And who might you be?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

It would be great if everyone who signed up for this group would briefly introduce yourself here (who are you, where are you from, what do you do for a living, what's your background, etc) and share at least a little bit of what you do with Drupal (or hope to do with it).

I'll start:

Hello there, my name is Andrew Wheeland. I came to Rochester, NY for college in 1989 and haven't left since. I am now the Director of Interactive Services at WXXI Public Broadcasting, and before that was a Professor of Information Technology at RIT (specializing in courses to do with Web, Multimedia, and Human Factors/Interface Design). I'm also a big fan of Macs, Board Games, Facebook, and God (not necessarily in that order)

While not a coder at heart, I can poke around through the technical details pretty well and am currently working on implementing a Drupal-based website for WXXI. We are currently developing on a separate server, but have the site open for use while it develops. Bloggers are our chief residents at the moment. See: http://interactive.wxxi.org for a peek at where we are currently. Our migration plan includes a simultaneous presence for both sites under a similar graphic theme followed by a gradual migration of all data to Drupal and the eventual shut-down of the old site. Our current biggest challenge is going from great looking conceptual graphic design to functional theme.

My name is Pete Karl, and I came to Rochester in 2000 for college, and haven't left since :)

I'm a web developer at GateHouse Media, Inc., and we're using Drupal for niche sites and little one-off projects here and there. We'll probably post here and there w/examples of our work.

Oh, did I say we? My co-worker is Nick Sergeant, and I think he's posting a welcome message right now :)

Also, I blog: http://pkarl.com/blog

Nick Sergeant, Another Web Developer

nicksergeant's picture

Hey guys, Nick Sergeant here. I'm a native Canandaiguian down there in the Finger Lakes region. Currently residing in Webster, also working for GateHouse Media with that Pete guy above :).

I blog, too: http://nicksergeant.com

So I've used Drupal for quite a few things since I first discovered it about 7-8 months ago. Actually, scratch that, I discovered Drupal a couple years ago. However, my first look at it a couple years ago resulted in me saying "I'd rather write my own CMS". That was the stupid me.

About 7-8 months ago, however, we (GateHouse Media, collectively) started taking a closer look at Drupal. We decided to put forth efforts to build all of our special projects with Drupal.

So I read half of the Pro Drupal book and started building stuff. I did up http://bellascena.com with a Drupal backend as a personal project, and put together a multi-person blogging installation profile to be used to launch blog communities at the flip of a switch.

Currently, we're working on a few Drupal related projects, with one slated to launch early next month.

First a huge thank you to Andrew for setting up this group! This has been on my ToDo list since DrupalCon2008 in Boston. As usual things get "stuck" in the ToDo list.

I run a company that provides online services to scouting (Boy Scout, Cub Scout, Girl Scout) units. We have been in business for almost 2 years. After extensive testing of various open source CMS platforms, we selected Drupal primarily for its mulit-site hosting capabilities. We have developed custom modules, hacked core (say it isn't so), badly developed themes, and done alot of performance tuning.

I am a transplant from Syracuse, have worked in Xerox management, and run a small software company locally. I love getting back to programming and using my business skills to run a small business.

OPL Researcher

I work at RIT's Open Publishing Lab, a group which is developing interesting and innovative technologies which relate to print media. The lab's website, of course Drupal based, is http://opl.rit.edu/

I am currently involved in two projects with the lab, both of which involve Drupal. The first is, as I have mentioned, the Lab's website. The other project which I contribute to is "Innovation News". When completed, Innovation News will be a rapidly-produced, web-driven newspaper which will be utilized at RIT's Imagine RIT innovation festival. Writers covering the event will be able to easily publish their work using Drupal's interface. The data which they contribute will be taken from the website and (in a mostly-automated process) be printed and distributed in real time at the event. We are also looking into expanding this project to allow for mobile submissions and user-contributed content.

Both websites run Drupal 6 and make use of the many great themes and modules which have been contributed to the Drupal project.

Very cool!

I'm Chris Sternal-Johnson, Custom Development Analyst at the Democrat and Chronicle. We're using Drupal for a variety of internal and external projects (of which RocLoop is probably the most obvious thus far).

Glad to see a Rochester-area Drupal group getting up and running.

I play one at RIT... or rather employ them at RIT

I'm one of the Directors of RIT's Open Publishing Lab -- where John works. I've also had the chance to work with Chris during some research at the D&C. And I know Andy from years back.

I'm a huge fan of Drupal and very interested in sharing some of the work we're (and by we I'm mean John and our other developers) doing here at RIT. John's done a great job of describing our most exciting Drupal project. We're also using it to create a Guide for Self Publishing.

I look forward to participating with the community! Thanks again for setting this up Andy.

Hi folks.
I'm a freelance web developer based in Rochester. I've become a big fan of Drupal in the past year or two, and have put up a handful of small sites for local businesses and organizations. I have yet to take on any hardcore drupal programming, so far I've been able to accomplish every I need to with existing modules.

I'm eager to learn more and connect with other drupalers in the area. Thanks Andy for taking this first step.

cheers,

Hello all, I'm glad I came across this today.

I'm a library technologies specialist with the Genesee Valley BOCES in Le Roy, NY but live in Rochester. Although I am trained as a K-12 library media specialist, I now find myself in a position of spending much of my time developing websites with Drupal. I have been using Drupal since 4.5 and have learned to code from dissecting the code in Drupal. Recently I finished a Library Technologies Report, with Christopher Harris (schoolof.info/) about using Drupal as a platform for library websites. As well, I have recently started maintaining a couple library-specific modules for Drupal: marc and isbn.

A couple of our websites (theming is not our strength):
http://sls.gvboces.org
http://fish4info.org

I'm looking forward to meeting up with local Drupal users.

I'd feel guilty if I didn't introduce myself, since I've joined the group, even though I'm not in the Rochester area at the moment. I grew up in Rochester, but I'm living in Wichita, Kansas now (long story, grad school, married now, etc). I still have family and friends in the area, and I thought I'd keep a finger on the pulse there just in case local events coincide with a visit.

Currently I'm working for a company called ESSDACK (Educational Services and Staff Development Association of Central Kansas) building sites like crazy using Drupal. The majority of the work I'm doing focuses on educational agencies -- a lot of work with small school districts that need inexpensive but highly functional web sites, educational agencies, professional learning communities, and so on.

WNY?

If this is really a WNY group, can we move it / rename it to the WNY group?

Bill Gavett, University of Rochester

Hello All,

I just found this group, so I thought I would add to this discussion after joining. I work in the Rush Rhees Library and we are currently doing a website refresh with Drupal as our back-end. I have been working with Drupal since November, and have been very happy with it.

I also have a personal website at http://www.sitemech.com.

Generalized Web Geek in Rochester

escoles's picture

I'm the technological bottle-washer for a small Pittsford-based marketing firm, trying to drag our website production kicking and screaming into the content managed era. So far I've managed to get one Drupal 4.7 client site out the door (http://thrivebook.com/) and am working on a second (Drupal 5 this time) for a local engineering firm. With luck and reusable code/procedures, I will be able to move forward and do still more. I expect to have our company site on Drupal (hopefully version 6) by sometime this Fall.

I also manage the website for the Rochester Speculative Fiction Association (R-SPEC), which is on Drupal 5. Nothing really special in the site yet. Cobbler's children, and all that rubbish.

I've got four other Drupal sites out there -- two personal sites of my own (one each 4.7 and 5) and one belonging to my wife (4.7), and the fourth a private Drupal 5 site I use in conjunction with the Firefox Scribefire extension as a substitute of sorts for Google Notebook.

I'm not a very hardcore coder by any means -- more of a presentation layer geek -- but I can hack themes alright and have blue sky plans for a module I want to implement. (Sort of an open email obfuscation platform. Only a vague idea how it would work so far.)

Nice to see you again Nick.

New to Drupal

sComm's picture

Greetings, I"m new to Drupal (but long time Joomla expert). I have a new job and part of the job is to maintain the website created in Drupal. I have another challenge - I'm Deaf. I've looked at some Drupal videos and they're more talking than showing so it's a challenge for me to learn quickly. So I'm open to recommendations (videos, books, blogs, websites) to learn Drupal quickly before I ask my boss for permission to outsource to Indians.

I hope there will be a meeting soon so maybe someone locally can show me the ropes, or offer suggestions on my company's website.

Many thanks,
JSG

Hi, I'm actually an analog circuit designer and I do web development for fun as a hobby. I'm working on a couple of sites for friends and myself. I may be interested in some part time Drupal work in the future.

Can we setup a meeting according to the poll results? IMHO, we won't get everyone for the first meeting, but it doesn't matter anyway because everyone can eventually make subsequent meetings.

JSG, Here's my 2 cents on your question:

Lullabot.com is a good place for tutorials. A great place to find cutting edge info and fresh tutorials is drupal.org/planet. This is a news aggregator of drupal sites. I have read only one book, but it was excellent. Pro drupal development. Geared towards programmers, but the book helps you understand drupal by great insights into how it works internally.

Interactive Developer OPL

Hi, my name is Alvin Crespo. I am a fourth year New Media Interactive Development major at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I am currently working for the Open Publishing Lab headed by Patricia Albanese and Matthew Bernius. I am currently working on the Open Publishing Guide website powered by our favorite CMS - Drupal!

This is my first time touching Drupal, and have taken some training with Lynda.com and have taken a few tutorials here and there. It seems daunting at first, but I'm sure Ill grasp the true power of this CMS once I get my hands dirty.

I hope to gain much knowledge in web development in general from the Drupal Community and hope that I could contribute the same or even more to help out others with issues or road blocks that others will encounter.

I am a High school teacher (Chemistry/Physics) and an amateur astronomer. The Astronomy club has an existing web site that needs to be re-written, which I hope to do in Drupal. I was a software developer for many years before switching careers, so coding is not a problem.

I have been very frustrated with the lack of documentation, in particular with Panels and Views (seems like these should be core!).

I am interested in meeting other users, and learning about their usage patterns and tools, and learning how to use things in Drupal.

I'm diving into Drupal to expand my skill set. I was a web monkey/print designer back in the 90's (like Eric I can probably hack some themes- although I'm dipping my toe into coding with Python). My most recent metamorphosis earned me an MLS in Library Studies from UB (waves to Chris). While there I conquered Greenstone which, arguably, has less documentation than Drupal. I have learned the value of user groups!

I'd love to hear from Buffalo area folks interested in face-to-face show and tell. It's also the first time I heard of the OPL. I'm at the site as I type and I'm fascinated. I vote for meetings there! Is there a poll for that (I've only been here a few minutes...)?

Librarian, Batgirl Style

out of my league...

mtpaper's picture

Hi folks -

I have lived in Brighton since 2000. I crunch numbers and maintain databases for producers of Broadway shows....

My 'claim to fame' is that back in the late 1970s, I was the first to introduce computers to the producers and general managers....

My goal, with Drupal, is to push the theatre offices forward in their use of technology. I imagine a site for producers and managers to use - some info is open and shared for all of them (such as a forum where they can discuss problems they encountered at specific road venues), but then private sections for each particular office:

  • structured databases (ie, when did ShowX play Boston, and who were the stars and how much did we make)
  • centralized calendar for managing their staff (ie, Set Designer Y cannot be in Japan on April 3rd for Show 1 because he's still in London for Show 2)
  • document management (how many musicians do we need for Show #10, license agreements, actor contracts, etc)
  • tools (currency exchange widget)

So, I guess it's a hybrid of internet and intranet, but I don't really know what I'm talking about or if it's possible for me to create this or if I need to hire someone....
