Advanced Themers Play Date at the August NYC Hack-a-thon

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
johnvsc's picture

To extend the fun to all us "front -end" developers / designers who haven't had the chance to play around with the new frameworks that have been created, I thought that the August 16,2009 hack-a-thon would be a great opportunity to get together and, well, play around.

So, sign up at http://groups.drupal.org/node/24568, bring your lappy and a fresh install.

I, in particular, would love to play around more with

to see how they work together or don't!

Also, I have a couple of modules that need some love... so maybe i will work on them too.

but probably not, lol!

Whoa....Sounds Awesome

..and what about fusion ?

drupaltronic's picture

I've been playing around with fusion, and this approach how to handle the grid system and skinr tops all other frameworks.
This is the real future of drupal theming.

cool

johnvsc's picture

.... i haven't played with it... so let's put that on the list too!

Fusion?

lipcpro's picture

Is there a link for fusion, or a place to download that from? If I go to drupal.org/project/fusion I get access denied. Plus other than what's listed, are there any modules, other themes one should have downloaded before Sunday? Like the devel module.

DOH!

johnvsc's picture

sorry about that

I forgot that Johan VanGriek emailed me a copy of the theme... i assumed that he released it. so I have it and will bring it for us to play with :)

i didn't realize i was gettin it on the skinny :)

johnvsc's picture

I thought it might be a good idea to zip up the above modules/ themes and add them here so everyone could download them in one shot...

that, plus one or two toys :)

How did it go today people, thinking about holding something similar over here in Malmö (Sweden).

Did you have a plan/format for the day or did you just wing it?

It is good to have a plan of

It is good to have a plan of what you wish to work on ahead of time, otherwise you'll waste precious time doing that instead of doing work. Once you have that, just wing it :)

Very very well

i got so much out of it...

thanks jacine for talking about skinr (...again!!!) as it is good to see it in action.

So, what we did was really loose and explora-tive (i am an artist so i get to make up words and type things incorrectly (you should see my new BSAH commands that compleye rck)). we did have a kind a plan which was:

  1. talk about the pros and cons of the new frameworks that are listed above.
  2. find out how they play together
  3. figure out for ourselves which way we want to work

and yes, jacine, i did use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/128 to build that ol above ;)

We had a discussion about "The best theme that we should standarize and while we are at it let's throw Zen out the window" ... which was tough to listen to as my gut reaction is to kick in the teeth anyone that tries to tell me what to do (i thought i was restraint) even though i agreed 100% with what was being discussed (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dada for an explanation on why this happens). really, I don't want to throw "Zen out the window" ... i love Zen, but as i develop into a better themer (did you notice the pun?) I am looking for something else that suits my needs. But why then; do i go back to zen (I feel a haiku coming on ... or maybe it is just tooooo muuuuuuch coffee?)

Notes to remember:

  1. SKINR IS NOT TIED TO ANY THEME $expletive!!! It is a stand alone module, not a theme!
  2. Zen 960 + Firebug is a very cool way to learn about grid systems
  3. You can use the pre-processing functions / methods from any theme for any theme if you configure it the right way
  4. Canvas simply uses pre-process functions to the max and "splits" up a template.php into individual files: why? good question! So that the page that is loading is only using the stuff that it needs to... and not EVERY FUNCTION IN THE THEME!
  5. Do we really wanna encourage people using Skinr to set up grid layouts?
  6. The best way to learn about what a theme does is to install it and play around with it... and having the ear of the person who created it :)~
  7. The hard part about contributing modules/themes to the community is maintaining and supporting it!

(man, i just love that plugin !)

now, after this post... aren't you glad you don't hear what goes on in my head ALL THE TIME?

Brilliant!

Should do this once a month. Great discussion and exploration of new solutions. Now that a strategy for Skinr is in place having another one of these in September could breathe life into it. Thanks to all who organized, attended and contributed.

@Jacine - wildfeed mentions

@Jacine - wildfeed mentions a strategy for Skinr, can you fill me in on that or does this refer to http://jacine.net/demo/skinr-ui.html.

We are using this module more and more in testing and would very much like to be in the loop of its development as it is core to the development of our commercial themes.

Is there a roadmap or can be we just jump into the queue with patches etc?

Hey, well the link you

jacine's picture

Hey, well the link you posted is pretty much our roadmap for the next release and it's almost done. The code (unfinished and not committed) was posted above.

The "strategy" stuff we talked about was more on how to get the community involved and how to package up and share skins. johnvsc provided some of the highlights above, but the rest still needs to be written up probably discussed a little more and then we could really use some help with various tasks.

I created a new group for Skinr (currently pending approval) so we have a place to discuss this stuff: http://groups.drupal.org/skinr

I thought it was great!

I really enjoyed the demos and discussions. Its really great to have a wide variety of talent in the room all with different experiences and goals. I learned more in a few hours then I ever could on my own. I want to do it again soon!

*cries*

I missed this! I'm so sad. I hope there are future themer play dates. :)
