Our meeting will be web-based using the dimdim sharing service. It will also have an audio dial in. Therefore you will need to be at your computer and dialed in to the conference call before 9:00 PM Eastern to participate. Please plan to join the audio call and dimdim meeting ten minutes early (8:50) to avoid delays.
- Conference Join Link, click this link, provide your name (don't change the "Meeting Room") and join.
- Dial In is 702-473-3463, with passcode of 378725
- I believe it is also possible to get audio through your computer. In this case please use a headset. I've heard there are audio issues otherwise. Hopefully the conference call will be better
- I will have a Windows machine running and on display, but will talk the MAMP folks through their install as well. A couple of MAC folks promised to join the meeting to walk the MAC folks through MAMP install. DimDim should allow this - we'll see.
- DOWNLOAD the appropriate WAMPServer (for windows machines) or MAMP (for Mac machines) installer BEFORE this meeting. MAMP in particular is a large download. Please download using these SPECIFIC instructions
- WAMPServer Download (Windows Users):
We are NOT using the latest version of WAMPServer as it uses a version of php incompatible with drupal.
Go here - http://sourceforge.net/projects/wampserver/files/WampServer%202/WampServ...
If prompted tell it to download.
Put the download somewhere convenient like your Desktop - MAMP (MAC Users)
Go here - http://www.mamp.info/en/downloads/index.html
Find and click the download link for "Download: Mamp & Mamp Pro..."
Have a really old MAC OS (10.3 or before)? Look on the bottom of that page for alternate downloads.
- WAMPServer Download (Windows Users):

- Install WAMP on your Windows PC

Goal:
- To ensure that you have a PC ready to go for the hands on intro session at Drupal Camp NYC 7 on December 5th
Venue:

environment comparison
I'm interested to see the difference/levels of ease between installing on both systems. Do you know what OS specifically you will be using on a PC? I've already got MAMP running on my MBP :)
Windows version won't matter too much
I'm actually a Linux guy myself. However, generally I find the intro session to be about a 50/50 split between Windows and MAC folks.
I'll try and work with both WAMP for Windows folks and MAMP for Mac folks on this web based meeting. Haven't decided if I'll be running XP or Windows 7 for the screen share (I don't have any vista machines). But it won't make much difference. We'll be using Wamp so end result should be the same.
I won't cover setting up LAMP on Linux. That's out of scope for this meeting, but happy to help anyone on the side with that.
Remember though - this is an intro session! I won't assume folks attending even know what LAMP is. So I'll both be discussing what LAMP is as well as (while) walking folks through how to get their environment set up locally on either MAC or Windows.
i concur
I'm a linux person as well :)
glad there's no vista, having to click on one permission after another to find that it doesn't work is a little frustrating.
If you need a hand with the basics of MAMP installs at all, don't hesitate to ask, I will be glad to help out.
I run a couple Linux flavors, Mac OS X and WinXP so feel free to pick my mind as well.
Personally I am of the opinion that everybody should be running Drupal locally, it saves a lot of time and makes for a great learning environment. Thus, I am looking forward to this particular meeting.
MAMP Pro
I already have MAMP Pro and Drupal 6.14 installed on my Mac (I use them for local development all the time), and am going to do a fresh D7 install this weekend. Could I perhaps get the specs for the Camp install so I know what all I need to have on localhost (if it's more than MAMP and Drupal 7)? I am planning to attend the install event as well, but just in case something happens (I'm working during that time normally and something might come up since I manage overseas developer teams I never get a "break" from, no matter what) and I can't make it I want to be sure I'm prepared.
Thank you,
Kelly Bell

Won't be Drupal 7 for this camp
Drupal 7 is still not even in beta yet. I won't be teaching that in the intro hands-on session at camp.
If you are planning to attend the Drupal Intro hands-on session at the beginning of camp please note that I will have a specific drupal install to download - will have it ready this weekend. Announcements to follow.
If you already have MAMP properly set up, have allocated enough php memory, etc. (which I believe MAMP does automatically), then you'll just need my specific download which will include drupal 6.14 + a variety of standard contrib modules, plus demo snapshots for the intro session.
installfest
I thought this Camp was actually going to be talking about D7 to some extent - so the "7" in the name I guess refers a series of DrupalCamps in NYC, of which this is #7 or something? (I just moved back here after an 8-year absence and so am new to DrupalNYC). I was thinking the "7" meant we were talking about Drupal 7. I'm an idiot, obviously.
I've been using D7 for several months now, testing and playing with it. I am so looking forward to working with it for real, and was really hoping that I could attend a Camp in advance of launch so I would be well-prepared for the update pathways, and also so I could prepare my current sites as best I can for the upgrade - changing modules that won't upgrade well, etc. - any tips and tricks available to help with moving forward. Doyou know of any plans here in NYC for a Camp or gathering of some kind to address these issues?
I'm an intermediate-to-advanced Drupal user. Do I need to attend the installfest or do I just need to get your distro? I already have 6.14 installed, but I'm sure there could be differences in our contrib modules (and of course I need those demo snapshots). Will you have a download link to a tarball of your distro available sometime this weekend then? Also - is there a listing somewhere of the advanced topics/track that will be covered at DC7 or is that still TBD?
Thank you for your help,
Kelly

Hadn't thought of it that way
I guess because I have context for what the 7 refers to having attended most of the other NYC camps. But I see your point. It certainly could be misconstrued as somehow related to Drupal 7.
There will be a lot of talk and excitement about Drupal 7 at the camp I'm sure.
barcamp stylee
I love Barcamp style - have done several and it's ALWAYS cool.
Thanks for your reply... looking forward to the Camp!

Mac/MAMP
Winston,
If you need any assistance with the Mac folks I'm willing to help - I could do a separate screen share / step-by-step if you think that would be helpful? I don't know how many Mac users are in the Camp, but anything I can do I'm happy to contribute.
Cheers,
Kelly

That would be helpful
I believe the webconference software we are using (dimdim) allows me to pass screen control to another participant so that might work nicely.
Woo Hoo - Web Based Installfest Complete!
Thanks to all the attendees for being so patient with me! Cradling the phone to my ear and typing at the same time was definitely a challenge. I promise I'm a "faster" instructor in person.
Look forward to meeting you all in person either Friday night or Saturday morning.
Remember, if you didn't get the install completely working, come in early to camp (well before 10 am) so I can try to help you then in person at our pre-camp installfest.
