Whats an LA Drupal meetup like? Fun & Interesting!

LA Drupal meetups are free and open to anyone interested in Drupal from beginner to guru, but you have to bring a fun attitude and be willing to share or learn.

We have areas for networking, general topics, and more advanced learning and sharing. Presentations and a big breakout session at the end to chat and network.

We like to highlight and encourage folks with cool local projects to present at upcoming meetings. In the past year we've had presenters from Warner Brothers Records; hosting over a hundred artist sites on Drupal, StandUp2Cancer.org - over a million hits in one day during the airing of the show, and local shops such as www.ThisByThem.com, www.openChimp.com, www.chillco.com, www.exaltations.net, www.IJHANA.com, www.WorkHabit.com, www.AchieveInternet.com, and others. Topics have included How to build your first Drupal Module, Using Views 1 & Views 2, Panels module, Drush module, Theming, and Scaling Drupal & Cloud computing among others.

Have a topic you'd like to see? Add it here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/9220

Agenda
Free Beer & Pizza provided by our host: www.causecast.org

Book Raffle - come win a Drupal related book!

Topics for the night:

  • Group discussion of mobile site development in Drupal. Tom Boone will speak briefly about his own recent experience creating a mobile version of a site and find out what others in the group have done so far in this area, to cover what tools/modules are available, what approaches work best in specific situations, what problems remain to be solved.

  • Drush 2.0 for Beginners - Tired of using FTP to update Drupal core and all the modules you use? Time to learn Drush. Chris Charlton will be giving a gentle intro to the community winning software known as Drush (Drupal-shell). Drush literally will save you hours every week managing all your Drupal sites. Drush is not a module, but instead a command-line "Terminal" application, where in one single command can update your Drupal core and ALL modules in under 1 minute! Chris will cover the basics of getting Drush running on a Mac/Unix/Linux environment. You can install Drush locally (great idea!) or on a web server (another great idea!).

  • Drupal Camp LA 2009 community recamp - we'll have a chunk of time where camp attendees can voice their favorite moments of the camp. Did you attend? Did you just love a certain session or two? If so, come voice the goods from the largest West coast Drupal event.

Main Presentation Area
Main presentation area holds up to 80 people and is geared towards general interest topics, especially geared towards people who are new to Drupal or the Topic(s) being presented. It is also a forum for sharing, asking questions.

Lightning Talks - come prepared to talk for 5 min. about something you'd like to share with the Drupal group. Finished a new Drupal site? Find a cool new module? Keep it succinct - you get stopped at five minutes - but we'll be nice about it.

Q & A followed by Job Announcements.

And...
In addition to our presentation(s) of the night we have open-mic opportunities for those who have general Drupal questions or need help during our wonderful meeting segment, "Ask the LA Drupal Community." Need to just ask another human a Drupal question? Then this is that chance.

We have raffle prizes for attendees, and as always, the end of the meeting is our networking session with the fun and knowledgeable LA Drupal crowd.

Those wishing to make announcements for Drupal jobs/work, please come early and speak with the meetup organizers before the meetup and we can provide time for you to speak to the audience.

Tags for the night:
Post photos on Flickr.com with the tag "ladrupal" and "drupal".

Mobile site development

tomboone's picture

I'd like to start a group discussion of mobile site development in Drupal. I don't have much to present on the topic at this point, but could use maybe 10-15 minutes to speak briefly about my own recent experience creating a mobile version of a site and find out what others in the group have done so far in this area. Ultimately, this would lead to a more in-depth presentation down the road on the current state of mobile development with Drupal: what tools/modules are available, what approaches work best in specific situations, what problems remain to be solved, etc.

I'm by no means an expert on the topic, but I think it's a timely topic that would benefit from some discussion by the group.

I'm game. Definitely an

I'm game. Definitely an overdue topic. the main principles in my mind is that sites should be made accessible and device independent. (Probably my main dislike with fixed width layout/designs; they assume a certain type of browser and viewport size). device independence was one of the original strengths of the web.

Recently I was looking into mobile stylesheets and read an article on ALA: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/return-of-the-mobile-stylesheet

My main takeway from that article was an antiscreen technique to help ensure mobile vs. traditional browsers recognize the "best" layout. As Mr. Hazaël-Massieux states, the idea is similar to Eric Meyer's reset.css technique (to reduce browser inconsistencies). I think the article offers some very useful solutions and I am in the beginning stages of introducing some of these techniques to my themes.

Overall I liked the article a lot. However Mr. Hazaël-Massieux suggests that sites should be designed specifically for mobile users. Perhaps I just misunderstand him, but for the vast majority of sites that seems impractical and costly (vs ROI). I think a hybrid solution makes more sense - in that certain parts of the site should be designed with mobile users in mind. To me, pages that contain information related to travel or contact are obviously useful for mobile visitors. But it quickly becomes more complex and probably site-statistics would be more valuable in measuring benefit vs implementation costs of designing specifically for mobile browsers.

New map for Driving, Parking and Lobby Directions

Peter-gdo's picture

With a few enhancements, adding nearby parking lot locations,
where you may park, at your own risk, of towing, so do buy
something from them, eat a meal after the meeting, as Norm's
and Denny's are 24 hour restaurants.

http://pete.peterbenjamin.com/drupal/LA.Drupal.parking.jpg

There has been talk about the difficulty of finding parking, of
finding the front lobby, both are concerns of both men and
women, so I have done my usual in producing this map, and
the below directions.

See you at this Tuesday's meeting, August 25th.

LA Drupal User Group

Driving - Parking - Lobby Directions

LA Drupal User Group is hosted at http://www.Causecast.com's new facility

969 Colorado Blvd.
Santa Monica, CA 90401

The building is just one tenth mile north of the 10 Freeway.

The closest 10 Freeway Off Ramp is Lincoln Blvd in either direction.
The building is a single story, but tall, white building, 1 mile from the ocean.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS - Freeway Access

Going West on the 10 Freeway

Exit Lincoln, going up a short hill at reduced speed, and at the top
of the hill, be VERY careful to "merge" to the right most lane
watching for fast moving cars coming from behind on the right.
Turn right from the most right hand lane onto Lincoln going north.

Make the next right hand turn onto Colorada Blvd. Go 1/10 mile.
The building is on your left, next to 10th Street.

Going East on the 10 Freeway

Exit Olympic to Lincoln, going up a long hill. Turn left onto
Lincoln Blvd. Go north across the 10 Freeway, moving to the
right lane as you can. Do not turn onto the Freeway Off Ramp.
Turn right at the next street, Colorado Blvd. Go 1/10 mile.
The building is on your left, next to 10th Street.

PARKING

Parking is a Santa Monica close to your desired spot is tough.
You may have to park up to half a mile away. See the map URL below.

Metered Street Parking and Free Street Parking is in the immediate area.
Read the signs and do not park in "Permit Required" residential start parking.

They do ticket frequently (every 30 minutes, less often after 6 pm,
but not on weekends due to beach visitors).

The closest Public Parking Garage is beneath the Santa Monica Main Library
on 7th Street, north of Colorado, just north of Santa Monica Blvd, half a mile away.
It has 525 spaces. It is $1 per hour. http://parking.smgov.net/det_downtown.html

Von's Supermarket has a large lot, but only 1 hour parking before they tow.
It's at the corner of Lincoln and Broadway, just 1 block north of Colorado.

There are some hidden parking lots that would be acceptable to park in,
but we do not document them here, as they are private "business" lots,
unlocked at all times, but you would qualify for towing according to the
signs. I'm a registered Grainger.com customer, so I feel safe from towing.

Parking Map (Third Draft):

LOBBY Directions

The Lobby entrance is on Colorado Blvd near the middle of the building,
and has an indented entranced, with a separate security gate from the door.
It's not the corner, which is an architectural firm with an all glass door.

Upon entering CauseCast's front door, proceed to the left, 10 feet, to
the lobby open space, which looks like office space for programmers.
Make a right turn into the main area, and walk half the building
length to the seating area. You may wait in the lobby area.
Take a seat if you are early.

Volunteer by helping set up the chairs, tables, ice the refreshments in the sink,
or see one of the working volunteers to ask for the Volunteer Coordinator
to find out what is available to be set up, or tear down at the end. Thx.

While you may use the rear parking lot walk in entrance and go to

the far entrance door, closest to the alley, 1158 Colorado, Unit D, and
enter the building via the the kitchen area where free pizza and drink is
avialable, let it be known, the parking spaces are for employees, and
the walk in entrance gate locks automatically at 7 PM.
Walk around to the front of the building on Colorado Street.

Regional projects and workshops?

gusaus's picture

Now that creating useful installation profiles is (almost) a reality, there are all sorts of ways we can learn and collaborate by working on actual projects. Turning the amazing DrupalCampLA site into a profile could be a great way to set the table for an ongoing series of specialized projects and workshops.

Curious to know who would be interested in this and/or similar projects on an ongoing basis and at what capacity (mentor, apprentice, themer, project manager, developer, designer, programmer, etc.).

Biking to this Meetup

braydon's picture

For any more east LA people wanting to go to this via bike:

Meet at 6:00pm at Wilshire / Western Metro Station ( the same place the Los Angeles Critical Mass meets ).

We ride out at 6:20pm

I've posted this a few other places, midnightridazz.com, lafixed.com, and sent out a few emails.

Hope to see you there!

I'm still trying to make my first Meetup.

twall411's picture

Thursday nights are generally bad for me and it is a long way to Santa Monica. I did attend Drupalcamp on Saturday and think that I could really benefit from the meetups. I am hoping that Sept. will give me my first chance to attend. In the mean time I am wondering if there are enough people in the San Gabriel Valley for an informal get together. I would really like to network with people in the area. I am involved in an interesting project involving gmap and location modules and would really like to bounce some ideas around. If someone has some experience with gmaps and location it would make for a good presentation at a forthcoming meetup. If not, perhaps by the October meetup I will have some good experience to share.

We meet Tuesday's (not Thursdays)

mike stewart's picture

We'd love to have you join us. This is one of the largest regular Drupal meetups in the country and we try to have topics useful to all skill levels - plus the networking can't be beat!

As far as SGV - I'd suggest posting an "Drupal Cafe" event in Southern California Group (which is divided more like craigslist - by area code / geography). Pick a day, a location, and make it happen. You'll might be pleasantly surprised...

Probably won't make it for the mobile discussion

tomboone's picture

I had a tire blowout on the way to work that I'm going to have to deal with this evening, so I doubt I'm going to make it to the meeting tonight. Apologies to all, but either we'll need to postpone the mobile discussion until next month, or if someone else wants to get the ball rolling tonight, go ahead.

Can't make it :(

I can't make it out tonite due to work :( have fun, everybody!

Artisteer

snorkers's picture

I was quite impressed by the Artisteer demo last night... looks like a Mac version is on the way too http://www.artisteer.com/?p=news (currently in beta).

Artisteer, is a great

SoCalCreations's picture

Artisteer, is a great program, one in which I have looked at quite extensively for the past few weeks. It's major drawback is that it only does static widths and not liquid. However if you have ever designed for Drupal, I am sure that isn't a problem as you can rapid prototype with Artisteer, then modify the code and CSS files later to add liquid sizing. I haven't been with Drupal long enough to learn how to theme it yet, but would gladly love to hear from those that are good at making a static width to a liquid state as I could use your talent.

graphically oriented modules

It would be great to something like Artisteer in the browser. Do you know any good modules that are graphically oriented?
