GHOP Project: Create promotional artwork for the forthcoming release of Drupal 6

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
cf_al_bs's picture

Hello all,
I recently claimed a task on the Google Highly Open Participation Contest. It was to create some promo artwork for the release of Drupal 6.
The task can be found here.

Part of the task is to run the artwork by the Marketing Group to get feedback and narrow it down to 2 final design ideas. So I'm here to present some ideas to you. All feedback is welcome, suggestions, criticisms, etc.

Please take a look at the images attached. I have created some mock-ups at all three sizes requested, but not all the designs are in all 3.

EDIT: Latest revision below
Minimal style:

Blue Shiny style:

I like metallic and minimal the most, as they seem the most polished. The blue metallic one at http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2167/2076260781_0268acb073_o.jpg is probably my favourite.

I like the pun of the abstracted one as well, although the red Druplicon is eating my soul a little. ;) It might be neat to see something similarly "punny" on the "Built with Drupal" one... have him wearing a construction hat or something? Then again, I am very low on sleep so that might be an awful idea. ;)

One thing that's not doing much for me is the font choice, however. Unfortunately FF Max Bold (the Drupal font) is not a free font, but I wonder if there are maybe less common-looking fonts (I think that's either Arial or Helvetica?) that might give it a little bit of style.

Free fonts

but I wonder if there are maybe less common-looking fonts...

Here you can find a good selection of free fonts (some of which are really nice);

Maybe you can find one that suits the intended image of the artwork.

Thanks.

Thanks guys. I took your comments on board and updated a few of the images.

"although the red Druplicon is eating my soul a little. ;)" - hehe! ya i thought that might not go down so well, but I just wanted to put it out there.

Any other comments?

Various thoughts

-I really like the construction hat, although I think it's a bit crooked. Maybe that's because of the point on his head?

-Red Druplicon = unholy. :-)

  • I like the first "Get Drupal", visually. What if it said "Got Drupal?", in reference to the "Got Milk" ad campaign in the US?

  • The "built with Drupal" buttons are good, but the problem is they fade to white at the top so I can't see where they end. Could they fade to a lighter blue instead of white, or perhaps fade to light blue and then back to solid blue at the top?

Not sure if I should tie it in here, but it could be relevant. :-) It's an article on marketing slogans.

Updated...

Ok I've now updated the images above. All are now in PNG format for better quality,
-Construction hat fixed.
-Built with Drupal now fades to a light blue instead of white.
-Metalic 'Get Drupal' now 'Got Drupal?'
-Minimal style remains unchanged.
-Red Druplicon removed due to public demand ;)
-Stripes style removed also as nobody liked it.

I like the 'Get Drupal'
Powered by is nice
'Got Drupal' - the black text disappears in the the mist of the top gradient.

The construction hat is unbalanced and looks like it's just pasted 'over' the Druplicon rather then Druplicon 'wearing' it..

The gray gradient on the three overpowers the overall image which is nice. To describe, the gray draws my eyes up into it and pulls away form the main image/message.

Ok...

In the interest of wrapping this task up (you've been very patient, cf_al_bs!) let's go with the following:

One more round of revisions that takes these things into consideration, and I think we can mark this sucker done. :)

Good stuff.

If you've got it in you for one more, I'd suggest the "Powered by Drupal" (6) - http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2397/2080972904_32200f6e54_o.png - with something of the "Got Drupal" styling - http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2052/2080188359_8f00a34f81_o.png

And I appreciate the slogan "Built for the Web" a lot, though that one wouldn't fit in the requested sizes well.

Some suggestions

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2337/2080188035_2c935209b8_o.png :
Look at decreasing the lineheight of the text, and scale Druplicon a bit accordingly. Have you looked at right-aligning the text?

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2101/2080972972_577359095d_o.png
Put at least as much space between Druplicon and "Get" as there is between "Get" and "Drupal", Druplicon is too close to the text now. Maybe kern the words a bit tighter and cut the blue line where the p sticks through, just a pixel of white on both sides.

And the drupal spotlight bannersize for the drupal.org homepage is 200wx221h, not 300x150. Can't attach it but here's a simple photoshop template.

Just updated the images

cf_al_bs's picture

Just updated the images there now.
- Now just the two chosen styles and the metallic one from the comment by Benjamin Melançon above just for consideration.
- Now using the Drupal Typography found here: http://cvs.drupal.org/viewvc.py/drupal/contributions/docs/marketing/logo...
- Added the number 6 in the 'blue shiny' style. Doesn't work so well on the minimalistic style ones Due to space restrictions and line height conflicting with the Drupal typography. But will try sort it out if i get more time. (I've had exams all this week :( )

I went ahead and marked this task complete...
