We've secured the dates for the weekend of March 29 & 30th. This is short notice, but I am still convinced we can hold a stellar DrupalCamp on those dates.
The one issue is that Polytechnic cannot provide the large room we are accustomed to for the first day but it is available for the second day.
We have several available options:
A) Just use a smaller room. Our cap is 120 anyway, and I am thinking, while it may be crowded, for our brief meet and greet a smaller room will work fine.
B) Switch the two days. Usually, we have been doing a beginners day and an advanced day. I think that format goes well, but we also tend to get less people on the advanced day. Were we to switch the first day and the second day we could have the large room on the second day.
C) Have a one day drupalcamp.
Also, did somebody make a barcamp.org page for us? Could you link to it if you have? If not, could someone do that? Thanks!

How do you sign up
Hi,
I'm new to the group and I didn't see how to actually sign up for DrupalCampNYC. Where do you go? I'm definitely interested in coming.
Dan
The barcamp page is
The barcamp page is http://barcamp.org/DrupalCampNYC4. I added a little content from the last camp to get us started. If you want to edit the page, you will find the password in the lower left corner of the login page.
Drupalcon followup!
This is great! I just got back from Drupalcon and I'm ready to dive in. I'm a Drupal noob that wouldn't be ready for a presentation, but I am pretty handy with my video camera and Final Cut.
I would definitely be up for one day - but not likely both. But that depends on what comes up in my non-Drupal life and how long the days are.

capellic: "I am pretty handy with my video camera and Final Cut."
So will you be bringing your camera to do some recording at DrupalCamp?
-forest
Sure!
Yes, I sure can!
However, maybe we should decide on recording only a subset of the sessions? I'm afraid that recording everything might produce a glut of content - and given that Drupalcon just happened all that will be posted online, there is going to be a lot of current content out there.
Furthermore, as I understand it, there will be multiple sessions as the same time? That alone will require some editorial decision making given there is one camera.
Barcamp Page
So I went to the Barcamp page, but I think that I need an invitation to create an account. How do I get one of those?
plan for the two days
my preference on how to handle the fact that we don't have the large room for the first day:
I think we should reverse the usual process. Let's do the hardcore geek code sprint day first, when all we have is the smaller rooms. and do the larger full-on unconference thing the second day.
I also think that having only a one day event is not a bad idea. Since we don't have much time to get things together, it'd be easier on the few of us that are going to be doing the bulk of the coordination if we limit it to one day.
I'm down
Think that sounds like a good idea.
i am down for the first day
i am down for the first day code sprint. i have some things i want to work on myself but may require consulting the rest of you :)

coming up for the camp
hey... just got back from dconBoston.08 and am fired up....
i am coming up from DC with the gf (who loves drupal btw) and will be staying in bklyn ... right around the corner.
we are moving back to The City in a couple of months and we couldn't wait til then to get involved.
should i bring a digital vid?
We should coordinate
We should coordinate with one of the organizers on the video taping. If we have concurrent sessions, then a 2nd camera would be great!
Or we should divide the labor and have one tape while the other edits?
I think we can wait until we get a little closer to the date before we set the plan in stone - but good to know that there is the possibility for another camera - especially since I may not be there both days.
this sounds great
the actual schedule and list of sessions will not be finalized until the morning of the event, so if we have a few people with cameras, we can figure out as we make the schedule what sessions might lend themselves more towards being taped.
Thanks for the offers of help on this level.
Also, the day of the code sprint won't have much to tape. A room full of geeks typing does not make for compelling video ;)
First Day - Second Day quandary...
I usually tend to think that a code-sprint before a day of conference isn't as productive. In general, we haven't had time to get the brains working collaboratively.
I'm also thinking we can just leave the coding room open for both days, and have sessions both days, just have the emphasis for newbies, and people just wanting general information, should really show up Sunday. And try to sructure the more advanced sessions for Sat.
thoughts?

need the large space for the unconference day
I really think that, in order to do it right, we need the large room for the start of the unconference day of sessions/workshops.
Mainly for the initial discussion/introduction and group process of scheduling what sessions are scheduled and when, but also for the lightning talks/show and tell session.
It is not ideal to reverse the days, but i think that given the space restrictions it is our only choice.
Also, it could be that forcing ourselves to think ahead of time about what we all want to do in the code sprint day will help. We should make a separate section of the sessions page for code-sprint day suggestions.
If we have one room during that day dedicated to an informal space for new users to get questions answered it could work for everyone.
Then the second day, we do the larger event.
not the best way to go, but the best option available to us (unless we want to look for a different space)
That is pretty much what I
That is pretty much what I am suggesting. I'm confused, are you disagreeing, or agreeing with me? Maybe I was unclear, what I am proposing:
Saturday - smaller number of more advanced people, preferably who have been to a DrupalCamp before and know what to expect
Morning - short introduction, quickly schedule 1 room of advanaced sessions for people who want the advanced sessions.
All Day - Code sprint room, where people can work on organized-in-advance projects or their own stuff.
1 Sessions room - as needed.
Sunday - Anyone who wants to show up (120 person cap)
Morning, Explanation of a 'camp' - introductions if we want, schedule 3-4 rooms full of sessions.
Code room still available as alternative to sessions.

agreeing
sorry if it sounded confrontational, I was agreeing with you.
i think this is perfect...
sorry if i'm a bit late to the game, but i'm finally taking a few mins out of my own personal Drupal 6 crash course...
as one of the organizers of the first and second drupal camp, i think sam knows the environment well enough to know what can and can't happen. historically we've had one hacker room and a bunch of concurrent sessions. if poly is limiting what rooms we can use, then this makes sense.
too boot, it seemed like there was always a 1/3 attrition on the second day. so placing the focus on the second day shouldn't hurt. :)
Outstanding questions...
- registration location?
- sponsors for food?
As for the schedule, i would propose the following...
Saturday - Drupal or project hackers who want to sit in a room of really smart people and tinker away till their brains explode or problems are solved. if you've been to a devhouse, drupalcamp or a mashpit, you should be comfortable.
- Saturday Morning - short introductions and quickly schedule one room for advanced sessions.
- Saturday Rest of Day
-- Hacker Room, where people can work on projects or their own stuff.
-- a Session room, where people can hold organized / formal sessions on stuff. (no sales pitches)
Sunday - Open to all. from beginner to advanced drupal hacker. (120 cap)
- Saturday Morning - short introductions and quickly schedule rooms for sessions.
-- Hacker Room, where people can work on projects or their own stuff.
-- two / three rooms, where people can present their work &/or give presentations on stuff. (no sales pitches)

non php person?
I'm interested in coming up for the camp, but haven't been to one before, and I'm not sure how they work. I've been fiddling with Drupal for a while, wrote some documentation, contributed some CSS mods for the Nice Menus module... but I don't know PHP. Will I be a fish out of water? What sort of non-PHP-coder stuff goes on?
It might be cool just to hook up with area Drupallers, regardless.
yes!
I think you'll find most of the workshops are not aimed at php experts. Events like this help to strengthen the NYC Drupal community by fostering connections between developers and between developers and end-users.
The camp will be two days. The first day is the hardcore geek/php coders day. There will be rooms with people working on various projects and modules. There might also be a room the first day for new users and general quesitons, but the bulk of the un-conference will be on sunday.
You might want to think about coming for a brief time on saturday and checking things out and then come for the entire day sunday.
Decision made for Saturday?
On another note, if any of you are so inclined we will be working on Drupal issues being faced by the developing world at UNICEF on Friday and Saturday. This is part of a joint venture of Google, UNICEF, and One Laptop Per Child, and all are welcome, it should be a great time for a great cause.

Possible 4 hr 'intro to Drupal' session on Saturday?
I was thinking of doing a 4 - 6 hr "Intro to Drupal" session on the Saturday - total immersion for people new to Drupal.
Chatting on IRC we realized there's potentially some problems with this:
Saturday's meant to be just an 'advanced' day - having a beginners session might be confusing
There's no 'meet & greet' on Saturday due to not having the large room
I (Thomas Turnbull) work for a non-profit that uses Drupal a lot (http://www.greenmap.org), and I need to train up the staff there in the basics of Drupal. So I have a guaranteed audience of four, but would like to make this more valuable by opening it up to a wider audience. There are a lot of non-profits in New York who use or are thinking of using Drupal, and this would be a great way for them to get to grips with it, and begin to understand its power. I feel that this would also allow people new to Drupal to get a lot more out of the Sunday of the Drupal Camp as the Sunday sessions are more focussed on the slightly more advanced stuff.
I see this session covering:
Depending on time and interest I could also cover an intro to theming and module building, but I think these would be better left to individual Sunday sessions.
Tresler has said that he could still do a short introductory session on Sunday for people that couldn't come on the Saturday.
So - what do you think? Should I do this? Do you think people would be interested? Do you think it would be valuable for the Drupal Camp? Or would it be better done another time and place? Anyone interested in helping out if I go ahead with this?

right on! thanks.
Thomas,
thanks for doing this. I think it will be a great addition to the event.
What time on Saturday for this session, Thomas?
Thanks, Jim

10.30
Aiming for 10.30.
Day starts at 10 with bagels & coffee. Usually this is in the main room but as that room's not available on Saturday we'll go straight to one of the smaller rooms.

Very valuable!
Thomas,
This would be extremely valuable for myself and a few friends who have expressed an interest in getting off the ground with Drupal. I think you can count on two or maybe three of us strongly wanting to attend the session.
I also think Saturday would be a great day for it. It won't overlap with the advanced sessions, but will instead provide a reason for newbies to come that day, as well as prepare them for Sunday's sessions.
Thanks,
Ben
I agree
While I have done a few sites already and generally feel I have a good grasp on "the Drupal way", I have some nagging concerns that I am missing some things - especially regarding menus and users (and their lack of node-ship).
I also agree in terms of the bifurcation of skill sets.
Thanks!
Great to get some positive responses.
I've created a signup sheet for those interested at http://barcamp.org/DrupalCampNYC4IntroToDrupal
I'm planning to base this in Drupal 5 - as I've not used 6 extensively yet. Does anyone feel strongly that I should do it in Drupal 6?
Capellic - although I hope you could get a few useful tips from this beginners session, I think you're probably already beyond the level I'm aiming at! The various ways of 'doing' users in Drupal may be a good session to suggest for Sunday. You're welcome to come along though, and it would be great to have your help in guiding other people at the session through the setup process.
Cheers,
Thomas

Google Summer of Code 2008
Wondering if there are people interested in discussing projects and mentorship guidance for the upcoming Google Summer of code at the DrupalCampNYC.
the drupal group is here: http://groups.drupal.org/soc-2008
I have submitted a project which is on the drupal Gsoc acceptance list: http://groups.drupal.org/node/9784
I would love to talk to people who are involved in GSoc this year. Plus, those who were involved in GSoc in the past can share some of their experience and knowledge.

Ideas for sessions
I'm not sure where to put this on the wiki but a colleague and I had some ideas for things we'd like to hear about but don't know much about ourselves (which is why we want to hear about them!). Maybe this will inspire some expert?
--Packaging themes to share with others. We are developing a theme with a layout that might be of interest to others, but it involves some custom CCK and Views stuff, so how would we put that all together to share?
--Setting up editorial workflows in Drupal. We've taken a stab at this with Views and Roles, but it would be nice to hear about someone who's using it on a live site.
--How to move a site from a development environment to the live server, or just generally best practices in upgrading a site to Drupal. We're doing a pilot site from scratch but when we do our main site it will have to take place in the background.
See you this weekend.
editorial workflows
I will be interested in seeing examples of setting up editorial workflows in Drupal. Esp. from the perspective where data is automatically being pulled into the system by talking to an API and then editor can pick and choose the things they want to publish.
added
I added them to the wiki at http://barcamp.org/DrupalCampNYC4Sessions
hopefully we can get someone to run these sessions when we make the schedule on sunday morning
