Agenda

Theme for the Night: DrupalCamp LA 2011 preview

Presentations:

Planning a presentation for DrupalCamp LA, August 6-7, 2011? Come give a lightning talk to preview your topic and get feedback before the camp. Leave a comment below with your topic.

If you'd like to give a lightning talk, presentation, announce a job position or ask any questions of the group, please leave a comment below and plan to come a few minutes early. If presenting, be sure to bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.

And...? Do you have a presentation? More coming soon...

Users Helping Users

The meetup begins at 7pm but the doors open a little earlier at 6:30pm for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal. Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bonafide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!

Lightning talks

We have time as well for lightning talks, which are 5 minute presentations from attendees who would like to share something with the group. It'd be great if you have a lightening talk that fits with the evening's theme!

As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.

Job announcements and open Q&A

Everyone has a problem every now and then and the open Q&A session is a chance for attendees to divine answers from the collective wisdom of the group. This is also an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.

Raffle! Prizes! Collect them all!

We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors in the Los Angeles area and around the world. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers.

Breakout Groups

Time-depending, at the end of the evening we'll split up into groups (sometimes called BoFs, or birds of a feather) and each group can jump into a particular topic. The topics for these BoFs so far have ranged from high performance websites, Features-driven development, PCI compliance and general "getting started" discussions.

Wrap up and Drupal After Dark

Several of us may be going to a local restaurant or bar for a Drupal After Dark afterward. Leave a comment below if you have ideas of a possible bar or restaurant that is nearby.

Looking Ahead

For next month, if you have an idea for something you'd like to learn, post a comment below, or better yet suggest a presentation idea! ... and if you see a topic you'd like to present, post a comment or contact us! Depending on remaining time, we'll have lightning talks, job announcements, break-out groups, and networking. Oh, and of course raffle prizes!

Entity Cache?

BTMash's picture

I don't know if I can make it out that evening yet (though I'd really like to) but I'd like to give a talk on the new Entity Cache, a performance enhancement module for Drupal 7 if people are ok with it? I can try and couple it with a site that is going to be launching soon (maybe even have launched?) if we want something more fleshed out.

Sounds great, hope you can

Slides posted online

Thanks for letting me present (again). It was a lot of fun trying a different presentation style (and plugging my presentations at DrupalCampLA) :D I've now posted the slides up on slideshare at http://www.slideshare.net/BTMash/entity-cache.

20 tools I use

christefano's picture

I'd like to give presentation on the tools I use for Drupal development. To mix things up, I'll do this Pecha Kucha-style, in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each.

This is the format that Ignite conferences use. Does anyone want to try doing this for a session or two at DrupalCamp LA? It might be fun for a bunch of us to get together and give a flurry of lightning talks (that are each 6 minutes and 20 seconds long) at a session on a given subject.

Great! Looking forward to

I wish I was around for this.

I wish I was around for this. When I finally settle back in LA I would love to get into this once a month as I ind the format quite inspiring and always leaving them wanting more. Consider me in on future runs of it.

I learned a lot from trying

I learned a lot from trying this new format. I think I'll focus on a single theme next time ("20 modules I use" or "20 OS X apps I use") instead of covering a large number of seemingly random tools.

Here's the list of tools I covered:

Auto Toggle Tabs, the tool I used to advance the "slides" (browser tabs, really), didn't have a 20 second interval... I definitely wanted more than 15 seconds per slide that it gave me. So, here's a copy that's been updated to include a "20 seconds" option:

It also works with Firefox 5.

During the Users Helping Users part

christefano's picture

During the Users Helping Users part of this meetup, a few of us will be working more on the SCALE 10x site that we worked on today at the Droplabs barnraising. Check out the discussion we've had so far at http://groups.drupal.org/node/162729 and join us!

If there's interest, we can also do a talkback later during the meetup of how the barnraising went and what was learned about Drupal 7. For example, I was surprised to see that only 2 modules we installed actually had full release versions (i.e. 7.x-1.0 instead of 7.x-1.0-beta1).

Hide the children, because Mike Stewart, Dan Carlson and I will give an overview of a project we all worked on together for purveyors of high-quality audio products, Audyssey, Inc. ,http://www.audyssey.com.

Expect tears, expect laughter, expect dancing, expect heart-stopping suspense, expect controversy. We'll make this a quick one, but like all things Drupal, depends on how much beer there is. I'm not going to give anything away, but you MAY want to wear something water resistant and bring safety goggles. Just sayin'...
