June is "Bring a friend to Docs" month!

During Docs Hour on IRC today, we thought up something a bit different to do for June...

June is "Bring a friend to Docs" month!

There are no issues tagged for a June sprint this time round, instead we're going to do a fun team building sprint to help get new people introduced and oriented with how to work on docs! Here's how it works:

  1. Find a friend who might be interested in working on docs (of course, if you're new yourself, just come join in!)
  2. Direct them to the Documentation Management page: http://drupal.org/documentation/manage (they will need to log into drupal.org first!)
  3. If they are:
    • More of a writer: filter for page status "Needs updating" or "Incomplete", and review/test/update the content.
    • More of an editor: filter for page status "Needs copy/style review" or "Needs dividing" - be sure to refer to the Style guide!
    • More of a developer: filter for page status "Needs technical review" or "Insecure code" (for that one be sure to refer to the Secure code reference), and make sure the content is accurate and using best practices.
  4. If you find a problem that is larger or you can't figure out the solutions to, and it's not already documented in the Issue queue, file a new issue describing as much as possible what's needed.
  5. When you complete a review and any needed fixes, set the page status back to "No known problems".

We'll be holding our usual Tuesday Docs hour every week if you get stuck, need reviews, or just want to touch base with the other Docs Team members. Let's get as many pages set back to "No known problems" as we can by the end of the month!

Prefer API Docs?

For programmers who work on API documentation, if you would like to introduce someone to writing API documentation patches, you can find an issue in the documentation component of Drupal core, tagged "Novice". Help walk them through working on the issue and rolling a patch.

Another great way to get a new API docs contributor started is to have them review patches. HedgeMage will be running an all-day patch review sprint June 12th - officially it will be on from 10:00am Central US time until they can patch no more - there will be people in a few different time zones, so it will be on all day across timezones. It will be held in #drupal-contribute, so please do join if you are working on API patches, or if you want to get someone new started on reviewing patches!
