Austin Drupal Users Group - Individual Introductions!

Walt Esquivel's picture

Hey Austin!

If you want to give a shout out as to what you do and how you're working with Drupal, that would be great!

During our meetups, we really don't have time for attendees to share detailed intros with the group. We tried intros at one of our meetups and, in the process, consumed over an hour when we could have been learning or teaching others about Drupal.

As a result, intros at future meetups will be great if they're no more than 10 seconds long each to provide basics such as your name, your organization, and what you're doing/hoping to do with Drupal, e.g. "Hi, I'm Walt Esquivel, I'm with Wellness Corps, and I'm using Drupal to help me establish a wellness presence primarily through Organic Groups." For everything else intro-related that you want to share with the Austin DUG, please do it online. This page is the place for you to do it! :)

So, feel free to provide whatever you'd like here on this Austin intro list. Here are some ideas:
- Name
- Organization (company, school, non-profit, government, etc.) you're with & what you do there for a living
- Link(s) to your Drupal website(s) (personal and/or organizational website(s))
- What you hope to accomplish with Drupal
- General background
- Education
- Hobbies
- Etc.

I'll take the lead by saying my name is Walt and I've started a company called Wellness Corps. I'm the founder and president of my one-man company so I do everything from installing Drupal modules to taking out the trash. :) With Drupal, my goal is to establish wellness-related groups all across our wonderful planet! :)

I like working with Drupal because it's easy to set up and provides so many contributed modules for customized functionality. My company's website is bare-bones at the moment as I just uploaded a few modules after trying them out on my test website. Come back in a week or two and it will be much more presentable.

My previous experience includes marketing, sales, consulting, and logistics, among others. I have an MBA in marketing/information mgt and an MA in human resources. I served in the Marine Corps as an officer for 8 years and there's more info about me than you ever want to know on my LinkedIn page. (Speaking of LinkedIn, please connect to me via LinkedIn so we can stay in touch.)

I see myself as helping others by setting up Drupal meetups to assist in the training and support of Drupal users/learners. How about you? How do you expect to give back to the Drupal community? Whatever it is, thanks in advance!

New to the Austin DUG

mgenovese's picture
mgenovese - Mon, 2007-07-30 03:38

Hi, my name is Matt Genovese. I just started using Drupal 5.1 about 3 months ago, so I'm a relative newbie to the system, although frankly I think the administration is fairly intuitive (though I had heard otherwise). In the past I used e107 CMS, but decided to switch for a variety of reasons to which I won't elaborate here.

By day, I'm a design verification engineer for microprocessors and SoC's at a local semiconductor company here in Austin, and I also do software consultation on the side. My academic background is in Computer Engineering, so I am fluent in both software engineering and hardware / VLSI design. I have a BSCE from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and an MSEE from UT-Austin. You can also find out more than even I knew about myself on my LinkedIn page.

I'm looking forward to attending some DUG meetings and learning from the other more experienced Drupal users in the area - what pitfalls I can avoid, proper ways to implement certain features, and even to do some Drupal module development.

Cheers,

Matt

New to Austin DUG

joshua_mora-gdo - Mon, 2007-09-10 03:56

Hello drupalers
My name is Joshua Mora.
I am new to drupal and I would like to receive advice about how to organize and share content (through a web interface) that I am currently storing in simple folders on my hard drive. I believe it should be easier than Zope but I still got alot of headaches trying to understand the mechanics/philosophy of drupal.
It is a shame I missed your meeting on September 4th. I hope to meet you on next meeting.

Hi

sambtaylor - Sun, 2007-09-16 23:32

I am very happy to find an Austin Drupal group. I am a poet and writer (with very limited web design experience) and an idea person. Recently, I have come up with a number of ideas for websites that I think have a lot of potential to make money and serve large niche communities. I have begun to try to figure out Drupal as the system to do all of them with. They are all social networks of one kind or another, but most have a specific focus or area of exchange that differentiates them from most social networks. I have 4-7 ideas I am planning to do at the moment--I think they are all very good ideas and a couple of them I think could really take off. I am reluctant to talk about them too much though until I actually get them goin. Nevertheless, I really look forward to meeting some other folks and getting their advice and guidance. I would also love to find the right partner for these projects, someone I resonate a lot with who is much more of a drupal expert than me. Ideally, I could focus mostly on the content and structure, while my partner focused on the advanced features and design. If there are any Drupal experts in Austin who would be interested in teaming up on something that could be a souce of longterm income, please get in contact me. In any case, I look forward to meeting everybody. Hopefully, at the next meetup.

Introduction

tanyainaustin-gdo - Mon, 2007-09-24 15:23

I am a financial adviser, and I work with a small financial advisory firm. Since we are a small firm, everyone does a variety of functions. However, I started by career as a EE. After getting a BSEE from U. of Illinois, I spent eleven years working in the semiconductor industry.

Most of my technical experience is hardware/firmware oriented, but I spent many years working with simple databases. Now I'm in the process of learning open source web languages. I started with HTML and CSS, and now I'm working on PHP and MySQL. I did some work with Mambo, but I have found Drupal a lot easier to work with.

Currently, I'm trying to set up an on-line data base. And I'd like to use Drupal as a front end.

I am very excited to find that there is a Drupal user's group in Austin, and look forward to meeting people on 10/2.

rareo - Mon, 2007-10-08 03:18

I work for a local gaming company and have decided to start working on my own projects again (in my spare time.) A buddy and I are building a social networking site which will have a few unique tools. We found Drupal and have been impressed with it and plan to have a prototype up in 2-1/2 weeks (we'll see how that goes.)

We actually spent a lot of time comparing RoR vs. LAMP development and found that we could find more people capable of building PHP-based projects than RoR -- and thus more people that aren't as busy as Ruby devs. As such, we're hoping to interface with people to share ideas and support each others efforts.

We are literally, two-guys in a garage, building what "we" believe is a cool thing.

I hope to catch the next meet up for the group ;-)

Peace,

-Joey

New 2 Austin. New 2 Drupal.

New 2 Austin. New 2 Drupal.

Recently moved to Austin with my wife, Jennifer, and a big furry yellow cat (Harry). I work in software engineering with an international software company. In addition to being a software engineer (Physician Operating Systems), I am also an unpublished author of many long lost blogs in the blogosphere, am a political junkie, caffeine freak, psuedo-buddhist, and habitually late person. I'm also an Unlicensed Massage Therapist (UMT).....at least my wife thinks so ;)

I'm beginning to develop with Drupal just now. I don't have a lot of web development experience, so I'm probably that long haired hippie in the Barnes and Noble computer section drinking a Mocha and poking around in the Drupal/PHP/JQuery section.

My intention is to begin a website for political junkies like myself, but I've been known to start something and end up with something completely unexpected. Which, I might add, is a great way to live life too.

moving to austin, looking for a druple developer

jessicashortall - Tue, 2008-04-15 12:34

Hi, my name is Jessica; I'm currently located in London, UK, but moving to Austin this coming autumn. I am developing a web concept now (from the business end - I am not a developer) which I think it pretty exciting, and since I am moving to Austin I figured it might be best to look for a developer in my future hometown. Would love to hear from anyone looking for freelance work - I will likely need a combination of off-the-shelf and "tweaked" elements so I'm looking for someone who is interested in the iterative process. Ideal person would also be excited about the concept - which is about supporting families as their loved ones go through the aging process.

You can get me at jessica (at) jessicashortall.com

Thanks!

Hello,

I am interested in creating a community website using drupal and hope that I can learn from others in this group. In addition, I will probably be looking to hire a company/individual to help me get the site set up correctly in hopes of not having to make a lot of changes down the road.

New to Drupal and to Web back ends

Cliff's picture
Cliff - Sun, 2008-08-10 19:55

Hi, I'm Cliff, and I'm trying to learn php, mysql, Apache, and Unix on a fast track so I can implement a Drupal-based Web site for my congregation, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.

My day job is coordinating Web development for a large state agency. I'm skilled in writing xhtml-clean code, structuring Web pages (I won't say "designing" because I know just enough about that to realize how much a design I do on my own would suck), testing for usability, and building in accessibility. I'm learning on the fly about scripting (at work, we have programmers who do all that) and all the hidden pieces that make a Web site work. (Again, at work we have others who worry about that end.)

I have been asked to completely overhaul the St. A's site and add features that are manageable only with a CMS. In quickly studying the options, I've decided that Drupal has the right balance of power and ease of use to work in this environment. (I guess what really sold me on it was when I found out the grad students at UT's writing program use it to maintain Web pages for the classes they teach. To me, that seems like a pretty good test case for "ease of use.")

But now I'm stuck. My current computer is a 700-MHz iMac running OS X 10.3.9, and I can't find a php/mysql/Apache bundle for such an old system. I've downloaded php and mysql and turned on Apache, but I can't seem to get them working together well enough for me to actually install Drupal on this computer or on the Web server. And, in the meantime, I've picked up the responsibility for managing the current site, which seems to be php-based but also looks like the pages might be edited individually. Fortunately, it's only 10 or 15 pages, so keeping it limping along while we build something better shouldn't be that hard.

As for the redesign, another member of my church is a talented designer and has drafted a few options for consideration. But to implement them efficiently, she needs me to get Drupal installed on our new site. And I'm stuck in the middle of the installation process, frustratedly creating mysql databases, usernames, and passwords with no idea where they're winding up and how to tell Drupal to find them when it tells me there ain't none where it's looking (not that I'm quoting the error message verbatim, but that seems to be the gist of it).

It would be great if I could find someone with enough Mac and Drupal experience to help me get the installation complete. Just having a clear general overview would help. (Anyone else notice how many times in the install process you get blindsided by a request for a username and password, with no indication as to whether it could -- or even should -- be the same as one you've already used? It would be nice to know up front how many different usernames will be needed, the role each will have in site management, and any limitations on the name or password. If I could organize that in advance, I could concentrate on everything else when I do the actual install.)

It would also be great to meet up with folks who use Drupal in various ways. My friends at church have big dreams for our site, and I'd like to be sure my ignorance doesn't become a barrier to making those dreams come alive.

Does the Austin group meet up regularly? If so, when and where?

erik.summerfield - Tue, 2008-09-02 21:23

hi my name is Erik Summerfield. I just bought a house in Austin a few weeks ago and will be moving from Washington DC at the end of the month.

I have been working with drupal for about a year now and have been being paid to do it for about 4 months. I work for the Case Foundation, a foundation started by Jean and steve Case. Our mission is to, encouraging collaboration, supporting successful leaders, and fostering entrepreneurship in the nonprofit sector. So for we have used drupal for 3 projects (http://giving.casefoundation.org, http://miyo.casefoundation.org and http://www.socialcitizens) and are currently exploring its use on our main site.

I have not been very involved with the drupal community so far but am excited about getting more involved. I am hopeful that some of the work that we do can be made in to modules and used by others.

Critical mass in Bryan/College Station

bcswebstudio's picture
bcswebstudio - Thu, 2008-10-09 20:52

Would any Texas-state travelers care to comment on the potential for a Bryan/College Station area drupal users group? I see http://groups.drupal.org/central-texas and http://groups.drupal.org/austin, and I haven't been able to travel to Austin for a while now. However, on front page of d.o is a really neat project deployment by a the huge student activities group at TAMU:
Student Activities Supports 170 Drupal 6 Sites at Texas A&M
and I thought hmmm.. there are drupalers here in our overly wp-saturated area..

And wouldn't it be nice to have a gmaps node view of all groups organized by geographic location? Or search by proximity to zipcode. It would be a simple way to find a local group wherever you are!

Hello to all

T1TAN23's picture

Hi Austin DUG,

My name is Trent Watkins and I am the CIO for a technology integration company called TrintroniX Technology & Innovation located just north of Austin in Leander, Texas. We started the company back in February of 05 and we are growing by leaps and bounds every day. We try to tout ourselves as a one stop IT shop with our focus on helping companies overcome the challenges of integrating the newest technologies into their companies.

A little about me...
I have been doing web/desktop application development for about 9 years and SQL development for about 12 years. I have been tinkering with all things IT for as long as I can remember and I get the biggest high from figuring out a solution for the most impossible problem. I forced my self to become a Drupal guru in just under a year because of some web projects I had outsourced to so called drupal developers tanked, and the project requirements were not being met due to their lack of understanding drupal. So in order to save face with the clients I had to immerse myself in all things drupal 24/7 for a couple of months so I could complete and deliver the projects. Now I feel like (although probably not true) I can do just about anything with drupal that I would have previously only been able to do with ASP/PHP pages. I think this tool is the best thing to hit web development since the implementation of the javascript XMLHttpRequest object.

To ALL Drupal Developers...
I am always seeking experienced and hungry drupal developers to outsource projects too. I have more drupal work that I can keep up with and right now I have about 12 people I outsource work too, spread out all over the country. I would prefer to keep my resources local so I can treat them to lunch and beer every now and then, but finding quality people that truly know what they are doing has been challenging. So if you are interested in some side work, please contact me and I'll put you to work based on your skill set.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can at my first meet-up and if there is anything I can do to assist anyone, please do not hesitate to contact me.

FrugalFeaster.com is a social website designed to help users find and share details about restaurant deals in their area. The site is primed for stage two development and we’re in search of an experienced Drupal architect to help take it to the next level.

My business partner and I have tested the concept in the site’s current beta version over the course of the last 4 months. The response has been overwhelmingly positive from users, the local media, and local restaurants. Here are some examples of the press coverage we’ve received:

Hello fellow Austin Drupalers!

My name is Terry Brown, and I am Chief Arachnid at Green Spider Design (www.greenspiderdesign.com). Our company has been Drupaling for a little over a year now and has completed roughly 75 projects in Drupal. I look forward to meeting all of you at the next meetup.

I'm so happy that someone alerted me to this group! I feel sort of stupid for not having thought about looking on Drupal.org for an Austin Group. When I thought of finding a meetup group I inherently thought of meetup.com, so I went there looking and set up a group when I didn't find one. Does anyone see any value in having a presence there for this group? If so, I'm more than happy to hand over the group I created to the organizers of this group!

Groups.drupal.org vs. Meetup.com (and other "group" sites)

Walt Esquivel's picture
Walt Esquivel - Mon, 2009-03-09 15:49

Hi Terry,

With regard to groups.drupal.org (g.d.o) and its functionality and UI, I acknowledge other platforms/UIs exist that are far more pleasant, interactive, etc. Like you, I've used Meetup.com before and I do enjoy its functionality and UI. As they say, however, we must eat our own dog food. If every person at the beginning of g.d.o's existence had wanted to use something like Meetup.com in lieu of g.d.o, the vast number of improvements that currently live on these pages would not have been possible.

In addition, we want a centralized location for people to meet online and so the use of Meetup.com (or Google Groups, Yahoo Groups, etc.) is not something I would support. G.d.o needs to be THE central online focal and meeting point for anyone desiring to do Drupal-related meetups, events, etc. that are local in nature, e.g. the Austin DUG.

As such, I welcome your firm to get involved in making code and/or financial contributions to Drupal and/or to collaborate with others who are doing so in order to improve the UI of groups.drupal.org. It is only through the volunteer donation of time, money, and resources from individuals such as you and organizations such as yours that Drupal is what it is today, and it is only through future donations of time, money, and resources that the code will improve and, perhaps, meet all or almost all of your needs.

In closing, if you see a DUG UI shortcoming or you see something that would make the DUG UI better, please feel free to find the appropriate place to comment and/or discuss things with others who may know a bit about your need and/or who can provide helpful feedback. There are different places you can discuss your ideas and needs (forums, IRC, a specific module's "Support" section, etc. - - all on drupal.org), so I urge you and your firm to get involved in helping make Drupal even better than it already is.

Thanks for your suggestion and welcome to the Austin DUG!

Best,
Walt

OK, I changed my mind...cross-posting sounds good

Walt Esquivel's picture
Walt Esquivel - Mon, 2009-04-13 21:11

When I replied to Terry's post, I acknowledge that I was trying to get Austin Drupalers to eat the Drupal dog food. I understand that not everyone always enjoys eating the same ol' Drupal dog food...and that a diet including other dog foods may be preferable. ;) (OK, I think I've overused that analogy!)

So...based on a recent email I received which strongly suggested the use of other websites such as Meetup.com for cross-posting purposes and that it might help attract a different audience, I think the the logical next step would be for anyone creating / wanting to publicize Austin events to cross-post them onto the Meetup.com group that Terry created. Any other websites we should be cross-posting onto? I hadn't thought about the fact that posting onto Meetup.com might attract a different audience but that sounds pretty good to me! So thanks Terry for the original suggestion and sorry I shot down your request at that time.

I look forward to someone taking charge and cross-posting future Austin events...hint hint. :)

Meetup.com

GreenSpiderDesign's picture
GreenSpiderDesign - Mon, 2009-04-13 22:46

Walt,

I do agree that the meetup.com presence is a positive thing for the G.D.O group overall. And when I created it I certainly was not trying to compete with an existing DUG, which is why I expressed how excited I was to learn that there was already a strong group in existence. So, with that said, I am more than willing to manage the Meetup.com group to post meetup details there. I think I read somewhere that we also have a LinkedIn presence? Again, that would be good too if it doesn't already exist.

Also, I see huge value in contributing to the Austin Drupal community, so anything we can do as an organization to facilitate the growth of the Austin Drupal developer pool would have my full support.

Just let me know what we can do to help!

Terry

Sounds great!

I think you managing "the Meetup.com group to post meetup details there" sounds great!

I don't know about whether or not we have a LinkedIn presence but feel free to pursue that as well.

I hear there's a DrupalCamp Texas being held in Austin later this year so that would be, I think, a great opportunity for you to get involved. Todd over at Four Kitchens can provide more info on DrupalCamp so feel free to contact him.

Thanks!

I have been using Drupal for 3 years now as a hobbyist and have just started working on several sites using Drupal professionally in the past few months. I mostly do installation and simple customization of open source systems, along with mid level sys admin stuff. I can tweak and rearrange markup and simple code as needed but am not a coder.

I am interested in learning more about Drupal best practices and meeting other Drupalers I can call on for advice and contract work.

Dear Austin Drupalers,

My name is Scherry Sweeney and I the marketing webmaster for a company called Blue Coat – www.bluecoat.com. Our website has been built by the IT team using Drupal, which I have no experience with, despite my 10 years as a web designer and developer. The intent is that IT will handle the backend, and I'll be responsible for the frontend, but with no knowledge of how the system works, is set up, can be manipulated, I'm feeling lost in the dark. I don't know how far I can push things, or what requests are unreasonably difficult. I also can't seem to do much besides update content without the help of IT. I'm just not used to that. :-) I'd like to learn the system so that I can have more flexibility, and so that I can help IT instead of be a burden to them.

I look forward to meeting you all at the next DUG meeting.
Scherry

I'm Zach and I am currently in Denver Colorado, but have family in Austin and visit very frequently. I have been theming Drupal for about 2 years now and really enjoy the challenges and triumphs of working in it.

Looking forward to building connections with other Designers, Themers and Developers through projects and Beers!

Have a question, don't hesitate to let me know.

Best,

Zach M

Hi Austin Folks

My name is Chadwick and I just moved back to Austin a couple of months ago, after about 4 years in SF. Before that, I went to UT and graduated in Computer Science. It's good to be back!

I'm a freelance web developer, and most of the websites I make these days are built using Drupal. I'm pretty comfortable with it, from theming to module development, but I'm sure there's still plenty I could learn from other people. I occasionally blog with tips for web developers on my website (http://www.chadwickwood.com).

Anyway, I don't know much of anyone in Austin who's using Drupal, so I figured this would be a good place to start. So, hello!

My name is Fito Kahn. I am working for a non-profit that is wanting to create an Intranet and we are using Drupal. I would love to talk to someone who has some experience in setting up a Drupal site. I have it setup and im starting to add content but i want to make sure that im doing it right. I have also setup a site for the Austin Jazz Alliance (www.austinjazzalliance.org) in joomla. I am thinking about converting over to Drupal so if you all have any thoughts on that, it would be much appreciated. If there is someone out there that is willing to help me out, i would be glad to provide beer and pizza for a few hours of tips and tricks so i can get the site up....
thanks.

My name is Jerad Bitner and I'm the co-founder and CTO of Rapid Waters Development. I've been involved in Drupal since 4.6 and have worked for Sony BMG in New York City, and ParentsClick Network - a Division of LifeTime Digital in San Francisco. I've left the corporate world to try my hand at my own Drupal shop with my best friend David Burns under the extremely competent help of Liza Kindred and the fantastic help of some very talented individuals who comprise our team! We're virtual and all over the country with no real home base other than #rwd on IRC :D

My fiance is a traveling occupational therapist and we're currently working our way across the United States, working, playing and evangelizing the good work of Drupalistas everywhere! Our next stop is Austin! So we're looking for advice on what is good, and what to steer clear from; where to hang out, and where to meet people. (Oh, and the best BBQ of course! ;)

So hello, and hit me up if you wanna get some coffee or beers and talk Drupal! I look forward to the meetups and getting to know you!
