Meetups, Lessons, Hack-a-thon, Social

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

We' are growing large enough that (I think, at least) we can start making events specific to certain demographics in the community.

Beginners might not like a Hack-a-thon, and you prepare differently to teach a lesson, than you do to drink a beer. I'm thinking of the following four classifications, add to or discuss as necessary. I'd love to generate some action items for structuring the groups ste here out of this thread.

Lessons - By request, or because its what someone feels like teaching. These (I feel) should be worked through the http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-dojo as well as our own group. The space can be organized independently, completely online, or, I think Polytechnic offered up space more regularly if we had event different than BarCamp - I think these would fit wonderfully there in a classroom.

Meetups - Our once a month deal where we meet, and talk about what we are doing - throw questions out when we have them, no formal structure. This is where we come to just talk drupal and get some group help solving our own drupal problems.

Socials - Beer. Maybe Coffee. And we talk - doesn't even need to be about drupal - its just social. Location is bars or restaurants.... litwol suggested lunches - all of these fall under the 'social' category.

Hack-a-thon - Bring a laptop, a power strip and something to work on. Help is offered on higher coding topics but don't expect anyone to teach you php syntax.

Camps - Every 6 months to a year. In the past these have been 1 day for newcomers, and a second day for power users. 8-10 hours presenting on all things drupal-esque.

Can we add to this list? Can we refine them more? If we are cool with it - I would like to suggest that marketanomoly add them as types of events, or tags, or whatever it is you do here at groups.drupal.org.

Created the categories you suggested plus DrupalCamp. You should see the categories appear in the right nav column and you should be able to select a category for any post that you create. Please start tagging your posts and let me know what other categories you want.

sub-terms for DrupalCamp

ericg's picture

can we set some terms that are children to the DrupalCamp term

my thoughts are:

-DrupalCamp4
--Directions
--Workshop Proposals
--Information
--Registration
--Sponsors
--Volunteers/Organizers

we could then add in a new DrupalCamp5 with it's own sub terms for the next camp and keep things cleanly organized and sortable on the site.

Quick question about taxonomy

I think that I should only need one vocabulary for all categories and subcategories, right? Is there any reason why I would need to have a separate vocabulary just for DrupalCamp4, DrupalCamp5, Meetups, etc..? Otherwise, I'll just add all terms to the same vocabulary. Thanks for the breakdown!

one vocabulary should work I think

I think that one vocabulary should be fine (even preferable) with drupalcamp as a top level term and DrupalCamp4; DrupalCamp5 etc as children and then with the subtopics I proposed (and maybe others) as children of those.

does that sound reasonable to you?

Sounds good to me

Sounds good to me. There is a bug with the polls, so I can't categorize them for now. But I will categorize the other posts. Is there a place to report bugs with the groups sites? The issue with to polls is definitely a bug.

not sure, but...

there is a "site infrastructure" category on the contact form
http://groups.drupal.org/contact
I guess that's the place to start?
anyone know for sure?

correct link

If there are site issues email a detailed response to the link above and, if you have time, get on #drupal and talk to someone about it. Problems do get fixed on g.d.o but only if there are detailed explanations of what the problem/bug is, how it can be recreated and then if there is a volunteer (hint, hint ;) )

I tried to properly categorize stuff related to the DupalCamp, but can't change the category of a poll once it is created. When I try to edit the poll the text for the fields get blanked out, so I would be overwriting the text for each poll choice. I'm not sure if I would be overwriting the results too. I'm submitting this issue to the groups admins.

Awesome ideas

Cool of you to consolidate all of these ideas that have been floating around. I agree with them all whole-heartedly.
