Topics/Presentations

We'd like to see everyone come prepared to either pose a question/issue they've ran across in the past month or to share something cool/amazing they've discovered in the past month. There are plenty of questions out there, so let's make sure we know what they are so we can get them all answered at this month's meetup!!

Additionally, please use the comments on this event node to suggest topics. If there is a consensus, we will try to have someone prepared to do an informal presentation.

Virtual Meetup!

We will not be broadcasting this week and should discuss our options going forward.

After each meetup, we depart from the "structured" environment, and continue our discussions over beers and/or food.

I have a conflict this

Bob Newby's picture

I have a conflict this Thursday. Hopefully I'll make the January gathering.

I visited the new ABI today!

miche's picture

I visited the new ABI today! It is a very cool space on Elm Street (old McQuades/Chair Gallery/Lili Rugs and Fine Furnishings). The sign on the door has not been updated yet - keep that in mind as you try to find it! Because it is downtown, we have to use metered parking. It is $.75/hr. Thankfully, the machines take coins AND credit cards. I recommend the parking lot west of Elm that I mentioned above.

Where is meeting room?

ripinnh's picture

If you look at the street view on Google Maps, are we going in through the door that says Chair Gallery.com? Where do we go once we get inside? Which floor?

Yes!

miche's picture

If you look at Google Street View on the link above, you go through the ChairGallery.com door (which no longer says that). That whole space on the first floor is the new ABI. Since the space is still new, the windows have the previous tenant's name on them (Lili Rugs and Fine Furnishings). The doors are locked, so one of us will be there to let people in. The conference room is inside on the right.

Haven't even discussed topics

Haven't even discussed topics this time..

Topic

ripinnh's picture

If nobody else has suggestions, I have lots of questions/topics that I'd like to hear discussed.

  • How do you name fields so that you can find them in the content list? for instance, I have a content type meeting with Meeting Time Meeting Location and Meeting Address, and a content type event with Event Time, Event Location, Event Address. I did this so that it would be easy to find when looking for fields while setting up views, but I'm guessing it's not the best way to handle it. Somebody told me they used taxonomy, but we didn't have time to get into it. Which leads to my next suggestion...
  • Let's talk about taxonomy... When and how you use it, what method do you use to come up with it?
  • What modules do you use for
    • menus - responsive (I've been using superfish because it comes with AT themes)
    • menus - non-resonsive (I've been using nice menus and special_menu_items - but special menu items don't work on mobile so I'm thinking it's not such a good idea)
    • slideshows - responsive ()
    • slideshows - non-responsive ()
    • SEO
      • Do you use an SEO specific module - Drupal SEO Essentials, SEO Checklist, Debut SEO
      • Which modules do you use? Page Title? Meta Tags? Path Auto? Global Redirect (is it me or can this be a real pain)? Pathalogic?
      • How do you decide how you will set up url paths for content?
  • What do you do about client domain names and hosting?
  • Pantheon - don't we have the same problem here as using simple scripts in bluehost in that we're stuck with whatever updates they have in place?

And if there's nothing interesting there, I've been working on my personal website and wouldn't mind getting feedback on it and a couple of the sites that I've been working on.

SEO modules

damienmckenna's picture
  • Start with Metatag :)
  • There's no need for the Page Title module, Metatag covers that.
  • The Redirect module is taking over from GlobalRedirect.
  • Also use XMLSitemap to help inform search engines of when your content is updated.
  • Pathauto is essential.

Sure! I got examples of

perignon's picture

Sure! I got examples of nearly every one of those.

Field names can quickly turn into field pea soup! And I've unfortunately learned there are instances where fields cannot be re-used between content types.

I'm using taxonomy for two things on my site. Taxonomy can really be helpful but you must be careful of helper modules on Taxonomy and in the way they are coded. Modules that use the "TID" instead of the Taxonomy name can cause problems depending on your setup (going from Dev->Prod).

Domain names, I use Namecheap. I have about 80'ish domain names I own. I once used godaddy till they decided to support censorship. Thus far, I have been very happy with Namecheap.com

Hosting, I do all my own hosting so I can speak to hosting services.

Yeah!

ripinnh's picture

@Damien and @Brady That's exactly what I had in mind. I know that this type of exchange of information is priceless to those of us who are new to Drupal. Hopefully, those who have been around a while can get something out of it too.

Taxonomy

mkmagu's picture

I definitely would like to talk about Taxonomy & views, I hit a brick wall with it on a project.

As for the client hosting and domain names. They should be purchasing it so they have direct access and control over it. I usually give recommendations on where to go, for domains I use tosdomains.net which is ENOM, INC. I will not use a reseller of domains ever again. For Drupal hosting for small & medium sites I reccomend A2hosting.com. I have 1 customer on bluehost.com but won't use them again.

If you start doing a lot of

perignon's picture

If you start doing a lot of sites for people. I actually recommend registering and maintaining the domain name for them. You make it clear their name is owned by them, but allowing them to register the domain name can cause you some difficulties. I always had problems with people not renewing their domain name and their site go down - then they come to me. Whereas I keep tabs on domain names cause I manage so many of them.

Doors are locked! Can

miche's picture

Doors are locked! Can everyone be on time? Make sure you have signed up so we know to look for you. If you know you are going to be late, can you let me or Jake know (or post here) so we can keep an eye out for you? In the future, I think they are going to put a doorbell in.

I'll probably be early as

perignon's picture

I'll probably be early as usual cause I try to avoid traffic on rt3.

Not sure I'll make it on time

BruceDawson's picture

We're having issues with a new refrigeration unit, so I'm not sure I'll be able to make it on time (or at all).

Have fun; do good things!

Taxonomy - plus Views, Apache Solr, and SEO

Bob Newby's picture

I assume you had a meeting last night. How did it go?

Weather permitting me to travel from Portsmouth, I will be happy to lead a short seminar on Taxonomy for January's meeting.

We can cover and discuss concrete use cases for employing it in conjunction with Views (for search) and with Apache Solr Search. And we can talk about its value for SEO.

Let me know.

Bob

Thanks Bob! When we post the
