Start:
2009-06-20 12:00 - 16:00 America/Indianapolis
Event type:
Training (free or commercial)

The 3rd Indy Drupal HackFest - Saturday June 20th noon-4pm.
At the offices of www.ProBlogService.com in the MidWest Internet Building Map Here - http://maps.google.com/maps?q=5348+N+TACOMA+AVE,+INDIANAPOLIS,+IN+46220&...
Come when you can leave when you have to. This is an open house setting where we get together and help each other with whatever needs are presented. Bring your questions, troubles, etc and get help. Views, CCK, theming, Module development, Server admin, taxonomy, etc.. Some one there will have an answer for you OR can help you find the answer.

Basically, we just show up and break off into smaller groups and tackle whatever issues are brought up first. If we ALL want to do the same thing then we can just let someone have the floor for 15 or 20 minutes for a presentation, then go back to smaller groups.
It's REAL casual...
This is GREAT for N00BS who want to see what all the buzz around DRUPAL is all about! :-)

The location will either be broadripple [where the last 2 HackFests were] OR at out usual location NW Indy at Promethius Consulting where our regular Monday meetings are held.

Reply to this post with some topics you are able to share at the HackFest. I know that Aaron and I have recently found TWO totally different ways to make great image galleries with CCK+Views. We're both anxious to show that off.

Check back here for updates on conversations on what will be going on at the HackFest this time around.

Tentative

I'll have a 2/3 week old baby so I may use this as an escape :)

Car Pooling From Cincinnati

captaindav's picture

Would anybody be interested in car pooling from Cincinnati to Indy for this meeting?

I would like to go but don't want to drive the entire 3+ hours round trip.

Of course car pooling would reduce everyone's gas expense and is good for the environment!

If interested, please let me know.

Taxonomy Menu

indytechcook's picture

I moderate a module called Taxonomy Menu (http://drupal.org/project/taxonomy_menu). Our good friend sdudenhofer has agreed to take it over as my new baby comes. I think it would be a huge help to him if we could hash out some of 146 open issues to make it more manageable. I've even be up for the idea of running this module as a group.

what do you want from YOUR hackfest?

dougvann's picture

Here's a big-ol-dump of ideas. Most of these I can speak about but some would be best done by others...
Beyond the obvious CCK and Views...

  • Editing files on the server with VIM editor [way too cool! Google it if you don't know what it is!]
  • Unfuddle [Harness the power of SVN repository AND ticket/time tracking!]
  • Ubuntu on your desktop [not as strange as it sounds]
  • Virtual box on your main system [a must if you want to easily use Windows AND Ubuntu!]
  • Using the Linux command line to install/update/manage a Drupal install
  • The DRUSH module [Y U Can't live without it]
  • Web Hosting... The necessary evil of being a web dev. [I'd like an open discussion about this one!]
  • Giving back to the Drupal community. [some things that ANYONE can do to help out!]

PLZ reply with any other ideas. These HackFests are turning into mini-DrupalCamps VERY quickly. Lets keep the caliber UP and increase the value of the gig. Attendees will want to come back and those who missed this one won't want to miss the next one!

Our creative colleagues

chucklima's picture

We ought to discuss ways of speaking to our creative colleagues about why Drupal is the tool their clients want and need. (I use Wordpress, why would I want Drupal???)

Services Module!

Brandonian's picture

I've had the "pleasure" of debugging a bunch of the sub-services in the Services module recently for projects. If anybody is interested in the Services module (ie, how to connect Flash/Flex/etc to Drupal), I could give a walkthrough.

Free Books! Free Pizza!

dougvann's picture

FREE - Pizza! {thank you www.problogservice.com / Mike Seidle!}
Free - 2 copies of Pro Drupal Development http://www.amazon.com/Drupal-Development-Second-Beginning-Professional/d... {thank you Chuck Lima!}
and 2 copies of Cracking Drupal http://crackingdrupal.com/ {Thank you John Wiley & Sons, Inc}

I may have missed it but I'm not sure which venue to arrive at-

Also, this time we'll arrive on time.

5348 Tocoma Ave 46220 Mid West Internet office building home of www.problogservice.com
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=5348+N+TACOMA+AVE,+INDIANAPOLIS,+IN+46220&...

Options for getting there...
Off of Keystone ave [some of you may be taking I-70 WEST into INDY their is a Keystone ave Exit that allows you to take Keystone NORTH]
The MidWest building is behind the pawn shop ON YOUR RIGHT (Which is EAST) off of Keystone and Armour street. NO LIGHT At THAT INTERSECTION
if you turn right on to Armour inbetween the pawn shop and the Liquor store, then you're looking at the back of the building that we are in. There's a lonely back door on a cinderblock building. Either park in back or pull around front and see the Drupal banner.

If you're coming from the North and heading SOUTH then you will see 54th and Keystone which IS a traffic light. You can take a left (to go EAST) on 54th and TOCOMA is right there. TAKE A RIGHT onto Tacoma for 50 yards and see the MidWest building on the right and hopefully my DRUPAL banner will be in full effect!

I pulled some strings

dudenhofer's picture

I may have told some of you how disappointed I was that I wasn't going to be able to make it... psych! I'm totally gonna be there. It'll be great to see the CINDUG friends again! It'll be good to see Brandonian again too, and for the record... +1 on the Services module walk-through!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make an after party... I will be promptly hitting the road near closing time. So for those staying afterwards - tip one back for me! Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Bring your cameras!

dougvann's picture

It would be awesome to get some press out of this event!
Lets get as many digital stills as we can, and also grab some video here and there.
As we tweet, post to flickr, youtube, ustream, etc we can use the hashtag #indydrupalhackfest so that searching is easier.
It would be equally awesome if many of us would blog about this on our personal blogs. I believe that these HackFests are going to grow into something bigger; likely an Indy DrupalCamp maybe even next year!
See you there!
