Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome to join the group and then edit it. Be bold!

This group discusses the subject matter of book, points out the errors in the book and discusses the differences between Drupal 6 and Drupal 7. We meet every Monday evening except for holidays at Droplabs in Downtown Los Angeles. This wiki is where you will find notes from our meetup and record from our discussions.

No meeting tomorrow.

Killing Drives

pcher1bw's picture

Hi Tony,

I was driving to Droplabs 3 days a week. Round trip was about an hour and 45 minutes each time. The drive was killing me, and I wasn't getting enough work done.

Having this event at Droplabs

christefano's picture

Having this event at Droplabs has been a great resource for our community. Thanks, Paul! I'm sorry to see it move to the Westside, but at the same time I'm truly glad you're looking out for yourself and reducing your commute.

Study group

Tony-Mac's picture

I for one will miss this group. I would like to suggest its continuance in 1 form or another and would be willing to brainstorm about ways to re-form its existence and reconstitute its content and methodology.
Thanks
Tony

PS Thanks Paul for your efforts.

Alternate locations

pcher1bw's picture

Guys,

I asked Coloft about it and they want $80 per meeting. I checked with the West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce today if I could use their office and was told that I need to check with the president of the Chamber, I will see him Monday night and ask then.

I don't really want this to die.

No die

Tony-Mac's picture

If it doesn't work out on the west side may I propose the MetrO? (and a mediator?).
Hope to see you soon. I work in the Larchmont area. We have a nice conference room. Have no idea if the boss would ok but what do you think of the idea?

Two locations?

kappaluppa's picture

Hi all,

I recently moved out here from Colorado and am interested in joining a study group. I heard about your group from Peter Benjamin (I believe this is the same group). He "attended" a few of my online group meetings, Drupalistas Online Study Group. (Our group fizzled out earlier this year. Our focus was learning how to build custom modules.) I'd be interested in attending/organizing/helping out so that the group can continue. How about a couple of in-tandem groups, eastside, westside? Perhaps run groups on two different days for those folks who may want to switch up.

I don't know how much interest there is, who attends, where we would have it, etc. Did Droplabs work out well for the group? Is it still an option? Is there another place more central to a majority of the group? (I'm in Whittier and the drive to Droplabs is not a bad one for me.) Paul, do you have any general info about how the group is distributed?

I have not been following the book and would have to catch up, but that's OK. Let me know your thoughts...

How can I be in 2 places at once?

pcher1bw's picture

Hi K,

Peter did inform us of your group last year. He told us you gave up on the book pretty early on.

We were averaging about 6 people per meeting. Four of the 6 including myself were coming from the West Side. The drive to Droplabs was definitely getting to me, and I want to relocate the group to the West Side for myself, but also there was a lot of interest from the West Side that wasn't coming to the meetings.

I have recently had to adjust my schedule due to time conflicts so I won't be able to lead a second group, and Monday is no longer a good day for me.

Droplabs is a good location for those centrally located or further east. If you want to start a centrally located study group talk to Droplabs, their weekly governance meeting is Wednesday night at Droplabs.

You might want to talk to Tony and Ron (rgon above) about restarting the group at Droplabs. Ron is one of the Droplabs founders and was a regular attendee at the study group. Tony was also a regular attendee at the study group (at least in the second spin which started in March).

Thanks for the info...

kappaluppa's picture

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the info. I'll start poking around and seeing if there is any interest.

As for our group, we did not use the book you guys were using - we weren't using any book really. Our goal was to learn how to create custom modules. So we devised a project and then we worked on figuring out how to do it. For instance, the first one was a basic contact form. Each week we'd review the progress on the form and add another component to the form itself and also the module building process so that we learned new bits about creating a module. We used Pro Drupal Development as a reference and also videos from BuildAModule.com. Our entire group and meeting was held online via Skype & join.me.

Perhaps there needs to be a third spin. Thanks again for your help...

learning by doing

Tony-Mac's picture

I think that would be a great way to learn. Learning by doing. We did toy with the idea of building something but never really got it going. I would like to try your approach. Droplabs would be a good venue I think. I would suggest meeting there on Monday for the first meeting. But I don't know the technicalities of reserving the room etc. Christefano?

Absolutely. Droplabs is available for this

christefano's picture

Absolutely. Droplabs is available for this type of event (it was actually designed for it, see http://groups.drupal.org/node/100049). We have a site license to Build a Module.com if or when a consult is needed.

Would you be interested in attending an upcoming Droplabs planning meeting? These are each Wednesday at 7pm and the next one is tonight. There are two considerations to discuss here that would come up during the in-person meeting, as well:

  • We need to have a Droplabs representative or keyholder at the space, but I don't think this would a problem since a hands-on development group like this will likely be of interest to at least one person at Droplabs.
  • Collaboration is a core value of our community and I want to remain open to the idea of having a video conferencing solution to bridge meeting spaces at Droplabs with a space on the Westside.

Thoughts?

I can come. What time should I be there? Is between7 and 7:30 ok? Kathy can you also come?

It looks like due to Kathy's

christefano's picture

It looks like due to Kathy's availability, we're putting this on the agenda and will discuss it around 7:3pm. Of course, you and anyone reading this is welcome to come for the start of the meeting at 7pm. These meetings are always open to the community.

I"ll be there...

kappaluppa's picture

I'll be there tonight. I can make it there at about 7:30. I have a previous engagement, but can stay for about an hour or so.

See you all then!

Great, let's put this on the

christefano's picture

Great, let's put this on the schedule for 7:30pm. The planning meeting starts at 7pm so we'll start at the usual time and get some of our other business done in advance.

Meeting tomorrow?

Tony-Mac's picture

Is there a study group meeting tomorrow Thursday the 20th? Sorry if this is a duh question.

There is not a Pro Drupal 7

christefano's picture

There is not a Pro Drupal 7 Development study group planned tomorrow at Droplabs. There are plans, however, for a different study group at Droplabs on 1st and 3rd Thursdays (see the above comments at http://groups.drupal.org/node/235103#comment-817198) but as far as I know it hasn't been officially announced yet.

Kathy, CP, Tony: Is this still on? You're welcome to discuss this further at Droplabs' planning meeting tonight at 7pm and / or go ahead and schedule the study group as discussed last week. If you'd like, you can use the attachments at http://groups.drupal.org/node/254658#attachments as a template for this.

No meeting on 9/20

kappaluppa's picture

As per the email I sent out and to clarify the new group and direction.
Thanks for checking in Tony. I think we should set up a new Wiki or message for it.

Thanks,
K

Ron, Stew and I are beginning

christefano's picture

Ron, Stew and I are beginning a 10-week module development boot camp and I thought everyone here in this thread might be interested:

   Drupal Module Development Boot Camp
   http://www.droplabs.net/modbootcamp

We'll be using Drupal 7 Module Development as general courseware, and will be augmenting it with materials from Build a Module.com and curriculum from supporting training companies.

Unlike ad-hoc study groups, this boot camp is heavy on planning and is twice a month (2nd and 4th Mondays) instead of every week. Lab hours are optional (but strongly encouraged) and can take place online or at Droplabs on Saturdays. Space is limited, so this boot camp is application-based.
