Help write the D7 release announcement blurb on Accessibility

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

http://sandbox.stevekarsch.com/d7/announcement.html has a copy of the D7 release announcement. We need some help on the accessibility blurb. Could someone please comment with a suggestion at http://drupal.org/node/953314 ?

Deadline for our response: Jan. 2. Or maybe 3. But quick!

I have responded to webchick's call for help by giving a little more context and submitting this brief statement: "Drupal 7 is highly accessible itself and helps you create accessible websites, too. Our Accessibility Group is dedicated to making sure that continues to be the case."

They aren't asking for much more than that. In fact, they might want even less. And this really is for the most general of audiences. Understanding that, do you think we should say more?

And remember — they want it tomorrow. (Actually, they wanted it yesterday, but nobody pinged me about it until just now.)

my tweaks

Looks good to me. Under the time constraints, I would go with it. But here's how I would write it:

"Drupal 7 is highly accessible for content authors and website visitors. Our Accessibility Group ensures this and many contributed modules have a formal commitment to accessibility."

-- this mayhave the side effect of piqueing interest in the d7 accessible pledge for some authors.

I like it! But, being an editor...

John, I like that you mentioned specific audiences. But let's add one and make a more obvious connection to D7AX:

"Drupal 7 is highly accessible for webmasters, content authors, and website visitors. Our Accessibility Group guides the many Drupal developers who have pledged to make their contributed modules as accessible as possible."

Love it. I approve.

Thanks!

I took that last issue and put it forward on the press release issue queue.

Looks good. This is the kind

Looks good. This is the kind of thing that I am particularly bad at.

PR

I'm no good at earnest PR efforts either. Bojhan does't think that the web to accessibility group line is going to work though:

I wonder if we could put in something about best practices & making huge improvements in compliance?

Need to be sure video is accessible

Cliff's picture

Everett, can you check out the video on the mockup of the D7 announcement? I wonder if the controls are discoverable for you? And operable?

Bojhan wants "something actionable"

Read Bojhan's comment on our wording and my comment on theirs.

Time to brainstorm: In Drupal 7, what specific improvements have we made to Drupal in terms of accessibility?

If you're online right now (Jan 2, 2011, 15:58 UT), join Bojhan and me in a chat on Skype.

My latest proposal

Cliff's picture

Bojhan seems to have come around to our original position: That the two most important points are that D7 is an accessible (well, more accessible) tool and produces (more) accessible sites.

I feel it's also important to show our community support for accessibility. This is my latest shot:

Our community shares a commitment to accessibility. It shows: Drupal 7's administrative screens are more accessible than ever, and sites built with Drupal are highly accessible, too.

Bojhan's mulling it over and checking out how it looks in the layout.

My final stab at it

Cliff's picture

Drupal 7's administrative screens are more accessible than ever. Building accessible websites is easier with Drupal 7, too. Our commitment to accessibility guarantees this will always be true.

I guess we'll see what they come up with. Bojhan says this is likely to be featured for only a month or two, so it might be gone before we know it.

I've also suggested, since the Bluecheese theme has inadequate contrast in key color combinations, that they write another CSS for high contrast and link to that version and that they add a transcript for the video. Really, they need a hybrid of transcript and video description — the video shows one or two dozen well-known sites that are designed in Drupal.

But, back to my life on this, the last day of my break.
