Hello Peeps,

I found a perfect sample of what the front page for OSN should look like.

Have a look and let's know what you think. We would need to a graphic artiste to do the design.

Yeah. I like that too. But we can for now make use of garland. Just to keep things going - like get the contents up as well as the goals and objective of the initiative. With time, I hope designers will show up.

Like that too, but please NOT Garland!

aniediudo's picture

Please NOT Garland. The proposed look & feel of the site suggested by @murpheus works for me. Let's look at another well-architected, documented theme such as Acquia Marina or Prosper or any Fusion- or Zen-based theme. We can also start discussing the primary purpose of the OSF site as this will also help in determining an appropriate theme for the site.

I concur. No Garland. It's hard for me to take any site that has that Garland theme seriously. It's too plug & play. There are other free themes that can be installed to start for now.

Blackout, Blix and Acquia Slate are great temp themes as well.

Contents

I've started uploading contents, you might want to check it out. By the way guys, in what ways do you think you can help with putting the themes and contents together?

Initial Content

aniediudo's picture

Nice informative content so far on the OSFN website. I'm still digesting the content I'm seeing on the OSFN website, but I'd like to add that we review the layout & content of other open source community projects such as http://opensource.com (which was also built with Drupal). I'll update this comment later, but for now, good work so far.

Hi Excalubur.

The Open Source Foundation, Nigeria is a not-for-profit organization founded to improve use of technology tools by setting standards, providing on-going training & re-training, engaging in Research & Technology innovations and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open source community with the sole aim of achieving economic development.

You can learn more at: http://osf.org.ng/about_us

It is a brave endeavor.

The discussion that they are having is about how to make the user interface in their site.

By the way, I am Daniel I am collaborating with some of its members.

Hey Dan, Thanks for

Hey Dan,
Thanks for explaining that. Sounds like an interesting project. I look forward to it

some selection of the best themes?

ClearXS's picture

Hi, I've done a selection of all available 'regular' Drupal themes up till a few months ago. Of-course criteria can be different for you, but my selection contains many of the best.
wiki: http://wi-ca.org/All_themes
files: http://all.drumi.org/themes/
download: http://get.drumi.org/themes.tar.bz2 (probably update the download tomorrow)
=> extract in yoursite/sites/all/themes/ folder & try them out...

For Drupal 7 there are a few themes that don't exist for Drupal 6, but haven't researched them as I'm planning to use D6 until next year.

OSF vs OSN vs OSFN???

aniediudo's picture

Brand identity consistency is very important. I feel we should be clear about what abbreviation we use to address ourselves. I still strongly suggest that our primary domain name should have been opensource.org.ng. Even a layman would have been able to figure that it stands for a Nigerian organization committed to Open Source. Search engines & human brains would also find that very friendly. @Excalibur's comments & @Daniel's reply may not even have been necessary.
Finally, I would propose that we all edit our comments as well as the Title of this post when we agree on our acronym/abbreviation for the Open Source Foundation, Nigeria.

drecute's picture

Excalibur, here is a working business plan about Open Source Nigeria. The idea was carved out from this discussion.

At the moment, we want to grow the content, agree on goals and objectives, set terms before we can then begin the site development. Please feel free to share your thoughts and contribution.

Kind regards

Hello guys, Work is already

murpheus's picture

Hello guys,

Work is already ongoing on the OSFN website and as such your input would be highly required to make it a success

@Chillpill, we would have loved to buy that same domain name but then name was already as at the time we were looking for a name.

remarks in general for an open source org

ClearXS's picture

Hi, I think it's important to have a clear org which objective is to spread(/contribute to) the open source software, period.

It's not a business plan to contribute to the economy, making open source for business.
Neither is it to be meant as a social and democratic networking tool (only).

As open source tools (& drupal) are used for both, but can -& often are- of conflicting interest, an open source org should be build as a neutral place, just to spread the basic goals of open source.

None of this excludes organizations, social movements nor commercial companies; even not those counter-playing democracy or social activism, nor those criticizing commercial companies. One should differentiate such objectives from a basic open source org (like separate orgs, companies, private or personal initiatives, etc.).

An open source org should be organized as an org, to my opinion that the management should represent no only the group ideas&goals of an organization, but also have the objective and struggle that leadership is among different persons who are elected by it's members & based on qualities, open information and democratic processes. Of-course -as all is in the beginning here- I'm talking about future goals.
