User group meeting

Cape Town drupallers, unite! We've been talking for a while about meeting up...so let's do it. Adrian will be demoing Ægir and we'll show off some cool stuff you can do with drupal. Please add your name to the list if you're coming :)

Although the original location was Mugg n Bean, we've moved it to Wembley Square (map) as it's quieter and more conducive to drupalling.

how about a bring n braai?

connectr's picture

hey guys,
just throwing an idea into the wind.. i've been a to a couple of meetups a mugg-n-bean and its all good, but what about having a bring and braai instead? its always nicer meeting up in a nice relaxed environment - especially over a couple of beers ;)

we would be happy to host it too - if you guys dont mind driving out to muizenberg..

mugg and bean / city bowl works better for me

adrian's picture

The drive out to muizenburg adds an extra 90 minutes to 2 hours to the time commitment.

wow. i really am capetonian now right?, if i consider muizenburg a day trip

screencast link..

Weird, now your link works?

lol, no probs man - as i said, just throwing an idea into the wind ;) where are you coming from? town to muizie is only a 25 minutes trip (each way).. but yeah, i know what u mean. i often turn down invites cos its just too much of a mission to go into town :P

How will we all fit?

Charles Oertel's picture

If we go to the M&B it will be difficult if the crowd is big, also the venue is likely to be noisy (and I'm a deaf grumpy old f*rt that doesn't much care for their food). I'm all for Muizenberg (it is 30minutes from town) and a bring and braai - largely because I live in Norfolk Park / Kirstenhof also.

@Quentin cool cool :) maybe

connectr's picture

@Quentin cool cool :) maybe we can arrange something out on this neck of the woods a month or so later..

@Jonathan we have wi-fi too ;0) and yeah, we're up on boyes drive.. we tried living in obs when we first moved back to CT, but after our office got cleared out we decided to move to greener pastures :P

@Charles I'm personally not a huge fan of mugg-n-bean as i find it a bit impersonal, but i'm sure i'll manage a couple of hours :P Looking at the response to this post, it doesnt look like there are THAT many drupalistas in CT, so M&B should be fine..

I'm fine either way M&B or

liliplanet's picture

I'm fine either way M&B or Muizenberg. Another option is Wembley Square with free wi-fi as well. Large space.

Suggested places for upcoming meetups

tessneale's picture

A great place to have meetups is Doppio Zero (Mandela Rhodes Place, Cnr Church Street & St Georges Mall): http://www.doppio.co.za

They have amazing food and are used to having meetups, big or small. They've hosted 27dinner, Facelook&Foodcook as well as the Cape Town Twestival.

wembley square might be a better option

adrian's picture

less people. more space.

quieter too

it's right across from gardens. just about.

in the building where virgin active is

Wembley square

Max_Headroom's picture

I don't want to change to much to the plans as I wanted to ensure that we get people to meet.
But since we've decided on a time and date, I'm sure we can look at an alternative for a venue.
Going out to Muizenberg is a great idea, but not for a meet and greet we are planning now.
I don't know M&B but I do know Wembley square and would agree it is great for a meeting.
I'm sure our 'insider' here can organise something at one of the places (Sinns? :) ).

At the meeting we can discuss future meeting places, especially if and when we have presentations and need more space.

(Thanks burningdog for getting the ball rolling again.)

Count me in

nielt's picture

A bring and braai might be a better (less formal, more personal) environment for a meet and greet than any restaurant or conference facility. Either way, I'm looking forward.

@burningdog Thanks for taking the initiative!

@adrian It'll be great to hear more about Ægir.

I think the general

connectr's picture

I think the general consensus is to meetup at wembley square this time, then arrange something less formal for the next meetup :)

yeah, wembly square should

theamoeba's picture

yeah, wembly square should be alright. tell me are there directions/website that i can go to because i have no idea where wembly square is. i also think that it will be a good idea for us to set a venue and then not change or the whole thing is going to blow over and leave people confused and unhappy. i dont know if wifi is a requirement of the venue, i think it is - especially if we are wanting to show of our "wares" :). i agree that the mugg & bean is a crap place, the menu is sucky and the noise is usually unspeakable. i suppose if we knew how many people were coming then we could entertain the idea of booking a place for a certain amount of time.

Wordpress Junkie Drupal Newbie

nomadone's picture

All I've ever done in Drupal is managed to get it installed, but with all the great stuff I've heard about it I definitely need to get into drupal development. So far my main focus is wordpress. Hopefully a newbiew like me will learn a thing or two at our meetup as well?

Webley Square it is!

burningdog's picture

I'd also wondered if Mugg n Bean was going to be a good venue, and it is - as long as we have 4 people or less. Luckily, we have more! Which makes Wembley Square a better option - and we can talk without having to shout over other people. I've changed this on the event listing.

@connectr: a braai is a great idea - I'm in! For the next meetup ;)

@adrian: do you need/have a projector to demo Ægir?

Thanks for the info!

burningdog's picture

Thanks for the info, Tess - it was great to meet up and hopefully we'll continue doing this more often. A good set of guidelines for ongoing meetups is Best Practices and Tips for Local Drupal User Groups. It talks about shared leadership, advertising, and content.

I'm away in Joburg for the whole of June - so someone else can step up and organise a June meetup if they'd like! Otherwise I'm happy to schedule one in July...

Sorry I missed it...
