There's a fantastic Irish pub and restaurant in Kyoto I thought would be a great place to meet.
Fun owner, good food, good drinks, and free wireless internet access (BYOL - bring your own laptop :-)).

京都市にMcLoughlin'sというすごくいいアイルランドのパブがあってそこで最初の集まりを行ったらいいかなと思います。McLoughlin'sはオーナーが優しいし食べ物と飲み物がうまいし無線インターネットが無料で使えます。

Irish pub sounds nice. I like Irish scotch whiskey. ;)
And it seems easy to find the location.
Looking forward to meeting you all, too.

Agenda

setvik's picture

I thought it would be helpful to have a rough agenda of things to talk about this Sunday, so drawing on the Drupal Beijing group for agenda inspiration, here's a few things we could pow-wow about.

  • Introductions
  • Introductions of the websites/projects we're each working on
  • Drupal 6 status
  • Drupal in Japan / Status of Japanese translation of Drupal
  • Q/A on drupal projects we're working on. i.e. if there's a Drupal related problem/project that has you stuck, bring it up; we can all put our brains together and hopefully point each other in the right direction.

Post a comment below if you have additional topics you'd like to cover.

Also, I know many of you can't make it down to Kyoto that evening, but the pub has wireless internet, so we could easily spend some time that evening meeting online as well so that more people can participate.

What do you guys think? for those of you that can't come to Kyoto, would you be up for meeting a bit online that evening? It would be easy enough to meet up in an IRC chat channel (#drupal?). (would IRC work for a first online meetup?)

ok, looking forward to Sunday.

Hopefully see (or chat) with you guys soon,

Stein

IRC?

Drupalace-1's picture

I don't know whether conducting the whole pub meeting simultaneously on IRC would prove tiring for the pub folks, or the at-home folks, or both, but does a short hello via IRC sound possible? Perhaps after the pub folks have had a little time to get some greetings and talk and beer behind them. What do you think would work?

hello IRC

setvik's picture

Yeah, an IRC meet&greet a bit after we've got a few beers in us at the pub sounds good.

We're getting to the pub at 5pm...

what time works for you guys for IRC? would 7:00pm work?

  • Stein

7 pm all right

Drupalace-1's picture

7 pm sounds good – won't have to miss any closing-day sumo action. : )

Er... I'm a little weak on the IRC concept (having been spoon-fed my iChat up to now). I picked up an IRC client and am ready to go, but please let me know any and all info I need to log in and join the chat.

hi drupalace, ok, the pub

setvik's picture

hi drupalace,

ok, the pub hasn't opened, but the owner was kind enough to let me in and take advantage of the wireless internet, so i'm back online.

Again, sorry about the craziness.

to do IRC, use your irc client to connect to irc.freenode.net and join the "drupal-japan" channel... I'll also be in the drupal and drupal-support channels. my user id is "setvik"

pub hours

Huge apology. I just realized the pub doesn't open until 6pm today. Uff-da.

We'll be there at 5pm however, and i will try and see if the owner can let us in early.

If not, there are cafes close by that we can hang out at until the pub opens.

Drupal in Japan?

castig's picture

Does anyone use drupal professionally (in Japan)?

Hi Castig, Welcome to the

Hi Castig,

Welcome to the group!

To answer your question, I started a business last summer with Drupal; we're using it to build a website that will allow ESL teachers and communities to connect, organize, and share teaching ideas and materials online.

Are you in Japan?

  • Stein

ESL website?

That sounds like a great idea - I think that would be very useful. Do you have a prototype online yet? I'd like to check it out. No, I'm not in Japan, but I'd like to get back and jump into the web scene if it was possible.

We're still working on the

setvik's picture

We're still working on the site, but you can check out http://shigajet.org. It serves the Shiga Prefecture community of JET teachers and is the foundation on which we're building. We converted it to Drupal last summer and are slowly building in the capacity to support multiple communities.

Slight change of plans

setvik's picture

Hi, we found out that there was some floading at the pub, so we're waiting for them to clean up and open it up again.
We'll be in IRC around 7:30 or 7:45 - sorry about that!

パブに着いたらなにかの機械が壊れて床が水浸しになっていました。入れるのは7時半ぐらいだそうですので、IRCができるのはそれ以降になりそうです。すみません!

IRC at 8:20?

setvik's picture

Stein is afraid that they won't be in IRC till around 8:20 (I'm his wife by the way - he doesn't have access to the internet at the moment). My apologies on his behalf.

Great meetup!

Thanks to Stein for organizing this event. And thanks to Teru for taking the time to come join the fun! The first meeting went off great, even with the change of plans. We ended up going to a different Irish Pub in Kyoto and it had live music. Great fun everyone. I cant wait until the next meet up.

I really enjoyed the first meet up!

Thanks to Stein for organizing this event too. I'm really pleased to meet such talented guys as you. Both Stein and Mark have already created a nice website. It's really cool! And they've found a lot of possibilities in the drupal.
Well, Stein and Mark have lived in Japan for a long time, so they can speak Japanese. I suppose we need some more Japanese in the group, Japan. Please join us if you are interested in the drupal.
Thanks guys again, I really enjoyed the first meet up in Kyoto!
