Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • Wysiwyg - melissamcewen
    • Conference Organizing Distribution - ezra-g
  • Reverse Node Reference View demo (15 to 20 min) - wildfeed
  • QueryPath and XSLT (30 min) - mcaudy
  • Site Re-Design/Theming example (20 min) - orbgasm
  • China, Technology, Opportunity (15 to 30) - skyredwang
  • Drupal Security Review (10 min) - Coltrane
  • Drupal Drinks and Drupal Fun at Dakota Roadhouse
  • Newbie Birds of a Feather - johnvsc
  • BOF: Group Leadership Discussion

Signup closes midnight of the day before the event. We don't have the luxury to add "last minute" attendees.

Remember: You must have your REAL NAME on your groups.drupal.org profile otherwise you will not be able to get in to 7 World Trade Center!

Lightning presentation on modules?

tom_o_t's picture

Robbie made a great suggestion yesterday, that we add a new section to our monthly meetups - a lightning round of modules. Each week three(?) people do a five minute presentation on a module, each followed by a 5 minutes Q&A.

This would hopefully be interesting to both people new to Drupal and those who have been at it longer - new people learn about different things that Drupal is capable of, and other people learn about modules that they perhaps haven't had a chance to explore. Hopefully the five minute format would encourage more people to present too.

Thoughts?

This sounds awesome! I think

Melissamcewen's picture

This sounds awesome! I think it would really be a big draw. People would be able to practice public speaking and learn about new things to adopt— maybe it doesn't have to be a module, just anything about Drupal.

My initial thought was that

robbiethegeek's picture

My initial thought was that we try frequently to tell people that they need to choose good modules, and that there are already established patterns for solving issues. But when it comes to something as simple as adding images to posts (in D6) someone would have to divine that the standard solution is to install Filefield, Imagefield, Imagecache & Image API (Isn't it obvious that this is the best practice LOL). So that is why I would like to see it focus on modules and solutions, since one of the first rabbit holes most people coming to Drupal or coming to a new problem they haven't tackled before is to look at the existing stack of solutions that already exist and evaluate the correct modules / approach for their situation.

Robbie

Right

winston's picture

So I updated the description of the new "lighting rounds" on the event.

And looking at Coltrane's proposal it doesn't quite fit that category. Any thoughts on that? I'm thinking Coltrane's proposed topic should definitely be on the agenda, but perhaps it isn't a fit for this initial concept.

Added "lightning rounds" to the agenda

With a brief description of this "new feature" of our meetup.

Let's here those "lighting round" ideas...

This is a brilliant idea. +1

This is a great idea!

kbell's picture

To join the choir, two thumbs up on this idea!

It might be really cool, when there are competing methodologies/approaches (for instance, TinyMCE vs FCKEditor for rich text editors, or JQuery Media + Filefield vs for media presentation, or Dashboard vs HomeBox for user dashboards), if there could be a very quick overview of why one approach and not the other, or a brief pros/cons comparison?

There are so often compelling reasons why one is better, but these reasons are not always obvious, and often have to do with such relative ephemera as future upgrade path reliability, overall community-savviness of the maintainers, or ongoing corporate sponsorship of the module, which often allows maintainers to spend more "quality time" working on the module. These kinds of considerations are passed on by word of mouth often, and are in no way obvious from a technical standpoint, or from just reading the Description on the module's d.o. page. Anyway - just a thought. Might be too hard from an organizational standpoint

No matter what, this is an exciting idea, and I can't wait to see it in action on Nov 3. Thank you, Winston and Robbie, for bringing this great idea to the group!

create a block view using Reverse Node Reference

wildfeed's picture

Would like to do a demo showing how to create a block view using Reverse Node Reference and getting it to appear when displaying the referred node. Extremely powerful and pretty easy to accomplish when you understand the process.

Thanks wildfeed - added

winston's picture

I actually added it from the last one already.

Thanks...

Looking forward to this.

I'm working on a new module

bleen's picture

I'm working on a new module for Apple Push Notification Service ... it does some fun things with services. Assuming it - ya know - works by then, I'd like to give a quick tour of it.

Added Apple Push Notification integration

winston's picture

Added Apple Push Notification integration to the agenda as tentative.

Let me know when you are sure about it and I'll take out the "tentative" ;)

When you present, if

skyredwang's picture

When you present, if possible, please compare your module with Prowl push notifications http://drupal.org/project/prowl

just as an FYI we are using

bleen's picture

just as an FYI we are using easyAPNS instead of prowl and the (horrific) module we ended up with simply integrated easyAPNS with drupal. It's not pretty

Status on this

winston's picture

What's the status on this preso? Still thinking November? How long do you think you'll need?

I take it back ... the code

bleen's picture

I take it back ... the code got so ugly that I wouldn't want to show it in public :)

Fair enough - took it off

winston's picture

Feel free to propose something for next month...

mcaudy's picture

I will need a full half-hour to do the QueryPath and XSLT demo

So, I request that we not add any more topics to the list.

Also, others who are already listed to give presentations should indicate how much time they are going to need, and plan their presentations accordingly.

to present

China, Technology and Opportunity

skyredwang's picture

I joined the DrupalNYC community 2 years ago. Since then, the community helped me to grow as a Drupaler, and I learned a lot about Drupal from many people, made a lot of friends and also presented a few times. But I have made my plan that I will leave NYC in early January.2011. Before then, there is November and December meetups; and I'd like to present 2 last topics that I am really passionate about, and which I would consider the presentation could be a little unique contribution. The topic for this coming meetup is
"China, Technology and Opportunity". I can do a 15 - 30 minutes presentation depending on how much time we have. I also realize this topic might not interest many people, so please vote to indicate.

+1 ... would like to hear

Drupal Architect?

timham59's picture

I just received a message that said "I'm definitely interested in this". It appears to have come directly to me rather than the group at large. I could be wrong because I am still getting used to the format of the group posts. At any rate, I posted a job opening for a Drupal Architect and I am wondering that's what you are interested in. If not, I apologize. If so, please forward a Word format resume to my office email address which is thammack@edgets.com. Thanks.

This sounds very interesting,

bhorst's picture

This sounds very interesting, as I'm also embarking on a China project. In fact, I'd be happy to speak with you about our projects in more detail afterward if you're available.

For some reason my full name is not showing up

brandorr's picture

I have it filled in for my drupal.org master profile.. not sure why it's not pulling it down. In any case it's Brian Gupta.

now fixed

greggles's picture

Up until last week there were a variety of bugs that were causing the whole "pulling it down" to not work - both configuration of drupal.org (and g.d.o) and bugs in bakery. Thanks to our work on the DrupalCon Chicago site I was able to fix those and the code was deployed last Friday :)

I edited your account on the master and it populated the full name field here on g.d.o. Yay!

My Full Name still not showing up on Signups list.

brandorr's picture

Do I need to do anything to refresh? Thanks, Brian

You have to do it on groups.drupal.org

winston's picture

It's odd. When you go to your gdo user page it suggests that you should go to drupal.org to change it, but that is not true.

Don't click the link to go to drupal.org. Look for a tab that allows you to edit it here on groups.drupal.org.

Thanks!

Ooops, replied to fast

winston's picture

Didn't see greggles message - sorry.

Drupal Security Report

coltrane's picture

I could present on the Drupal Security Report, what we found from analyzing Security Advisories and what it means. The presentation will take the suggested amount of time of 5 minutes. http://drupalsecurityreport.org

See above discussion...

winston's picture

...for what we are looking for for these new "lighting rounds".

With that in mind I added your security report to the regular agenda as whether it is "lightning round" or not I'm sure it will be of interest.

I'm guilty of scanning, must

coltrane's picture

I'm guilty of scanning, must admit it, my apologies for not reading the whole paragraph and seeing that these are to be "a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together". Feel free to replace my proposal with a more appropriate one.

Looking forward to China, Technology and Opportunity

Contributing to Drupal

johnvsc's picture

I would like to see a BoF table that goes over contributing to the Drupal Project -> even though we are moving to GIT (I think) there are alot of questions that I still have concerning CVS and how to contribute to the community.

I thought about creating a flow chart that compare SVN, CVS and GIT -> but I would need someone with serious intimacy with all three to assist me in building one -> once I can picture it, and then create it, i think that this would help ALOT of people.

Anyone, Anyone?

Yeah, I'm a new maintainer

Melissamcewen's picture

Yeah, I'm a new maintainer and I'd loooove some CVS pointers

CVS Guide for module maintainers

ezra-g's picture

I think that understanding revision control in general and how to use CVS is more important for being able to contribute to Drupal (at least initially) than understanding how all of those revision control systems differ. Have you seen the CVS Reference guide for module maintainers?

Yes, I have seen that

Melissamcewen's picture

Yes, I have seen that reference guide and I use SVN/GIT every day, but CVS is a bit different.

Actually, maybe I'll just wait for d.o to migrate to GIT before I contribute. Probably easier :P

I'm In

I'd be interested in talking about contributing to the community!

Hi Everyone,

I am a new Drupal user and I think most of the presentations will be over my head, but I would love to join since none of my friends understand my Drupal obsession. Is that ok?

bienvenewbie

lp's picture

There are a variety of skill levels present at meetups.. You will likely not be alone in yr newness, and are definately welcome.

cool

Pistachio Pony's picture

Looking forward to it and thanks for the welcome!

Newbie Birds of a Feather

winston's picture

We invariably have a birds of a feather session for new folks (usually led by the inestimable johnvsc). No worries, newbies are always welcome. Also our new "lightning round" sessions are designed to be friendly to new folks.

the Drupal n00bie BoF will be there!

johnvsc's picture

come with your questions and get an answer!

Would you be willing to do a Stylizer session sometime?

wildfeed's picture

Stylizer 5.1 now rocks native on OS X and is geared up to perform some very sophisticated cross-platform CSS hacking. You did a session on Stylizer at the 1st D4D conference and now that Apple fanboys (and gals) can follow along, a refresher on some of the less obvious moves would be most welcome. We know you've got the chops, JZ!

Stylizer for the Mac works very well

johnvsc's picture

I have been using it on production sites and, by following some very basic guidelines, you can create cross browser compatible-ness very easily.

the pc version allows you to "work in" IE678 FF23 and Chrome -> however, on the mac you can only work in Chrome.

here is the site: http://www.skybound.ca

so, I can give a run through - it is pretty easy to get it running :)

Real names in profiles

tom_o_t's picture

Please check that your full name is in your user profile - we need it to give the attendee list to the venue.

Some people's names were lost during the recent work that was done on the d.o/g.d.o infrastructure.

This is seeming to be a

nikkiana's picture

This is seeming to be a little buggy, my name is set on d.o, and it looks like it's synched to g.d.o when I look at my profile, but it isn't showing up in the attendees list.

Just wanted to raise the red flag in case it's happening for others.

Try real name again...

tom_o_t's picture

@greggles took a look at this issue today, and turned off profile sync on GDO because it's being buggy. Issue is at http://drupal.org/node/932774

Try editing your profile on GDO and saving again.

Yep, that worked. Thanks!

...and of course I'll be out of town on November 3. Geez.

anyone ever thought about

patoshi's picture

anyone ever thought about recording these meetups and posting them up? there's alot of great knowledge and tips everytime... u guys mind if i bring in a tripod and record the sessions?

I think this should be explicit opt in

winston's picture

For example I'd rather not be recorded. But if someone presenting explicitly agrees to be recorded then I suppose that is up to them.

thats true not everyone would

patoshi's picture

thats true not everyone would want to get recorded. guess thats not an option. just thought it would be a great way to spread the knowledge for those that cant make it.

"China, Technology and Opportunity" is interesting...

EddieN120's picture

...alas I, too, will be out of town. Rats. :(

Any chance of this presentation (and others) being videoed? livestreamed? beamed directly to our brains? Please?

yea we can, but the only way

patoshi's picture

yea we can, but the only way i see we can do it is for those that wish not to be recorded they would have to announce it before they make a presentation. im still down for those that's in favor of it.

"explicit opt-in"

lp's picture

By "explicit opt-in", Winston meant that those who do not wish to be recorded don't have to say anything, & the person recording would have to ask.
It's not a huge burden for the shooter to bear.
I've worked this way for years when recording/documenting events. Asking often offers some insight into the presentation as well: how to shoot it, if there's prepared material to accompany, whether the presentation is still being developed/polished and not ready for recording, etc.

Reminder: Check now to make sure you are signed up

winston's picture

Reminder: Please check now to make sure you are signed up for the November meetup. Please check now at...

We had a lot of people "think" they were signed up when they were not. You must sign up every month.

Even if you just THINK you are coming, please sign up so we have your name on the security list.

Thanks...

I have to postpone my presentation.

mcaudy's picture

I have to postpone my presentation, due to recent family-related issues, which have required me to travel outside New York during the last two meetups.

I will plan to give the same basic presentation at the December meetup. However, I think I will package it somewhat different, and present it as "Data Mashups with Drupal". I gave a BoF on that topic at DrupalCon Copenhagen, which was well-attended and well-received. It also focused on QueryPath and XSLT, but the title is probably of more general interest.

I too will have to postpone

orbgasm's picture

I too will have to postpone my presentation, also due to some family-related issues. Once again, I will have to postpone my presentation to next month's meetup.
