NYC Weekend hackathons

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

To get the ball rolling i would like to call out all potential participants to reply here who you are so we know you want to participate.

the general idea that i got is that we'll have a hackathon this upcoming weekend. whether it will be on sunday or saturday is yet to be decided. i am up for either.

few issues that need to be resolved.
1) Where to meet?
We need a reasonable space where we can be loud and have fast wifi (slow RDC to my home PC is untollerable by my standards)
2) What issues are we going to address?
are we going to pick on views/panels module(s) or something else?
3) ???world domination???

ok so lets get this started, please say here if you have a suggestion for the WHERE and WHAT.

thank you.

Count me in

I'll be there. I'm thinking Sunday is better, but Saturday is doable. I'd also suggest we start with a bit less complex of a module for our first session so that we can break in any 'virgin' module devs. ;)

Not sure what though and would be ok with views personally.

Sunday

jakilevy's picture

my vote is for sunday.

i just joined and started working with Drupal - definitely interested in seeing how others work with this. i have experience in wordpress have seen that it translates over pretty easily.

weekends in cafes can be a bad idea unless someone gets there early and stakes out space.
the tea lounge in park slope is nice and spacious and has reliable internet.

Something easy but less

litwol's picture

Something easy but less visible could be dhtml_menu. personaly its one of my favorite modules but the d6 port has been terrible. so it will require mostly D6 work.

edit: i should note that d6 menu system knowledge is a plus. i suppose we can teach it during hackathon. knowledge of theming is also a big plus.

Depending on the scheduled date / time and the location I would definitely be interested

I'd like to attend

I want to learn more about coding. Will try not to annoy anyone.
Please let me hang out withe the big kids!

Please Note

This session is not for the weak-of-heart! ;)

We're going to be delving into some actual PHP code and working with real bugs in the system with the combined goal of releasing a patch to fix which ever bug we decide upon.

So please, if you show up, have some working knowledge of PHP. Help will be offered for things like how the hook system works and how to roll patches, but basic PHP will probably not be taught.

Heart is strong. PHP weak.

Will come as an observer and stay out of the way of those doing the heavy lifting.
NuB questions will be checked at the door,

dhtml_menu sounds like a good middle ground.

Views and Panels are some of the most complex modules that Drupal has, not to mention that they are built as OOP, where most of drupal core and many modules people create are procedural.

I'd like to suggest the Meta Tag module, it's an important module that hasn't kept up-to-date with the rest of Drupal. It would also allow us to delve into Panels and Views ( because that's where it lacks good support ). This way we'll be developing procedural code while inspecting how OOP modules are structured. I have a good understanding of how it's put together and can get us up to speed quickly.

As much as I'd like to delve into Drupal 6 code, it's still young and we'd be teaching/learning more than we'd be producing good code that we can give back to the community.

If the focus of the

If the focus of the hackathon is to contribute code back to the Drupal community, I think that Drupal 6 bug fixes are critical.

Just give me a time and place

Just give me a time and place and I'll be there. 1pm Sunday at the Tribeca Grand would work.

How about pick your poison?

Tresler's picture

While it could be entertaining to watch 10 people all working on the same bug at the same time.... How about we just pick what we want to work on, and then use the groups as a resource? This way the gurus can hack on Views, and the newer people can choose something simpler.

Personally, I probably can't make it until later in the afternoon on Sunday, although Saturday is fine all day. I'll also probably use the time to work on a new module I've been building.

i think its a great idea. i dont think its very efficient having 10 people hacking the same thing... i was thinking maybe splitting into 2-3 member groups to hack a problem could be more useful.

as for the ideas what to work on. today i noticed that D6 critical patch queue is down to only 20 issues! most of the issues have patches that need reviews. i think we could work on that to help d6 get out weeks faster than it otherwise would.

Trouble finding a meeting time?

marketanomaly's picture

Of course, if we are having trouble finding a meeting time and place we could always just plan to meet in the chat room at 11am Sat. or Sun. and jointly hack a particular bug/module for a couple hours. You could do that in your slippers.

Saturday works best for me.
