Final list will be given to the venue at 10pm on January 1st (the evening before the meetup)

Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • Introducing Drupal Ladders - Fureigh (?)
    • Custom node edit forms using Panels/page manager - WillyK
    • Sign up in comments to give lightning talk
    • Sign up in comments to give lightning talk
  • 20 Min Talks
Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to.

    • Devops without the Devs or the Ops - Dave Hall
    • Short Stack - Steven Merrill
    • Bite-sized contribution - Ezra G
  • Break Out Sessions
Breakout sessions take place in the "other room" and are more informal, covering any number of topics.

    • New 2 Drupal BOF table - New to Drupal? Bring your questions and problems for expert help
    • Drupalcamp NYC 12 planning discussion - informal, ad hoc discussion to plan next Drupalcamp
  • We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.

Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide.

Signup link giving me "page not found"

Toolmakers's picture

Hi Forest, Hate to be the dumb newbie, but I am not finding the right place to plug in my name for the security list for Jan2 Meetup.

Link in signup box on the Drupal Groups site is taking me to: http://groups.drupal.org/node/drupal.org/user/1287152/edit/Personal%20in...

which says "page not found"
I will go check profile settings next-

I did state on the Meetup.com page RSVP response that I had signed up on the Drupal groups site, but actually, I think that failed - so not true....

Hi, why are signups closed?

Hi, why are signups closed?

Signups are open. As for

Signups are open.

As for "why" this is a quirk in the signup module— might be something to cover as a lightning topic.

The start and end time seem incorrect for this event

The start and end time seem incorrect for this event.
Start: 2012-01-02 18:30 - 2012-12-02 21:00

It is dated for a year ago Jan 2nd

Is that causing the "Signups closed for this Event" problem?

Aha! Might be. Don't control

Upgrading from 6 to 7

RKopacz's picture

I don't know about the others, but I would like to have a discussion about best practices and alternative methods for upgrading from 6 to 7. I have many clients who feel apprehensive about the cost of doing this, particularly those who have complex sites and limited budgets. I have seen others describe an alternate method of upgrading using feeds and or the migrate module, so I am curious as to what else people are doing.

I can't call myself an expert, as I have only done one of these upgrades to a small site. Can't say it was the best experience.

Help on signup

moranimation's picture

These things might be of help...
The signup box is available in the "View" tab.
The box should be appearing below the "Signup Instructions:" in a box above the "Unsubscribe" message.
It is close to the bottom of the meeting memo, before comments.....
Once you have signed up, hit the "Signups" tab to find your entry.
You have time to signup up to 24 hours before the event.

thank you for your response.

ltaliano's picture

thank you for your response. i see all that but when i click on "provide your full name" in the "Sign up for Drupal NYC Meetup -- January 2nd 2013" box, it goes to

http://groups.drupal.org/node/drupal.org/user/2240468/edit/Personal%20in...

and i says page cannot be found.

Hi Italiano, It looks like

forestmars's picture

Hi Italiano,

It looks like you need to add your name to your main profile on drupal.org at http://drupal.org/user/2240468 under the edit tab. After you've done that it should be picked up by your groups account, and you should be able to signup.

I'm not sure why that specific link you are clicking on is broken for you, but we will look into this at the meeting.

If you have any further trouble, please contact me directly. I'll add you to the signup list, and we'll figure out what the issue was at the meeting.

I'm having trouble too

20 min talk: Bite-sized contribution

ezra-g's picture

If folks are interested, I could give an abbreviated version of "Bite-sized contribution," a presentation with the goal of encouraging new folks to become involved in the Drupal community, in ways other than coding.

The session description from BADCamp 2012:

This session encourages everyone to become involved -- or to get more actively involved -- in participating in the Drupal Community by discussing common objections that people who are new to Drupal often raise.

We'll examine these objections and then shatter them in a lighthearted invitation for everyone to participate.

Together, we'll overcome objections such as:

- "But I'm not a developer!"
- "But it's not polished enough!"
- "But I'm afraid to look new!"
- "But I dont have time to contribute!"

In the process, we'll learn about:
- Famous Drupalists' first posts on Drupal.org.
- The worst logo Drupal history
- How to foster a community that is welcoming to new participants
- [Your great "new to Drupal" story here]

Today's Meetup

Phil Hruska's picture

Hi - I just returned from the holidays and missed the 10pm cut off time last night. Is it possible to add my name to the signup list for tonight's meeting?

Short Stack

Steven Merrill's picture

I'll also be giving a pared-down version of my talk from BADCamp 2012, entitled Short Stack.

The description is as follows:

The average Drupal hosting stack is getting much more complex. The average high-performance Drupal stack might have Apache or nginx, PHP, HAProxy, Varnish, Memcache or Redis, SOLR and Tomcat, MySQL, and a CDN.

Each of these tools is great at a particular job, but the sheer number of daemons involved can have several adverse effects:

  • More configuration is needed to get developers a copy of the production stack for testing
  • Client system administrators may be less familiar with some of the new tools you wish to use to build out a site for them
  • More to install, more logs to check, more possible points in the stack to possibly have to debug when things go wrong

With that in mind, let's take a look at some alternative options around a leaner, meaner, open-source hosting stack. We’ll take a look at how much can be done with the following 4 tools:

  • PHP-PFM
  • nginx for reverse proxy caching, load balancing, and as a web server
  • PostgreSQL for SQL storage and search
  • Redis for caching and queueing

Regrets

Turns out I cannot make it and had to cancel my sign up. Everybody have fun and see you all next month.

Lighting Round on Customizing Node Edit Form

willyk's picture

Looks like we're still short a few talks. If people want I, can do a Lighting Round on how to easily customize the node edit form using Page Manager/Panels to create a better user experience for content editors and end users. I'll be arriving a bit late, so would have to be later in the order.

Aww man

Hi I also missed the cutoff time, can you add me to the list please

It's a quickstart guide with a sample workflow and a list of additional resources. Hopefully it'll help you get started!
