Event type:
User group meeting

Let's get together, talk about our experiences with Drupal and plans for Drupal 7, and brainstorm on how to get DrupalPGH going again.

Here's a map to the Carnegie Office Park: http://maps.google.com/maps?near=800+North+Bell+Avenue,+Carnegie,+PA+151...

We'll be in Building 6 suite 280

Also listed at http://www.drupal7releaseparty.org/us/release-party-drupal-pittsburgh

Please sign up if going (or if you think you might go).

Forgot to mention: my company (CivicActions, http://www.civicactions.com/) will supply beer and other libations (and some munchies, too!).

See you there!

Getting the word out

fen's picture

Are any of you on Pitt/CMU/RMU/etc. tech boards that may have students or others interested in learning more about Drupal. With a new release out, this is a great time to start!

Cake?

fen's picture

Would someone like to get a Drupal cake for the party? I don't think I'll have time to pull that together, but if you're so inclined, email or contact me (or post here) and let me know what you have in mind (and cost). I don't think we'd need a big one, but it would be great to have the Drupal logo on it (and an "empowered by CivicActions" if we pay for it). I've got forks and plates ;)

Thanks!

Drupal 7 Release Party Start Time

vince@lacknergroup.com's picture

I'm flexible on the start time on Friday, if more people can make it early than late.

As things stand now, we're scheduled for 9:30 pm, but I could do 8:30 pm, or even 7 pm (which I just noticed is the usual start time, based on David Wheeler's recent e-mail).

No problem with bringing beer to the venue.

Just let me know!

Vince Lackner

Clarification on directions:

We're in Building 6, which is actually 800 North Bell Avenue.

From 79 North/South or Airport area:

1) Take Parkway West toward Pittsburgh
2) Take the Carnegie exit
3) Take your first LEFT
4) Travel 100 yards up steep hill to stop sign
5) Turn LEFT
6) Stay in left lane; follow signs toward Pittsburgh International Airport
7) Merge onto Parkway West
8) Travel 1 mile to Rosslyn Farms exit
9) Continue below…

From Pittsburgh:

A) Take the Rosslyn Farms exit (just beyond Carnegie) (6 miles from downtown)
B) Before the stop sign, turn left across the Parkway, as if you are heading back to Pittsburgh
C) Just before you would re-enter the Parkway, bear right up the hill (the large dark glass Salvation Army building will be above you on your right).
D) At the top of the hill (stop sign), turn right. This puts you onto a road that is essentially parallel to the Parkway Way going away from Pittsburgh.
E) Go about 300 yards straight up the hill to the very top (you will pass a "No exit" or comparable sign, and a sign for Building 6). Our building has a blue stripe around the middle.
F) Park in the upper parking lot.
G) Walk into lobby, turn left to far door, then turn right, walk about 30 feet into office.

Please speak up now

fen's picture

Thanks, Vince!

Please speak up now and let us know:
* if you'd like to come to the meetup
* what you'd prefer to drink ;)
* your preferred time
* if the location doesn't work for you (and if the Northshore would be better)

We only have 36 hours left to plan this, but we may be able to move to the North Shore (if the current location is a sticking point, and if @brucelet's offer stands for last-minute accommodations).

North Shore is easier for college students to reach

PghFreeNet's picture

North Shore is easier to reach by transit and on foot for local college and high school students and others without cars, especially at night when service is decreased. If we have a flier, maybe some people could post them at various schools in the area -- I can probably help with that. (Some high schools have web design classes.)

I can make it to either location, but NS is definitely a more central and more accessible location for more people to attend.

I'll only drink non-alcoholic, non-caffeine beverages, preferably not carbonated nor loaded with sugar.

Dave

Glad you can make it

fen's picture

Glad you can make it to either location. I agree that NorthShore is in general better, and something even closer to the Oakland area (in or around Pitt or CMU) might even be better.

For now, let's plan on VinceL's location in Carnegie for tomorrow (D7 release meetup) and maybe Brucelet's location next month.

Dave - would you like to bring (say) $20 or so of your favorite beverage to share? I'll trade you the receipt for a $20 ;)

Or else I can buy something while at Costco tomorrow...

Let me know!

Current list of likely drink possibilities

PghFreeNet's picture

I checked late last night on a list of potential beverage selections. If people have a preference, let me know and I'll make sure to get more of it than of something else. I may drop another or so that hasn't shown any popularity.

  • Cranberry juice cocktail
  • Cranberry - pomegranate (includes grape, apple, and plum juices)
  • Blueberry, pomegranate, concord grape
  • Mango (include apple and pear juices)
  • Cherry (includes apple, pear, grape)
  • White grape
  • Pina colada (includes apple, pineapple, coconut, and banana but tastes of pineapple and coconut)
  • Peach (they were out of so not sure what else it has, probably apple and grape, but I had it at a gathering in November and it tasted like one of those succulent tree ripened peaches one rarely finds today)

sugar free?

LizD's picture

anything sugar free?

cheese and crackers

fen's picture

Along with the beer, I'm going to bring some cheese and crackers.

Not sure if any of the drinks above are sugar free, but it sounds like they may be 'no sugar added' as fruit has much sugar.

How sugar-free do you need? Can you make suggestions?

(Vince: is there tea or coffee available at your office?)

Tea and Coffee both available in our office

vince@lacknergroup.com's picture

Yes, Fen. We can make both tea and coffee for the group.

Best,
Vince

beverages

PghFreeNet's picture

Except for the Cranberry cocktail, all the drinks I'll bring have no sugar added, but as Fen pointed out they do have natural sugars. If there will be hot water available for tea, I'll also bring a spicy ginger herbal tea and xylitol sweetner. I can bring unsweetened cranberry and cherry concentrates, too, which can be sweetned with the xylitol.

Carpool

linclark.research's picture

Could I possibly get a ride with someone... a year in Ireland has me a little too used to driving on the wrong side of the road. I can pick up soda if that's still needed, just let me know.

ride

PghFreeNet's picture

I can give a ride. I'll probably be in the city anyway. I'd need to know where you're located. I've enabled the direct contact form for my profile if you want to use that.

Awesome, thanks! Contact msg

linclark.research's picture

Awesome, thanks! Contact msg sent

Please someone pick up linclark

fen's picture

linclark started the PGH Drupal group and she deserves to be there!

I'm coming from the southwest and will be very tight on time (due to get home around 9pm from another trip) so it would be difficult for me without being rather late, but if no one else can pick you up, we'll just have to be late...

Please post if you can give her a ride. I believe she'll be somewhere near Pitt...

And if you could pick up some soda, that would be great! I don't think we'll need a lot, but remember to bring me a receipt ;-)

vince@lacknergroup.com's picture

It looks like we're meeting tonight at our place in Carnegie, correct?

Tentative head count (as best as I can determine):

Fen (but not early?)
Lin
PghFreeNet
Dave
Brucelet (but not late?)
Vince
others?

For our office:

When you walk in, you will see Suite 290 (our office) straight ahead (The Lackner Group, Inc.)

But we would be meeting in Suite 280 (same level, just down the hall to the left (until the end), then to the right (straight into the office). We'll put up signs.

I'm also not sure what time the group has agreed on. Sounds like 7 or 8 pm is too early for you (and Lin, if you represent her ride), and 9:30 pm is too late for Brucelet.

Everything else being equal, I have some preference for the later time (because of a 7 - 9 pm event that I was hoping to attend). But I'm flexible.

I have a projector, speakers, and a good blank wall space, so no problem running the on-line video.

What else do we need?

Best,
Vince Lackner

as far as time goes...

fen's picture

As far as time goes, I think we're still on for 9:30pm.

But it sounds like VinceL is more flexible, so if you want to show up earlier, that's fine with me, just check in with VinceL.

I just hope someone's still there at 9:30 as I won't be able to get there much earlier. (Maybe 9pm)

VinceL - I also assume you have WiFi?

I've got a fresh D7 on my laptop and watched webchick's video. My personal project is to update (making heavy use of the coder module) my little civicactions.module for D7.

Two other topics for discussion are:
* when should the monthly meetup be? (The first Wednesday of the month has been proposed)
* how can we get the word out, esp. to CS students at Pitt & CMU, but also the non-profit sector in Pgh?

Release Party: Starting Time 9:30 pm

vince@lacknergroup.com's picture

Thanks, Fen.

I'll make sure that the outside door is unlocked, and that the door to the inside office is also unlocked, for anyone who arrives before I do (which should be 9:15 pm or a few minutes later).

We'll also put up signs in the lobby.

Sorry, I missed some comments. Yes, I'd be happy to host the next meeting at our offices on the Northshore. If I make it tonight, we'll try to set a date.

Thanks. I had missed the Signups tab at the top.

For future reference, where would I find Joshua and Ralph's names? Perhaps there is another link that I am missing?

Missing the Party

LizD's picture

Sorry I signed up but am not there. I started out but my neighborhood doesn't get salted or plowed 'til last and after my third skid I headed back home. Decided maybe partying wasn't a good idea for me tonight. After 30 years in LA I'm not much of a winter driver yet! Hope you have a great time and hope to see you next month.

See you next one

fen's picture

Glad you took care of yourself!

Thanks (and a language link)

fen's picture

Thanks again to everyone who came - or even thought about coming!

We'll have another meeting next month (I'll open a new topic to discuss date and time).

And here's the link on Clojure that I talked briefly about last night: http://clojure.org/state - sweet! I can just imagine building web services that could utilize language features like that - wow!

Be seeing you!
