Thanks for the opportunity to present at the LA Drupal Users Group meeting. This was an introductory talk on how some of the technologies Sun is working on are relevant to the Drupal community and how it is all open source. Technologies covered included:
- Netbeans (IDE for PHP, Drupal Modules and Themes - http://netbeans.org
- Drupal Specific Netbeans module at https://nbdrupalsupport.dev.java.net/ )
- VirtualBox (Virtualization Environment - http://virtualbox.org)
- JavaFX (Up and coming Open Source competitor to Flash - http://Javafx.org)
- MySQL (DB often used with Drupal - http://mysql.org)
- OpenOffice (Open Source Office Suite - http://openoffice.org)
- OpenSolaris (http://OpenSolaris.org)
With all of that, I forgot to mention our Open Source web server. This is the web server from the Netscape days that Sun purchased, updated and open sourced. For more information on using it with Drupal see http://wikis.sun.com/display/Drupal/Sun+Value-Add+for+Drupal.
Sun has a wiki for Drupal Synergy discussions at http://wikis.sun.com/display/Drupal/Home
One question that came up after the talk was on Sun Equipment and discounts. Sun does have a program aimed at start ups call "Startup Essentials". It is aimed at Startups that are looking for assistance with purchase discounts on servers, storage, and hosting. Also, open source software, technical assistance, and funding assistance are all included.
There is no obligation to purchase anything.
If you would have questions on any of this or would like more info, feel free to post here. Next steps are some deep dives on some of the topics. Let me know your interests.
Thanks,
-Tom

Startup event in El Segundo - March 9, 2009
At the risk of sounding like a sales pitch (although we aren't in this group to sell anything), I wanted to let you know about a local event for Startups sponsored by Sun.
See details here and decide if it's the right thing for you.
