Pegspace and KDI

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I'd encourage this group to keep tabs on the progress of the Knight Drupal Initiative group (http://groups.drupal.org/knight-drupal-initiative)

The development projects being undertaken by this group have a strong relation to the goals of the KDI, and are prime candidates for support of that initiative, but we need to stay plugged-in to the process. Deproduction has a strong (and growing) relationship with Knight and I would love to support any groups out there who want to apply for support from the KDI for Drupal development projects aimed at bolstering the PEG community.

Let's get it together...

Thanks for sparking the flame again about the Knight Drupal Initiative group, Tony. When many of us met at DrupalCon, we agreed to join that group and push forward to try and come together with a proposal for them. I think it's time we get moving on this. It appears there are a bunch of people in this group with grant-writing experience, so I would love to pull from all of your repositories to write our proposal.

I believe our ultimate goal is an install profile for peg centers. This install profile would contain the current peg modules in development, potentially some collaboration with the station module (which i think we are all excited about), the ability for up and coming peg modules to build in, and anything else we can get in there (a base PEG theme, etc). The second piece that I consider equally as important is some SERIOUS documentation. We should include this piece as it's something many modules lack, and especially with peg centers I think this is half the battle in getting folks on board. And there is also, of course, the point that we want to maintain this package through Drupal's evolution (and potentially back port to some extent).

We also discussed the need for this proposal/grant to have collaborative ownership. In other words, presented by the developers and owned by the developers. However, I am not in any way suggesting we don't need/want sponsorship by PEG centers or anyone else. We need both. But our goal is to benefit the drupal and peg communities as a whole.

I don't have a specific plan of how to move forward, but perhaps we need to figure out who of us are on board for this work. We may then want to discuss further via conference call and post meeting minutes back to this group. I know this is a lot to ask of all of us and I'm sure you are all sinking in as much work as I am --- but I think the best way for us to push forward on this is weekly calls and/or IRC until we can get a proposal submitted.

Let's get going sooner rather than later! Let me know who's on board, and by all means, comments please!

I'm with ya!

I agree that it would be good to put together a core group of people to champion the work and act as liaison to the other people who are working on valuable parts of the project, but may not have the time or interest to be active in the big picture stuff.

I like that you've set up the goal. I'm not sure if it would be good to broaden it to more of having a turnkey solution to PEGcenters; with a unified Profile being a key milestone. One of the lessons I learned from working with the DigitalBicycle was that the vision made a lot more sense to people than the tech pieces. Of course, we're mostly geeks here so I don't know if we want to find someone from outside the developer group to champion that larger vision and keep our work here on the nuts and bolts.

On that same sort of note, totally agree with you on documentation, documentation, documentation. Which definitely sets up a key question that a conference call would help work out: do we see the need for a central home for this? Maybe a wiki, or even something more like CVS?

Heck yeah, let's make some progress on this.

I'm on board. I'd like to pull this conversation as an rss feed to the ACM NewMedia site so we can cross contribute. Is that acceptable. - Keri Stokstad

I think that's a good idea,

I think that's a good idea, but can we wait until we have an initial conference call first so that we can set some terms and conditions and goals before we release to the masses :)

First Conference Call (Developers please attend!)

I'm going to go ahead and put out a date for the first conference call:

Wednesday April 9th at 3 PM EST

Hopefully we can get done what needs to be done initially in a 1 hour call.

It would be VERY ideal for all of the developers who were at DrupalCon to at least be present...definitely need all module contributors who want to be a part of this project to be on this call. Please comment back if you will be on the call; I'll set it up and get the info back out next week.

Sounds good for me

I can make that. Thank you so much for putting this together.

(also, I have a conference service we can use if you don't have one on hand)
