Drupal Meetup - Views Tips/Tricks
Hey gang,
Not sure what has happened to our local meetups; maybe slowed down over the summer, and maybe not this month due to Montreal DCamp... but..
I wouldn't mind presenting a session on Views for Drupal 6.
For those that don't know Views (aka Views 2) in Drupal 6 has been completely redone from Drupal 5 days.. and IT ROCKS!!! No, seriously, Views2 is by far the most powerful web creation tool on the planet. Even if you were pretty familiar with Drupal 5 Views; you'd really need to see Views2 to get an idea of just how powerful this is.
Over the past few months i have come up with or come across quite an assortment of advanced to expert level tricks/tips/techniques for doing some pretty slick things - figured, if any interest (and a room) i could share them with the Ottawa Drupal community.
A few ideas:
- basic (but complex) views to gather related content
- what is a views display
- using views instead of contemplate to theme nodes (but with related content!!)
- groups and views
- arg handler magic to get a view to "view" any complex set of nodes you like

I was just in Montreal over the week-end and definitely made me want to hang out more with Drupal folks!
Views2 is indeed an awesome module! Even if I've been playing with it I think I still have so much more to learn...
So, I guess where and when would be the next question...

i actually live/work in S. Ottawa, so works for me... but should shoot for at least 5 or so before it makes sense to do this.. and, might be spending winter in the UK.. so should shoot for doing this in the next couple weeks. :)

any day/time
Any day/time works for me except for likely not Tuesday evenings. So looks like like we might hit a quorum, so maybe should pick (or Kathc can) a date/time. Still open to other venues as well if South is too far for people.
Kathc, do you have a large screen i can use for my laptop? I am not sure i'll have time to do much for slides; but will have a few site examples i can walk through - both Views setup and additional required code.
I could easily do an hour.
Also, if others have Views tips to show - please feel free to jump in as well.

Also I wanted to note that at the end of DrupalCamp Montreal they announced that there would be a DrupalCamp in Ottawa in May. I guess this will need some discussion over the coming months.

Deanna and I were talking with Miriam and some of the other organizers on Saturday night, so it must be a go :) Especially now that we have a domain.
Okay, if we're not Tuesday or Wednesday, how about Thursday, either October 29 or November 5?
I have both a projector/screen and the monitors for the videoconferencing system (big LCDs), so I'm sure we can project whatever needs projecting.

I'd prefer a Monday to a Thursday; but i am good either way. So how about Monday, Nov 2 at 5:30PM at (location??). If we can settle on day/time and Kathc lets us know address, then i guess we should add an event and let people sign up so we get an idea of numbers.

Also, if views related things you would like to show; feel free to list them here. Also, if Views related questions you'd like to bring up; post those as well (can't promise i'll know the answers, but more chance if i know ahead of time - or someone else may know).

Will you be looking at Views from purely from a users/admin point of view or would you be will/able to talk from a developers point of view as well. I ask since I'm currently adding some Views2 capability to a module that I maintain and am beating my head against the wall trying to create plug-ins and get the themeing to work :-/
Either way, you can probably count me in as an attendee.

Will be looking at this from a developer's view point. Not sure a user/admin would ever be creating a View; they would likely only use the views that had been designed on the site.
Perhaps what you mean is the difference between a developer creating Views via the Views GUI or as a module designer; adding Views functionality such as views handlers specific to their custom module. Doubt we'll have much time to go in to views related module design; but feel free to grab me after session to pick my brain. As for templating; I do hope to touch on a few things related to this.
