Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • Control a facebook tab with Drupal + GoogleAnalytics ~ pal4life
    • Omega Topic - banghouse
    • HybridAuth - ericduran
    • SASSy System Stream Wrappers - snugug
  • 20 Min Talks
Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to.

    • Effortless Local Dev with Vagrant - smerrill
    • Responsive Web Design in D6 (Fusion) - alienresident
    • Go Away Daddy (Shared Hosting): Moving onto a VPS" No more WSOD! - gamerxgirl
    • Signup for a Full 20 Talk
  • We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.

This may be a good time to test drive a presentation before the upcoming Drupal Camp NYC 10, also think about target audience and experience level of your presentation.

Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide.

InDesign integration with Drupal

joebachana's picture

I've got a fairly quick demo to show on how to integrate Drupal directly with InDesign (CS5.5). It may take slightly longer than 5 minutes but not near 20. Let me know what you want me to sign up for. Will bring a few of my colleagues from DPCI to answer any questions about what we're trying to achieve.

Robbie,

Unfortunately I can't do this show-and-tell in November, I have to be onsite at a client in Colorado for a few days that week and won't be back. I'll submit this again in December - should be a more mature integration by then as well.

Make it a 20 min talk

robbiethegeek's picture

Try to make it atleast 10-15 mins of talk and then a quick Q & A

RobbieTheGeek

20 min talk it is

joebachana's picture

We can use that time to get people excited about what we're trying to do.

Hi,
How about controlling a facebook tab through Drupal ? Would you like to know how many people land on your facebook page and how many end up liking your page and how many do not?

Fangating is the activity with which when a user lands on a Facebook page will see an enticing message mentioning them the benefits of liking the page than just a bare wall.

Compare : http://www.facebook.com/PeoplesCommunityMarket vs http://www.facebook.com/dietpepsi. (I am not related to either).

We will learn how to do the following in less than 5 mins.
1. How to add a tab to a facebook page.
2. Embed a drupal webpage in a Facebook tab
3. Create a fan gate on your/ your organizations facebook page.
4. Show a different welcome content when fans sign up.
5. Adding Google Analytics to know how many fans like your page and how many walk away without liking it. (Facebook Insights is unclear about this).
I am a Drupal developer and learnt this for one of our projects.

Thank you. Please feel free

Thank you. Please feel free to bring your questions. I would love to hear on what more can be included for a 20 min talk in the future.

videos?

deleuje's picture

Do you guys have videos of these sessions?
I live in Istanbul, Turkey and I will never be able to make it to a DrupalCampNY :(

And if there is a site with DrupalCamp and similar type of learning content (videos) I'd appreciate a link.

Thanks!

Render API caching

Steven Merrill's picture

This is a 20-minute talk about the new Render API in Drupal 7 and the options for caching with it.

So long as you are using render arrays for your blocks and page callbacks, it is now very easy to find expensive code paths and cache them with a number of different granularities without needing to write your own cache_get() and cache_set() calls.

I'll also even show my simple memcache/ESI prototype that I'm working on (http://drupal.org/sandbox/smerrill/1287900) that uses this new API.

I've been stalking your

I've been stalking your memcache/ESI prototype. I'd love to talk about it.

Cool - perhaps we can BoF

Steven Merrill's picture

Cool - perhaps we can BoF after. It's kinda borked at the moment, but it should be possible to serve up certain classes of ESI content without a bootstrap from memcache, and I think that's pretty rad.

Subject change

Steven Merrill's picture

Everyone,

I've been working a LOT with Vagrant lately, so I would like to switch my talk to be about that. We could still talk about Render API cache and memcache / ESI later on outside.

Proposing lightning talks on

banghouse's picture

Proposing lightning talks on any of the following:

Using Omega Tools to create a subtheme in Omega
Adding a custom region or zone to an Omega theme
Using Context to trigger custom layouts in Omega
Using Context to trigger dynamic block placement in Omega
How to make images "responsive" in Omega
How to make slideshows "responsive" in Omega

Considering how quickly my 5 minutes went last time I am trying to break down my presentation into smaller pieces.

Considering how much

hansyg's picture

Considering how much effort is being put into making a solid solution for "responsive images". See here, here and here.

I'd be interested in what solutions Omega is offering, and if it handles different image/page loads for different devices or how it handles serving up different images.
Not sure that can be through talked about in 5 mins though ;)

I am interested in using 20

skyredwang's picture

I am interested in using 20 minutes to present a fun and free product that we developed based on 100% Drupal & Modules on d.o : a solution to Create, Share, Store and Update QR-Codes http://qr.insready.com/ . Since I am in the other half of the world, I will need someone to help me to do the Skype Screen Sharing and hook it up with the projector in the main conference room.

I am excited to participate again in DrupalNYC meetup :)

There was a great Mobile

There was a great Mobile Monday meetup recently about barcodes, QR codes, Microsoft Tags etc. Thanks for keeping in touch with your friends in NYC!

Responsive Web Design in D6 (Fusion)

alienresident's picture

I am interested in sharing my experiences in trying to make a responsive web design for the DrupalCampNYC site without using Omega. COD is still in D6 and uses Fusion—not that there's anything wrong with that!—so you can't simply change to Omega 7.3.x to give your users a responsive design.

Topics I'll cover:

    A. Making Fusion Responsive
  • Adding media queries via the theme's .info
  • Removing css files through a preprocess function
    B. Making it work for IE 7 & 8
  • Re-ordering IE only stylesheets through a preprocess function
  • Using CSS3PIE to add some CSS3 love to IE 7 & 8

I used Sass and Compass to help with the css madness but these techniques are not reliant on Sass or Compass it just makes it a lot easier.

I am thinking 20 mins but I can reduce it to 5 and focus on one part. Whatever works best for time and interest. Also by then I should have most of the remaining bugs fix in the DrupalCampNYC theme :)

DO WANT - I'm interested in

DO WANT - I'm interested in the full 20 - Fantastic job on the camp site BTW!

Record this?

Would be very helpful to have this session recorded. The NJ Camp in February may use COD and it would be great to have this info at the ready. Thanks for the great work on the site!

I am interested in hearing

I am interested in hearing about Fusion and Omega pros and cons

If people are interested in

Snugug's picture

If people are interested in more SASS stuff, I'd be happy to do a lightning round on some of the more advanced SASS stuff, maybe on lists and control directives (arrays and loops in CSS!)

I can help out at the n00bie table tooooooooo

Disregard - I can't make it as it turns out. Somehow Wednesdays are cursed for me...

bummer

HybridAuth (lightning round)

ericduran's picture

Hey,

If there's still space I'll like to do a quick lightning round on an HybridAuth module I've been working on. For simple SSO within Drupal. (Facebook, Google, Twitter authentication )

I lost power during the storm

Snugug's picture

I lost power during the storm and am currently out of state. If power isn't restored by tomorrow night/Wednesday morning I'm not going to be able to make it to the meetup. Will update this with my status as to whether or not I can come.

It looks as if my power won't

Snugug's picture

It looks as if my power won't be restored until the end of the week so, unfortunately, I won't be able to attend, so please take my talk off of the schedule. If you want to learn about advanced SASS, you'll just need to come to the session at Drupal Camp NY!

Good news everyone! I'm going

Snugug's picture

Good news everyone! I'm going to be able to come tonight! I'll jump back on the remaining lightning talk again :P

If there's still a a spot

geekgirlweb's picture

If there's still a a spot open I'd like to do a 20 minute talk on "Go Away Daddy (Shared Hosting): Moving onto a VPS" No more WSOD! :)

Different options for VPS Stacks
i.e.

  • LAMP - Linux Apache MySQL PHP
  • LEMP - Linux (Engine-x)Nginx MySQL PHP
  • LLMP - Linux Lighttpd MySQL PHP

Basic command-line

Thanks!

I'm not going to make it.
