The next meeting of the Berkeley Drupal User Group is scheduled for 7/27. I am looking for a presentation. If you've been working on something interesting that you'd like to share, please send me a brief description of your presentation.

We could also use a financial sponsor for pizza. $80 or some portion thereof.

Thanks!

Hi there, our site -- 510Families.com -- has recently launched and is a resource for east bay families, a little buggy but still fantastic. We would love to join your meeting. We're happy to share our site if you like. We are too poor to pitch in for pizza at this time.

Thanks for your offer

A demo of your site would be great. Have you presented it before? Would you want a 30 min slot? 60 min slot? People would be interested in the details of some of your features, e.g. the google maps, vocabulary/taxonomy stuff or other stuff that you think is technically interesting. You may know this, but it's good to at least create a basic outline of how you want to present the site and then leave 10+ min for questions.

Pizza is covered.

Thanks!

We'd be happy to share our site. Probably 30 minutes is enough time. What time and where is the meetup?

niccolox's picture

hey,
any news on a Berkeley meetup for 2011 ?

its a big year with OpenScholar, Aegir and Drupal 7 all coming onto the stage ! (along with some kick-arse installations like OpenPublish, Commons etc etc)

I am helping push a Drupal 6 / Fusion community college website into the sunlight and managing a build-out of OpenScholar for same college

lets do something early Feb ?

cheers

presentations - Puppet Aegir vs OpenScholar, Solr, Nutch

niccolox's picture

hi again Brian

I see you have a January speaker lined-up and I feel a bit awkward, like I am pushing in line etc and have a new suggestion...

am actually really interested in getting a presentation, having a discussion on the Puppet-Aegir script you've written for Cal, and would like a chance to compare your Puppet-Aegir vs Adrian Rossouw's Vertice Puppet-Aegir vs Omega8cc's Baracudda/Octopus scripts

whats are the features of each ? how do they differ ? strengths and weaknesses ? etc

https://github.com/bwood/puppet-aegir
https://github.com/Vertice/puppet-aegir
https://github.com/omega8cc/nginx-for-drupal

regarding the previous tentative request for OpenScholar presentation, was thinking it would make sense for me to possibly do that in March, and we do the Puppet-Aegir workshop in Feb ?

the format of the OpenScholar thing would be

Community College Drupal Case-Study
explorations in community college education, surviving the bleeding edge
or Drupal for Education for Noobie's
-Custom D6, Fusion+Skinr themes
-OpenScholar
-Multicore Solr
-Views3 and Apache Solr Views
-File Attachment search
-Solr multisite search
-Nutch

Use

Use https://github.com/Vertice/puppet-aegir over mine. Mine has lots of custom UCB stuff that I never had time to abstract out. Also my code is out of date becase UCB is standardized on SVN and I got lazy about syncing to GitHub. (I should just pull that project down.) Adrian does some crazy stuff with templates to been puppet to his will. Last I tested his stuff it worked.

If you want to use Nginx Omega8's script may be the way you want to go. I bought their Aegir VPS hosting solution and am in the process of moving personal sites there. I'm just a user, so I'm not interacting with Barracuda or Octopus directly.

Open Scholar:

Management here is pretty interested in Scholar. It might be worth trying to setup a meeting outside of BDUG where we could exchange some information. Adam at UC Merced (http://groups.drupal.org/user/15550) has also implemented Scholar. It would be cool if we could pull him in too.

Adam says that currently it is not possible to deploy Scholar with Aegir. Have you tried? It might have just been something Barracuda-specific IIRC.

What community college are you working with?

I'll send you my email via the d.o contact form incase it makes sense to take this conversation offline.

Omega8cc, Koumbit, OpenScholar etc

its an East Bay community college (will get permission before release the name), currently migrating content from an old, weird, proprietary web CMS across to a new, local design-agency built college-style Drupal 6 site which acts as a main marketing-oriented gateway. The main-site is rather expensive but pretty with a nice feature-set, I guess a typical marketing-oriented main, top-level-domain website.

Below that on sub-domains, using the OpenScholar "Projects" installation profile (as opposed to the alternative individual academic/scholar profile) we are creating departmental, business unit and other mini-sites. There is now a requirement to build a documented-oriented legal compliance website (lots of PDFs and Word docs), which we will do with OpenScholar. The Apache Solr module (and others like File Attachment Search) will be used with OpenScholar and the top-level-domain marketing website to provide an integrated multisite search.

There are also a number of satellite websites hosted externally; static html, blogs, etc which brings us to Nutch (this I haven't got running yet) but is my next focus and will crawl the satellite sites and we will use Apache Solr Views or Views 3 or something else to integrated those results along with the OpenScholar sites in a integrated search experience.

Another side project with OpenScholar is taking a Fusion+Skinr theme and converting that into OpenScholar friendly themes. I suspect that's going to involve a rather kludgey conversion of the HTML/CSS output of the Fusion sub-theme into a clone of an already existing standard OpenScholar theme.

The Omega8cc people have managed to platform OpenScholar into their Aegir hosting set-up. Am not sure if that's flowed upstream... would have to check, I think its just a patch, so shouldn't be a biggy.

Regarding Omega8cc, I paid for one of their packages for about 6 months and didn't really use it other than create a few websites from platforms, I immediately realized I wanted to be able to setup a workflow dev-stage-live cycle to make my own platforms and import them. The Barracuda/Octopus scripts are designed for hosting reseller type arrangements and creates symlinks to platforms which are shared between resellers.

I am really impressed with the Omega8cc scripts, installs, configures etc all sorts of cool stuff; Webmin, MariaDB, Nigix etc etc.. for me, the fact that the core is hardcoded to be Pressflow means that you have to upgrade any new profiles like Conference Organizing Distribution (COD) to Pressflow before you can create a new platform in Aegir.

Also, having the host-reseller folder and file structure set-up means that its a quite particular set-up, which is quite divergant from the other documentation I found online from Miguel, David Hall and Koumbit

I noticed too that Koumbit have a new Aegir hosting offering, but the price point is way beyond me.

Indeed, beyond the community college project (which I have stretched the envelope a fair bit with OpenScholar, Solr, Nutch) I intend to build a 1000 website Aegir/Drupal network by the end of the year. Considering my budget, it has to be a lot less than the $100 per website that David Hall is publishing about.

He created a unified web-application for a European client which has 2000+ Drupal/Aegir sites. Maybe Organic Groups in Drupal 7 might assuage the problem of how to you manage a website with 2000 roles ? But considering Features and Strongarm and the rich set of excellent installation profiles on offer I see a lot more Aegir roll-outs and a lot more Drupal sites...

A Cambrian explosion of Drupal sites. At the moment its mostly Omega8cc ( I guess) because its a single and integrated script set-up, but if Adrian's or yours or a new melange emerges, perhaps more oriented to the purist Aegir, Apache, MySQL single host model, than we might see even more.

Also, Adam kindly provided a colleague a very useful backgrounder on OpenScholar / Aegir which gave our college the resolve to match my audacity in suggesting OpenScholar up-front. I havent got the college to Aegir yet.

I am not sure I want to commit to Pressflow as a Drupal 6 core, to a lesser extent Nigix and MariaDB too. I know they work, and rock, but at my stage in the game and keen to remain fairly within the mainstream of Aegir community....

phew... yes, lets meetup in a couple of weeks ... I obviously need to talk to someone :>

have a good meetup, am busy today, will attend the February session, hopefully on EduGlu and maybe OpenScholar in March ?
