sense to have a camp there.

However, from a point of view of a meet-up for folks who don't have a.n.other druaplista in the same town....there may be a strong argument for choosing a 'central' or weighted location: for which purpose I would propose Bristol.

It's two hours from my part of Wales, two hours from London. 1+ from Birmingham and probably 2 1/2? from Manchester and going on the weighting of the poll, this might be the proverbial location to please most of the people, for at least some of the time...or the one that pleases none of the people any of the time??!!

Could such a "UK-wide" meet-up help to build enthusiasm and momentum for a Drupal camp?

shalom from wales!

I think a single event would be better than both London and Manchester. A University would make the most sense, perhaps somewhere like Warwick?

Lots, please!

Let's not limit ourselves here!

The main issue with location is having local people happy to organise the event.
There was a lot of chatting about DrupalCamps in Szeged, and the consensus was that DrupalCamps will happen in places where there are people willing to organise them.

So, rather than having a poll limiting us to one DrupalCamp at one time in one place, it might be better to say "if we hold a DrupalCamp in Location X, who'd be interested in coming along?"
Then you'd have some idea of whether you'd want to put the effort in of organising it.

We're keen on a Manchester DrupalCamp because:
a) There's an active user group here
b) We know people here who've organised similar events
c) We can probably get local funding
d) If we're going to organise it, it makes sense to make it as easy for us as possible.

Remember, the UK's not so large. There's buses and trains and things like that to help get us around! ;)

Agreed - if you organise a meeting in Manchester, that would be great, especially if there are lots of people there - I would be up for coming. I got a return ticket train from London to Manchester recently for £26 by booking early.

We shouldn't see the poll as limiting - it helps to identify other places where people might like to have a camp.

A poll on location for a Camp is almost a waste of time.

the consensus was that DrupalCamps will happen in places where there are people willing to organise them.

Never a truer word spoken.

Would Szeged have won a poll? I don't think so, but there were people on the ground willing to make it happen.

The first two meetups in Ireland took place in Galway, because there were people there willing to organise it.
No doubt we would have had bigger turnouts in Dublin, but that's neither here nor there.

The first Dublin meetup will happen soon.
As soon as a date and venue is set, we'll let people in the UK know, and maybe it might be of interest.

As mentioned, a few of the Irish people would make there way across to a UK Drupalcamp, depending on location, cheap flights, schedule etc.

I'll be happy to lend a hand in organising anything Manchester way...

I voted for Manchester too, seeing as I am sitting here in Manchester :-]

I'm still not quite sure what actually goes on at a camp. Is there any talks/presentations or something, or just organised chaos between users?

I may be able to organise an event at Kingston University. It's a 20 min train from London Waterloo, then about 15 mins on the bus.

Also easy to get to from M4, M40, M25 and M3.

Hello, I'm not in the UK, but this is the closest I'll come to a DrupalCamp, and I know others in Ireland would be keen to support and promote any large event in the region. The UK is large, and just like the US, I'd bet it could support more than one DrupalCamp as long as they are spaced far enough from each other in time. The US DrupalCon in the spring would preclude anything during that time, as some lucky folks from here might be able to go.

During Szeged, I was super keen to talk to both the London and the Manchester contingents. They both sound like they'd be different types of events. Both have unique ideas, and I don't think they would be stepping on the other's toes. I don't want to speak for Robert in London- but I loved the idea he was brewing up. I hope to hear more about it. But I also would like to see the Manchester group go forth, since they have started the planning.

In this case, I would have like to have been able to vote for London and Manchester. Finally, I put my vote in for Manchester because I've never been there- though I lived in London and love it dearly. And I bet it would be a little cheaper in Manchester for accomodation, just guessing. Those were my only personal reasons for voting that way.

NB: In Dublin, we're in the midst of planning a Drupal Meet-up on Saturday 8th November - most likely at a university location, and hopefully free. If anyone is interested in attending, or would like to cut your teeth on a presentation or workshop before a DrupalCamp in the UK, please post your interest!

My vote is for London and Manchester - would love to spend a weekend in Manchester.

I'm working on organising a London DrupalCamp, there are some interesting possibilities, which I'll post more info on once I get the details.

More volunteers needed methinks (even for small tasks)

I have seen how well Rob (Castello) has organised the Drupal UK events - really excellent every time - but having discussed various ideas I think it would be good for people to offer any little help they can. Most of the discussions point towards the conclusion that the biggest driving force for an event taking place is fellow drupallers actually dedicating a small amount of their time.

Personally I'm happy for myself and my staff to lend support to Rob or whoever else in any way we can - be it researching venues, speaking to various potential companies etc. and - time permitting - working on a web site (although the drupal.org site itself is more than sufficient initially to get things up and running)

Is anyone else prepared to commit a few hours? If so put your name down here... I'm sure the benefits of getting involved far outweigh any time spent.
