Q and A | High performance Drupal - Mercury EC2

Michael Hofmockel's picture
Start:
2010-02-22 19:00 - 21:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:

I suggest we start with a simple Q and A to get the Ninjas in training moving forward.

Then I've been working with the Mercury EC2 AMI created by Chapter Three that I would like to show.

We usually head to the bar at 9 for the important conversations.

When and Where

I would like to start learning more about Drupal ASAP. Is there an email or contact phone number to get more information?

No, not really.

Drupal is open source software, so there really isn't a central email or phone number to contact.

If you're new, you can either:

1) Do it yourself. Browse the online handbooks, buy a book, attend a class, ask questions in the forum, and/or attend our Drupal Users Group meetings.

2) Have somebody do it for you. Contact one of the many businesses that specialize in drupal consulting, design, and development.

meet ups

I live here and Cedar Rapids and work on Drupal in my free time. I have it installed on my localhost. I want to learn as much as possible.

What for?

What are you going to use drupal for?

Everything

I tried to take computer programming courses while attending the U of I. My math skills are lacking. I found myself in Adobe courses a couple semesters later. I want the ability to build user driven sites. Is there any groups that meet up locally?

Someday in CR

Hi Joshua!

Join the Iowa and Iowa-CR groups to keep updated on local events.

I started the Iowa-CR group for eastern Iowa, but we have yet to have enough interest to have meetings. When the weather gets better, I'm hoping to get to the meetings in Ames.

Database Questions

I am a little more than halfway through "Sams Teach Yourself" text and I want to switch from localhost to a live database. I also have the textbook "Using Drupal" although it is based on Drupal 5.

After speaking with a rep from GoDaddy he said the best way is to get a virtual server and learn Plesk from Parrallels. He took into consideration that I want to build complex websites using many modules so I must have the ability to install them.

Should I take the time to learn database management with Plesk or is there an alternative to this?

... I should have joined this group a long time ago.

Plesk???

Most people just use ftp. If you want a public site just get a cheap web hosting site from godaddy, not a virtual server.

If you get a virtual server you're going to have to learn a lot more than just drupal / website stuff. I think he's trying to make some money off you.

By the way, your questions really aren't about "Q and A | High performance Drpal." You may want to consider starting a new thread.

Hi, I'm sorry, I have to back out. An unexpected task came up and I'm not going to be able to get to Ames tonight. I'll be there in spirit.
