Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • Friends newsfeed - morningtime
    • Running Drupal without a web server - Stefan
    • Update on Easter reuse site - LP
  • Xano on conference organising - Bart Feenstra (aka Xano) is visting NYC from the Netherlands has offered to give a talk on organising Drupal events including meetings and conferences. He'll be sharing experiences from the annual Dutch Drupal conference, held just last week.
  • Media Gallery (w/ Views 3 + Entity Views Attach, etc.) - likewoah ~20 min
  • Varnish - smerril ~20 min
  • Elements of Responsive Web - hansyg ~time??
  • Open Topic - suggest
  • n00b BoF - johnvsc (??)

Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide. Therefore, if your name is not on the list they will not let you in. Also, Signup closes midnight of the day before the event. We don't have the luxury to add "last minute" attendees.

I will be in NYC for 2

morningtime's picture

I will be in NYC for 2 months, and would like to meet other Drupalers.

If there is an interest, I could do a 5 min. lightning round on:
Creating a "friends newsfeed" using Heartbeat, Rules , User Relationships and Display Suite. I can show you the basic steps to integrate these modules for D7.

Seems pretty heavy for a lightning round...

winston's picture

Are you sure a regular presentation slot wouldn't be better? We're pretty strict on the 5 minute rule.

If you think you can do it in 5 though I'll add it there.

Thanks...

I'll keep it short, pointing out the basic steps, the problems and recommendations for improvement.

Morningtime--I'd be interested in a lightning talk on creating a "friends newsfeed"! That's something I have been thinking about with some recent projects of my own.

Lightning talk: Varnish. Why

Steven Merrill's picture

Lightning talk: Varnish.

  • Why you want need it.
  • How to use it in Pressflow 6 and the changes that have taken place in Drupal 7 to make it work out of the box.
  • How to administer it and what's coming up in varnish.module for Drupal 7.

Discuss the main concepts of responsive web design.

  • A flexible, grid-based layout
  • Flexible images and media
  • Media queries

Quick overview of the good parts and bad parts and how to incorporate them into Drupal.
What themes utilize the concepts now and which interesting ones are being developed.

I was struggling for a while to get a media gallery set up on my Web site, until I ended up just giving up. Didn't try Eva though.

with EVA (Entity Views Attach

likewhoa's picture

with EVA (Entity Views Attach A.K.A Views Attach) it's easy to create any type of media gallery paired with Views_Slideshow and some CSS magic. If I get enough interested I will present this at the meet up, and you'll see how easy it is with just views, eva and views_slideshow.

Xano on conference organizing?

winston's picture

This was added to the meeting agenda, but I don't see a comment proposing it.

I mean, we do two conferences a year in NYC + we have 3 recurring monthly meetups.

Is this what folks want to see? Perhaps it should be a BOF instead of a presentation? If it is added as a comment, that gives folks a chance to weigh in on it before we add it to the agenda.

I won't take if off for now, but I'd like to know what others coming to the event think.

Hi Winston! Forest Mars asked

Xano's picture

Hi Winston! Forest Mars asked me to be a guest speaker next week. We discussed different subjects and he thought most attendees would value a presentation about conference organizing. I'm not sure who added it to the list, but here's a proposal anyway:

I've organized the last four (bi-)annual Dutch Drupal conferences, or DrupalJams, as we call them. They've grown from 40 attendees in October 2007 to 90 in March 2009 (the first one I organized) to around 250 in June 2011. As with any growing organization, we have hit bumps in the road and discovered what facilities make attendees happy. We are also trying to make every conference more professional than the previous one and so far we managed to do that without charging entrance fees.

I could give a short overview of the Drupal community in the Netherlands and how we work to set up these conferences and make them appealing to our target audience. Last year, I founded the Dutch Drupal foundation to help with the organization of DrupalJams. The foundation and the conferences are not tied together, but help each other just like the DA and DrupalCons. I can share our reasons for choosing to go for a foundation, rather than an association, and I can illustrate how it helps us organize DrupalJams.

Great presentation

Lightning: Drupal with Appserver in PHP

Hi. I am visiting from Hamburg, Germany and like to share an interesting setup with you guys. I'v recently managed to get Drupal running on Appserver in PHP. While it's not a production ready setup it gives some insight into Drupal architecture in general.

Lightning talk: Top 5 Modules for June

Live Streaming / Recording of meetup

duckx's picture

As discussed with forest, I have a friend with professional video equipment coming to film this meetup for those that can not make it. He's going to do live streaming depending on how the bandwidth is... if not it will just be recorded and uploaded to youtube. lets see how this turns out... the main issue with recorded presentations using lower end cameras is the audio due to the size of the room and no external mic. this problem should be resolved this time.

Lightning Round: Updated info on waste exchange site

LP's picture

I'm not sure this is meetup-appropriate, but..
I have updated info on my proposal of a waste exchange site, as mentioned @ camp, and in another post in June.

I visited Build It Green (http://bignyc.org), and discussed their operation, and internal needs to support better workflow. Because of their needs, they may be able to sponsor work that could at least in part be made available for re-use by others.

I'd be prepared to give a 4-5 minute review of their operation, and the existing NYC waste exchange site, to see if anyones interested in being involved.

No, there would be no real Drupal showcasing or explaining in this talk, only perhaps a few mentions of appropriate modules that some may not be familiar with.

haha, did you talk to Forest

c0psrul3's picture

haha, did you talk to Forest there? (not our f). I've known him for a while now, he's a cool dude.

keep me in the loop with that communication directly please ;)

Hello, it's Romy from LA.

I am quite excited to attend this event. It would be my first NY meetup after flying in two weeks ago.

I hope to see familiar faces, meet new acquaintances, and discuss systems administration.

Oh, and of course- Drupal.

Great meetup last night

roseba's picture

I enjoyed it immensely. It had a really nice balance of topics hitting all Drupal specialities. I'd like to see more balance like this.

I look forward to seeing the video when it's posted so I can direct the links to those who were unable to attend.

Thanks to Kenny from aveventstream for volunteering to record this professionally. He said he'll have each session cut up and uploaded to youtube by end of the week. Hopefully we will get to do live streaming on the next meetup.

we post these to archive.org? and tag them appropriately?

duckx's picture

yea we can do that.. wats the difference from archive and youtube? i would imagine youtube would be more accessible via searches?

+1 for archive.org

likewhoa's picture

posting stuff to youtube is good because it gets more traffic but i think having an account on archive.org and just using that for meetup videos would be best since they allow us to set a license for the content and access to video downloads etc while on youtube it's just there. Archive.org was made for creative minds to share their content, not just videos but also music.

duckx's picture

good to know.. ill let him know.

+1 Archive.org

LP's picture

Archive.org:
+ Associate license with content
+ Automatic creation of alternate encodings and sizes from source files
+ Doesn't require plugins or hacks to download movies
+ Readable short URLS based on the file name, so we could have NYCD-- or whatever.
Movie FAQ here.

Archive.org:
- Videos will appear in the general google search, but apparently not in the "videos" refined search.

I've done dual uploads in the past, with the archive.org link in the youtube description field.
We could adopt a tag to unify the stuff. NYCDUG/DrupalNYC/GDONYC or whatever

Feature package for media gallery presentation

likewhoa's picture

I have gone and created a feature for the media gallery I created at this meetup. The instructions for setting this up are

  • Download and Configure Drupal 7 core (-dev prefer)
  • Download https://weboperative.com/downloads/drupal/likewhoa_mediagallery-7.x-1.0.tar and extract to your sites/all/modules directory.
  • Download and enable the features-7.x-1.x-dev module
  • Go to admin/structure/features and install all the module dependencies (sorry I didn't setup an install profile but will eventually for a more detailed media gallery setup)

    Using drush it would be:
    drush -y dl auto_nodetitle-7.x-1.x-dev ctools-7.x-1.x-dev libraries-7.x-2.x-dev mediaelement-7.x-1.1 nodereference_url-7.x-1.x-dev pathauto-7.x-1.x-dev references-7.x-2.x-dev views-7.x-3.x-dev views_slideshow-7.x-3.x-dev conditional_fields-7.x-3.x-dev eva-7.x-1.x-dev token-7.x-1.x-dev for those that don't use DRUSH, you can just manually download these into sites/all/modules and enable in admin/modules

  • Enable the feature module called likewhoa_mediagallery
  • ?????
  • PROFIT!

CONS: The only things that didn't get exported into the feature is the conditional fields dependencies which you can just rebuild at admin/structure/dependencies and it shouldn't be hard to figure out. The 3 dependencies you need to create are for the 'audio, image & video' fields in the media content type ;)

Good luck and enjoy, next month I'll talk about drush,drush_make,install profile and features.

Greetings from across the ocean

Stefan Freudenberg's picture

I have pushed the Drupal I modified to work with Appserver in PHP to github finally. If you are interested check it out: https://github.com/freudenberg/drupal-on-aip

Recorded session for Drupal July 2011 uploaded.

duckx's picture

So we finally got the darn thing edited, labeled, intro-ed and uploaded to archive.org and youtube. Some improvements that Kenny (the camera guy) suggested is to have a separate feed that goes into another camera to record the presentation portion. For this we would need a Y video splitter. The audio was perfect compared to our own cameras we record with. I can see why no one bothers uploading this stuff or edits it. It takes a good amount of time...

Any other suggestions?
