This is just a reminder that the Santa Cruz Drupal Users Group will meet tomorrow night, June 1st, at 7pm at Nextspace in downtown Santa Cruz.

Meeting Details

This month's meeting will feature:

  • A brief (huh) intro to CCK and Views, two of Drupal's powerhouse, go-to, don't-start-a-site-without-them modules.
  • A presentation by Kristen Pol on configuration and module use for search engine optimization (SEO) in Drupal.

Hope to see you there!

Extra Links Below Google Search Results

I promised I'd look into the extra links that show up below some search results. For example, if you google:

drupal tutorial

The first result from siteground.com has extra links.

Here's the info from google: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=47334

Google determines the links themselves based on information that they are not providing. They say:

"If the structure of your site doesn't allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don't think that the sitelinks for your site are relevant for the user's query, we won't show them."

but don't provide an example of how to structure our site so google will deem our links worthy.

I imagine that analyzing several sites that have these links show up might provide enough information to see what might work. If I have time this week, I'll try to do that.

If you are interested in my SEO Friend module, until drupal.org accepts it, you can download it here: http://kristen.org/content/seo-friend-module

Cheers!

Answer to June 1 question is a sitemap.gz file

It turns out that Google does have an answer to that questions, in their Webmaster Tools pages.

It turns out that you need a specially formatted XML file that lists the links. Add the file, and Google will use it. They recommend this for dynamically generated sites, which certainly covers Drupal.
