This wiki document provides a how-to and checklist for recording, sharing and uploading videos of presentations and meetups for the video channel at https://vimeo.com/GLADrupal published for and by the Greater Los Angeles Drupal user group (formerly Downtown Los Angeles Drupal).
Although this wiki document details how things are being done now (i.e. at the time of this writing), the comments below are an excellent place to discuss and suggest how to improve this process, reduce its costs, generalize it for other user groups and make it more effective and / or collaborative.
Table of Contents
Recording
Any screen recording software that can save to MP4 format will work.
WebEx
Many videos at Greater Los Angeles Drupal meetups and conferences are recorded via WebEx, which is currently being sponsored by Exaltation of Larks.
WebEx videos are saved as proprietary, multi-track ARF (Network Based Recording) files, which can be converted to MP4 files with the WebEx Network Recording Player.
Using WebEx Network Recording Player requires authenticating with a WebEx account. See https://communities.cisco.com/message/85370#85370 for a work-around.
For several years, videos were recorded and uploaded with Camtasia Relay sponsored by John Romine at University of California, Irvine. In 2012, an incompatibility between Camtasia Relay and Mac OS X Mountain Lion necessitated that Greater Los Angeles Drupal find a different video recording solution.
Sharing
Anyone who has MP4 video files can share videos with the Dropbox account used by Greater Los Angeles Drupal's video team. If you have a Dropbox account already, share your video folder with dropbox [at] drupal [dot] la
If you don't have a Dropbox account, use our referral link at http://ex.tl/ZpL to sign up! If you don't want to use Dropbox, you can give a thumbdrive or download URL to one of the members of the Greater Los Angeles Drupal video team.
Uploading
When video files are shared with the Greater Los Angeles Drupal video team, a member of the team will follow the following steps:
- If shared via Dropbox, a member of the video team will copy the video files to the /Apps/Vimeo folder, where they will be transferred to Dropbox and be detected by Vimeo's magic connector thingie
- Videos are then uploaded to Vimeo:
- Log in to Vimeo with the Greater Los Angeles Drupal account (see Accounts, Usernames and Passwords below)
- Click "Upload" or go to https://vimeo.com/upload
- Click "Choose a Video to Upload" and select the video to upload
- If uploading via Dropbox, click "choose from Dropbox" instead and select the video to upload
- Once the video is uploaded and transcoded, go to the video page and edit it to add a title, description and any related tags
- Go to the event announcement here on Drupal Groups that's most related to the video recording and either update the teaser with a link to the video or post a comment with a link to the video (or both)
- Can't find the event announcement? Go to https://groups.drupal.org/node/219129/og-panel/3 to search
- Get the embed code by clicking the Share widget within the Vimeo player and post it to http://drupal.la or your own blog!
Joining the Video Team
Copying and uploading video files isn't glamorous work, but it provides long-lasting value for all of our events and helps grow our group and the larger Drupal community.
If you'd like to join the team, contact any of the Greater Los Angeles Drupal organizers, or send an email to any of the email addresses listed in this wiki document. Thank you!
Accounts, Usernames and Passwords
Dropbox
The Dropbox account contains video files, server backups, etc. and uses the address dropbox [at] drupal [dot] la
Several Greater Los Angeles Drupal organizers have access to this account and can be reached at the above address.
Vimeo
For the time being, the Vimeo account is a Vimeo Plus account and uses the address vimeo [at] drupal [dot] la. This account is currently being sponsored by Exaltation of Larks. Several Greater Los Angeles Drupal organizers have access to this account and can be reached at the above address.
Comments
This should be
This should be "sticky'ed."
Additionally, we should have a document/wiki (I guess it could go in this one) that transcends all the meetups we organize on "Presentation Best Practices." Simple stuff like repeating questions from the audience would be a big help cuz it's incredibly frustrating to be on the livestream or watching the video after only to have zero clue what the presenter is responding to. I think I mentioned this during our Drupal Design Camp LA 2012 redux.
What other things would people like to see in this document? What makes it easier for you to engage? What would you like to see avoided?
