Final list will be given to the venue at 10pm on March 6th (the evening before the meetup)

Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • Redesign of Healing Thresholds Autism Therapy ~ dankohn
    • Lightning Talk homepage Carousel ~ alienresident
    • What is Dreditor Good For? (testing/reviewing a patch) ~ bleen
    • Template Field ~ zroger
  • 20 Min Talks
Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to.

    • MSKCC.org case study ~ jrockowitz
    • recruiter distribution run down ~ likewhoa
    • New SASS responsive theme ~ Snugug
    • Search API in Practice: Social Networks ~ careernerd
  • We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.

Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide.

I'd like to do a 20 minute on

Snugug's picture

I'd like to do a 20 minute on a new responsive base theme built with Sass+Compass based on some old-school Typographical principals. Doesn't have a name yet (at least not until I'm able to take over the namespace on D.O) but it's the thing I was showing off at SandCamp/DrupalCamp NJ.

As a bonus, if I've got the time, I'll show off Borealis that should go nicely with the Field Template stuff we're going to be talking about.

recruiter distribution run down

likewhoa's picture

I would like to demo an install profile which utilizes several modules to produce a "Job Posting" site using modules like rules for handling applicant and recruiter registrations,field_collection for collecting entities within entities within entities A.K.A entity inception, search_api for connecting apache solr & search_api_saved_searches for notification on new searches.

I will go over all aspects of the site, including how the custom rules work to handle field comparisons and how to setup apache solr with the search_api module and go over usage of the field_collection module.

This prezi should take between 15-20mins but I will try to do a full 20mins so that I can demo each modules integration.

Search API in Practice: Social Networks

jon pugh's picture

I can give a 20 minute talk about how I used Search API + Views, Facet API, and Entity API to build a simple social network and user directory for my latest client.

In that time I should be able to go through the entire setup process for Search API, review what it really is and what it can be leveraged to do, including:

  • Building a "Wall" for a user profile, allowing users to write nodes "to" each other in public view.
  • Building a "Feed" listing all posts by all users you are Following (with flag.module)
  • Building a "Directory" page that helps users find each other, based on searching and Facet Browsing
  • Extending Entity "properties" for fun and profit.

I'd like to focus on how Search API works and how it can be leveraged for just about any project, and how it's not really just for searches at all. I see that there may be some overlap with likewhoah's idea, so let me know what you think we should do!

likewhoa's picture

Since I haven't already made the prezi, I will compromise and just go over the rules of the job site, usage of field_collection to hold resume information, apache sorl installation in Gentoo Linux and search_api_saved_searches info. My prezi will be mostly a demo of the apache solr integration with search_api.

Look forward to your prezi, Enjoy your weekend! party hard :D

20 Min Talk: MSKCC.org case study

jrockowitz's picture

Last week, I posted my case study (http://drupal.org/node/1442472) for the MSKCC.org website on Drupal.org. I would like to do a 20 minute talk (15 min presentation with 5 min. questions) that walks-thru some of the back-end administrative features that I could not cover in this written case study. Here is my general outline (http://thebigbluehouse.com/node/29). My goal is to help newbies overcome some initial hurdles with building a Drupal site, while giving seasoned developers some new ideas.

If anyone is interested in any specific topics I am open to adjusting my presentation. Also, I will make myself available for questions after the presentation and at the pub.

Thanks,
~jake

This sounds very interesting.

Snugug's picture

Now that I think about it, a lightening talk on the different philosophies for responsive design (fixed vs fluid (sometimes called adaptive vs responsive) layout, device breakpoints vs content breakpoints) would be a good primer for my talk, and more importantly, something that I've found tends to get brushed aside in mobile/responsive talks.

Lightning Talk request

dankohn's picture

I'd like to do a 5 minute lightning talk on the 3.0 redesign of Healing Thresholds Autism Therapy http://autism.healingthresholds.com. Our 2.0 site was a Drupal Showcase a couple years ago. I'd like to talk about what we've learned about SEO and site design since then, and what we're aiming to achieve with this redesign (the redesign should be live by then, but otherwise I will demo from our dev server).

I would like to propose a lightening talk on some tips & tricks for testing & reviewing patches on D.O.

Can somebody give a

capellic's picture

Can somebody give a presentation on the Media module for Drupal 7? The landscape seems "unstable"-- for example there seems to be no way to organize media. Media Browser Plus is very buggy. Media 2.0 shows a lot of promise, but it's unstable-- they say so and I can verify. There is this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud5s-sW5srE) that showed up on YouTube over 2 years ago with the desired functionality, but it's not in the Media module.

And judging by the posts in the Media group, it appears that getting a grip on the landscape and roadmap is a big challenge. http://groups.drupal.org/media

While I would love to have a central media library for media re-use, it doesn't seem to have a ton of integration support. The Insert module was the latest module I discovered that didn't support the Media File Selector widget and doesn't plan to. http://drupal.org/node/1205856

Anybody with a good understanding of this landscape give us some tips as to what path forward we should choose?

Topics???

aapps's picture

I am still not aware of the exact schedule and topic will be covered in this Meetup. I do not get the lightning round topic that sounds like the topic of this meetup. What the exact schedule of the topics from 6.30 to 9 p.m.?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Here is the general rundown...

robbiethegeek's picture

Welcome
Introductions (everyone who you are, what you do with Drupal)

LIGHTNING ROUNDS - 5 minutes to talk about a single topic generally to expose, shine a light on or show off something you are working on, the idea that is supposed to be a quick flash of information.

Redesign of Healing Thresholds Autism Therapy ~ dankohn
testing/reviewing a patch ~ bleen

20 Min Talks - these are longer topics in more depth - 20 minutes is the length.

New SASS responsive theme ~ Snugug
recruiter distribution run down ~ likewhoa
Search API in Practice: Social Networks ~ careernerd
MSKCC.org case study ~ jrockowitz

We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.

Thanks

Thank Robbie,

Yes I am a Drupal beginner. I have attended the SASS training session in the Drupal Camp at NYC on Dec-10th and some other sessions for the beginners. It would be great if I can get together with a group for the beginners rather than jump into the really complicated.

I am not sure how to recognize group of beginners since this would be my 1st monthly meetup.

Thanks.

No organization needed on

Snugug's picture

No organization needed on your part, a Drupal Beginner BoF is held every meetup, so all you would need to do is go join it when the Master of Ceremonies says it's breaking off.

Would it be weird if I made the trip from CT? I live in Stamford, but work all over the tri-state area. The March 7 schedule looks interesting...

Jackson, not weird at all. I'm commuting in from NJ and once made the trip from Stamford for the November meetup.

Thanks!

That's great! I figure what better way to meet other Drupal dev's and users. Plus I lived in the city a few years ago. I saw there's a Stamford group too, which I'll be checking out soon. I want to get more involved with the Drupal community at large. I've been working with it since before 4.x and love the project.

See you all soon!

I still live in CT and

I still live in CT and commute back and forth too. There isn't much activity in the Stamford group. I think most people just come into the city for it.

Lightning Talk homepage Carousel

alienresident's picture

I can do a Lightning Talk on building a homepage carousel. Using a bunch of modules (views, views_slideshow, cck, imagecache, nodequeue etc) and managing deployment using features. Drupal 6 but the recipe would translate well enough to D7.

I know we have talked about something similar in a previous meetings but it's a popular site functionality request. If anyone wants to know more after 5 mins—I can go in to detail in a breakout session.

I think last night's meetup

robbiethegeek's picture

I think last night's meetup was pretty awesome, for those that led sessions thanks for the content and expanding people's knowledge. Those attendees that weren't presenting thanks for the questions and interest, and if you didn't attend last night we hope you will in the future. Drupal is nothing without community and the Drupal NYC community is amazing.

Hope to see you at the playday,

Yeah! Thanks a lot for everyone presenting. Especially loved Jonathan's Search API talk as he presented pretty much exactly the kind of stuff I'm diving into next! Really useful.

Also, as a fresh-off-the-boat New Yorker, I'm really happy to see what an incredibly active and professional community there already is and that it seems to be expanding.

Looking forward to further events.

The presentations were all very good, and the discussion outside was also very interesting, as always.

Great job, everyone!

Hope to see you at the Playday right after DrupalCon!

One of the best meetups ever

joebachana's picture

Kudos to all the presenters and to Robbie for being a terrific emcee! The group is growing rapidly and I'm wondering if it would be heresy to suggest a larger venue (joecowers@impending-backlash.ouch) for these in the future. Perhaps one where the BoFs can happen without overpowering the main room with the noise from really spirited conversations.

+1 on a bigger venue or at

likewhoa's picture

+1 on a bigger venue or at least start the BoF late in the meeting so that it doesn't disturb the 20minute talks. I had several people tell me that they couldn't really listen to presenters because of all the noise outside. Organizers please control the crowd outside, chatter should be done at the bar not while sessions are going on...

bending technology to fit businesses.

chattertocks

joebachana's picture

@likewhoa honestly I feel that the chatter is every bit a part of the monthly meetup as the presentations themselves. Not more or less, but the conversations happening out in the lobby area are just phenomenal and constructive. I'm not diminishing the importance of the formal presentations, which are ALSO really essential. Just the composite experience is what the meetups are about.

My earlier point wasn't that organizers can control anybody - rather, we may have to admit that we've outgrown this (free) venue. I'm happy to help scout out other venues, but only if the group as a whole agrees that it is worth exploring.

solutions

forssto's picture

I can totally see what @likewhoa means as especially during the last two talks, it was a bit hard to hear what was going on in the main presentations.

HOWEVER, this was easily remedied by moving to the front of the room. I think this problem could be solved with two pretty pragmatic tweaks:

1) Try to suggest that people keep moving in and out of the conference room during sessions to a minimum and make sure to close to door quick when doing so. The problem really was major only when the door was wide open.

2) Encourage people to move in front when space clears up. I had no problem hearing and enjoying the last two sessions after positioning myself better.

CTO at Kollabora - http://www.kollabora.com

First, I did try to quiet

robbiethegeek's picture

First, I did try to quiet down the folks that were outside of the main room. This happens every year when the weather starts to get better, there is a surge of attendees. I think that the chatter is extremely important to the meetup, maybe a little quieter but without it we lose a huge part of what is making the NYC Drupal community special. The ability for impromptu BoFs to happen after a talk and for people who are interested to do a deeper dive on a subject is fantastic. People come out to these meetups for lots of reasons, some to learn, some to teach or some combination of the two, but there is also the friendships, people looking to hire, people looking to get hired (I don't want this to turn into a meetup with tons of headhunters, personally I feel the social meetup could be better for that). That we can have a new 2 Drupal BoF where people of all levels can ask questions is different and unique to the NYC meetup, maybe a practical set of better practices to attendees needs to happen. When the room starts to empty out please move up, if you leave the room please close the door behind you, please keep the chatter down to a dull roar, please don't talk right outside the door.

All of that being said, I think we should take a deep breath, and enjoy a successful meetup that I received a lot of positive feedback about from people on the way out, on the way to the bar and at the bar afterwards.

@RobbieTheGeek

Wish I could have made it…

iamnoskcaj's picture

My last appointment ran late last night, and I couldn't make it in time. The presentations all sounded interesting. Hopefully there will be another meetup soon. I can't make it to Denver, so maybe after drupalcon there will be another meet up?

Cheers!

Cool meet up!

kristianb21's picture

Thank you presenters for the sharing! Thanks @robbiethegeek, awesome host!

I agree with @forssto, once people in the front left, I adapted, moved up and heard perfectly.

Just one pointer: I think if people sitting in the front know they will most likely head out before the end of the presentations, then they should sit toward the back so that they may smoothly walk away, perhaps with style too like a moon walk or something lol

Thanks to NYC community for setting this up and chattering up great ideas, advices, and so on.

De Art Is. And always will be.
