Multicurrency

Hi

Back in 2005 we commissioned a multicurrency module to allow for products in ecommerce to be made available in multiple currencies, GBP, USD, Euro and ROW (Rest of World) Euro.

This module was created for Drupal 4.6 and we need to now have this module updated for Drupal 4.7.

An example of the module can be seen here

http://metamute.org

The module sets its currency by the admin creating a product and adding the currecncies manually as well as delivery charges in multicurrency manually, the currency a user sees a product in is set by the user inputting their country location.

What we'd like out of the new module is that its currency is set by reading the users geoIP address

It doesnt stop there, what we'd like to do is also have this module running in Drupal 5

We have a budget available for this type of commission

4.7 is very old

drew reece's picture

Drupal is currently promoting version 6.2 as the latest stable release, 4.7 is very old now. You should consider if you can upgrade to Drupal 5.7 or Drupal 6. Ecommerce is not available for 6.2 yet so 5.7 may be the safest option unless you can update in a few months when EC4 gets released.

I suspect most Drupal developers will be working on either 5.7 or 6.2 code, so you may have trouble finding someone to code for 4.7.

The ECommerce project page also states the 4.7 wont be supported after the version for 6 comes out, meaning you won't get any security / bug fix updates to 4.7 either.

Drupal versions

Hi Drew,

Thanks for this information on version numbers.

We will be moving to Drupal 6.x when Ecommerce and CCK/Views are available.

In the meantime we need to take our site through an upgrade path and for us that means 4.6 (where we are now) to 4.7, and then 5.x

We wont be in 4.7 for long but well need to be there for a few months.

Anyhows, any pointers for developers would be appreciated

Hiya,

Im still trying to get multicurrency to work across ALL the current versions of Drupal or well any version for that matter. Im gonna go off and see if anyone on the ecommerce discussion list or Drupal.org site as well as the UK Drupal user site is interested in this issue.

Ill report back when i get some success

Experience

Hi,

My experience:

Drupal doesn't handle multicurrency well. I set up a system using currency rates which used a daily feed plus a component that let the user know the equivalent quoted in the rate of their currencies. But payment through Paypal was always in GBP.

That was for 4.7. When we upgraded to 5 we decided my customer decided that we hadn't had enough worldwide sale to warrant upgrading the component.

And while I'm here, for people in the UK: I have a Royalmail shipping module which someone asked me to build, but then didn't use. I'm it took a couple of working days to wade through the ridiculous rates system, so I'm looking for a sponsor for this module so that I can release it to the world.

Hi

I just picked up on your post, i'd be really interested in sponsoring the royal mail shipping module and talking further about multicurrency development.

We now have our independent media site running and really need n\both of these features in place ASAP. The site is http://moreismore.net

All best

Beginning development

johngriffin's picture

Hi all,

I'm beginning development work today on adding multi-currency support to e-commerce for Drupal 5. Anyone who is interested in this feature is welcome to contact me as I am keen to make my code available to the community.

We will not be developing a fully featured multicurrency module, but rather something which meets out needs, namely:

  • ability to add prices in different currencies to products, no automatic currency conversion
  • correct currency will be displayed based on geoIP
  • the currency that is displayed is the currency that will be sent to the payment processor (which we are also developing - Realex)

We are doing some other quite specific hacking of the e-commerce module so I don't think that we will be able to make our code available in a clean module format, however I'd be happy to talk to anyone who is doing similar work and would like to share information.

Cheers,

John

Hi all,
Just wondering how the Royal mail module side of this is developing if at all. Currently I have a project I'm working on the that this would suite.
Cheers,
