User group meeting

A few of us are having coffee and talking Drupal on Thursday, January 28, 2010, in North Miami Beach. You're invited! As always, just bring your laptop, a copy of Pro Drupal Development or whatever else you need.

This event is free – in fact, one of the attendees will win a Using Drupal ebook from O'Reilly (a $36 value) – and no RSVP is required, but if you plan to attend please sign up by logging in and clicking the "Sign up" button below. Knowing how many people are interested in attending can help us better select good locations in the future. People who sign up will also have last minute details (if there are any) sent to them before the meeting.

When: Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 6:00-8:00pm
Where: Claudia Cafe, in Sunny Isles Beach, FL at 17632 Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach, FL 33160

Location

Google MapWe're meeting at Claudia Cafe, a Peruvian cafe and restaurant that's been the venue for several meetups in 2009. They're also known for their ceviche, organic salads and, on weekends, the 2 for 1 sangrias. Their phone number is 305-974-0021.

This location appears to be accessible by public transportation from Miami (use miamidade.gov's Trip Planner) and there is plenty of free parking in the restaurant's parking lot.

Topics

A few of the larks from Exaltation of Larks will be in town and are excited to meet other Drupalistas in the area. While we're happy to host and present at this Drupal Cafe meetup, we're hoping others will be interested in presenting, too. If you'd like to present on a topic or ask questions of the group, please feel free to leave a comment below.

We'll also have a report of how the DrupalCamp Florida planning is going.

Does anyone have a projector?

Does anyone have a projector? We forgot to bring ours and having one would greatly benefit everyone.

One topic we're happy to present is on image handling in Drupal 6 and how inline images have vastly improved since Fall, 2009. Building a site with IMCE, Image Assist or even Asset is not always a good idea when the site is being handed off to a client. We'll show how to combine half a dozen modules (don't worry, you probably use half of them already) to implement a gorgeous, intuitive image handling solution for newbies, site editors and experienced admins alike.

I forgot to mention, we'll be giving

I forgot to mention, we'll be giving away a Using Drupal ebook from O'Reilly (a $36 value) to one of the attendees. No purchase necessary, void where prohibited, you must be present to win, etc.

Awesome!

Glad someone is bringing the meetups back. :-) Can't wait!

Florida DrupalCamp 2010

We'd love to have a large contingent of South Florida Drupalers at Florida DrupalCamp next month. Think you guys can spend a few minutes discussing/promoting the camp at this meetup?

If anybody is interested in presenting a session, please let me know in the comments below!

I think I might..

I might be able to go next month. I'll be there for the sofla meetup for sure. I've been messing around with aegir and context/features lately. There might be some interest in that.

meetup schedule update!

christefano's picture

It turns out that our venue has another reservation for the space at 8pm. With great apologies, I've had to reschedule the meetup so that the meeting now starts at 6pm. This is only a one hour difference from before, but I realize that this might cause problems for some of you. Again, my apologies!

Projector - OK I have one

Feb. and March meetup location

robertson.adams's picture

I can offer the boardroom of John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as the location for the next 2 meetups (perhaps more) if we can use these dates:

Wednesday, Feb. 24th (anytime after 6pm)
Wednesday, March 24th (anytime after 6pm)

200 South Biscayne Blvd. Suite 3300:

Google Maps:

Parking in our garage is discounted after 6pm but not free. Meters are available and Metro mover is a good way to get here and away.

Great Meetup

Hey Drupalistas,

It was great meeting everyone today. Keep on Drupalin' in the new year, and see you next month with even more people, hopefully. :)

show notes

christefano's picture

Tonight we talked about a number of things, from Drush Make and Features to DrupalCamp Florida and topics for the upcoming meetups at the Knight Foundation in February and March. We also talked about labor costs versus capital investsments as a way of looking at open source projects and the different business models that Acquia uses.

I also gave a short presentation and, as promised, here are the show notes:

The modules used:

The editors used:

If you plan to use TinyMCE, neither WYSIWIG API 2.0 nor 2.x-dev support it right now. You can use TwoD's patch or choose a different editor until WYSIWYG API is updated.

Recommended extras:

Pathologic prevents broken links when using the Insert module (which uses absolute paths) in case a Drupal site is moved from one domain to another. This can happen when moving a site from dev to staging or live to dev.

Better Formats improves Drupal's input formats by, for example, setting default formats for specific roles and content types.
