Event type:
User group meeting

The Drupal Ireland meetup 2008 will take place on Saturday 7th of June in Galway. All welcome. The venue can hold up to 30 or 40 people!

Venue

DERI: Digital Enterprise Research Institute, NUI, Galway.
Maps available at
http://useamap.com/deri
Wireless Internet access and projector available.

Travel

See map above for location.

  • If you're arriving at Ceannt Station on the Dublin train you can grab a cab pretty much outside the main entrance to the station. DERI is 3-4km from the station. (Maybe post here if you're using the train - could be opportunity to share a cab?)
  • Take the local bus #4 from Eyre Square to Newcastle (sometimes shows 4W for West). Get off at terminus and the driver should be able to point you to the IDA business park just across the road with traffic lights. Buses at 0940 and 1020 (timetable at: http://www.buseireann.ie/site/your_journey/printed_timetable_pdfs/city/g...) Bear in mind that buses here are unreliable and it could take long to reach DERI. The cab is probably a better option.
  • If you're arriving at the airport it's a cab journey in. DERI is in the Newcastle area - there's a pricing board outside the airport. Last time I did this journey it was about 25euros in a taxi.
  • If you live as close to the place as Alan and Vincent then walk! [or cycle]
  • If you get stuck somewhere ring one of the locals and one of us will come and get you. (phone numbers to be sent to the attendees closer to the day of the event)

Schedule

  • 11:00 Start
  • 11:00-11:15 Introductions and agenda.
  • 11:15 Presentations & discussion sessions (20-40 mins each).
  • 13:00 Lunch break

i'll be there

frost's picture

I could do something on one-to-many node relationships using CCK, View references and Views in 5.x.
I've done this on a site with course listings, where the course descriptions, dates, photo albums and participant diaries are all created as individual nodes, but when displaying the course description, the others are pulled in so that they all appear as a single node. (Here's an example).

I see there's wireless internet. Will there be PCs and/or projector available on the day or do I need to bring my laptop?

Great! there will be

scor's picture

Great! there will be projectors and a few laptops which you can use to demo your sites.

more details

frost's picture

I've just looked at this to see how I'll present this, and I realised that I will be covering other topics along the way.
So here is an updated list of the topics I plan to cover, starting from a clean install of 5.x:

CCK - basics of creating new content types
Using Node Reference fields & changing how they are displayed
Views - including page, block, filtering, sorting and arguments
View References

It might be a good idea for me to present after Heather's, since she's covering CCK and Views, probably in better detail than I intend to do.

I don't think I'll have time to put together anything on Node Profile this time, but I can demo the site that uses it and answer questions as best I can.

Drupal meeting

Hi,
Is it cool if I come along? I'm in UK at the moment, but will be in Dublin from Wednesday.

Regards

Sounds great

Limboman's picture

Hi all, I'd like to attend, if thats OK.
Will be Driving from Wicklow With my business partner "Frost" on friday afternoon. Room for one or two people if anyone would like to share.

Can we start at 11?

heather's picture

Thanks for sorting all this out!

Not sure how it is for others coming from as far as Wicklow, etc- but 10's maybe a bit early. Well, it is for me anyway. I don't have a car, so I have to take a bus from Sligo and the earliest possible one gets me to Galway at 10.45.

Any chance we could start at 11 then go til 4... Maybe take the edge off the Sat morning for those coming from far...

Just an idea. You don't have to start later because of me, heh, but just wondering how 10am suits other people?

Maybe we'll all be keen to leave at 3 if this nice weather keeps up!

Good point, since we will

scor's picture

Good point, since we will have some people coming from as far as the east cost and the UK, we could start at 11am! I updated the schedule. Others are welcome to come earlier and start chatting drupal (I booked the room from 10am).

Great idea Heather, I'm sure

tisjames's picture

Great idea Heather, I'm sure lots of people travelling from further afield will appreciate it. Am I allowed to say I appreciate it even if I just live 3 miles up the road from DERI? :)

@GrayMac and Limbo: you are

scor's picture

@GrayMac and Limbo: you are more than welcome, this event is free and open to anybody interested in Drupal.

*phew*

heather's picture

(breathtaking play by play) i can go :)

topics?

heather's picture

well now that i have confirmed i can come... i'm curious what kinds of topics will there be?

+1 for frost's related nodes example
i'm keen to see frost's one-to-many 'related notes' example. looks great!

+1 for node profile demo- any takers?
i'd also like to see someone demonstrate using the node profile module? (i use bio)
um... and any other complicated user stuff i guess.

i don't know if there's anything i could share specifically. maybe if other people post things they are keen on seeing?
i'd be glad to prepare or show something, if i am capable.

Is there any indication of

tisjames's picture

Is there any indication of the audience mix in terms of experience with Drupal? I'm a Drupal newbie having installed it after more than a year since my last dalliance (I'm moving a very small site from Joomla to Drupal at the moment) so I'm wary of suggesting topics that have limited value to the audience as a whole. Happy to get an idea of where things are going so I can think about where the site would evolve.

even if you're just starting

heather's picture

even if you're just starting out, you can show stuff too. you could show something about exporting data from joomla and importing into drupal? maybe just using two demo sites, dummy data? ( i don't use joomla, but i'd be interested in seeing how to move from one system into drupal.)

i'm still trying to think of what i'd share. i've been using drupal for a while, but i still feel like a noob. i can think of loads of things i'd like to see... i'd like to see someone build a simple 'hello world' module in drupal 6. or setting up your site to host its own openID... um... loads of stuff.

James, is there something I could show you? Just a demo for setting up a standard site with CCK+Views+ImageCache? (send me a link to your current Joomla site and I might get some ideas of stuff to demo). http://groups.drupal.org/user/11366/contact

@Heather: no problem, I can

scor's picture

@Heather: no problem, I can do the demo of the simple 'hello world' module in drupal 6!

Since I'm in the security team, I will also talk about security: why it matters, how to keep a Drupal site secure, how to write secure modules...

I'll throw in some semantic web stuff too - after all that's what DERI is all about ;)

Where to stay?

GrayMac's picture

My wife and I will be coming to Galway for the weekend. Can anybody recommend any reasonable B&B's or Guesthouses there, esp. if they're close to where we're meeting?

Thanks

The Westwood

is literally across the road from the venue.

Never stayed there myself, but I've had a few quiet pints there.

Heather, there wasn't enough

tisjames's picture

Heather, there wasn't enough data in the Joomla site (it's more or less a brochure for my brother's business) to justify writing a mapping script between Joomla and Drupal. That said, it wouldn't be overly difficult to do as the content is easy to grab from Joomla tables. So I might try to have a look at it as an exercise before the meetup (no promises!). Main motivator for switching is that introducing a simple Client Area to the site is far, far easier with Drupal using the access modules that can be added.

I'd be curious to hear about CCK as I keep seeing it mentioned but haven't had a chance to look at it.

ah no worries, don't go

heather's picture

ah no worries, don't go making something just to demo. i mean, i don't even use joomla, heh. was just trying to think of something you could show. i'm sure there is something better.

i will do a demo of setting up a custom content type using CCK, with custom fields and displaying it with views. that is FUN.

is anyone familiar with node_profile? i'd love to see a demo related to that.

node-profile

frost's picture

i've used that on one site. it was a while back but if i have time i'll try to refresh myself

directions?

frost's picture

any chance someone could post driving directions (limbo & I are coming from wicklow)

The best is probably to

scor's picture

The best is probably to follow the map: http://useamap.com/deri
Follow direction to Clifden N59. It'll be on your right: IDA business park in Dangan, across from the Westwood Hotel. It's the first building on the left after passing the gate of the business park.

directions

vjordan's picture

DERI is the building just under the "en" of clifden on the graphic. It's about 20mins from the first roundabout you meet at Oranmore, about 7k out from Galway city. Follow arrows on map as there's a no right turn which isn't obvious until quite late.

For a bigger picture and standard map view search for "galway business park, galway, ireland" in maps.yahoo.com

we're leaving in a little while, any chance of getting some people's contact details (mobiles etc)?

Someone asked for the

Someone asked for the example module from my presentation; here it is: http://www.io1.biz/blogs/example-module-drupal-ireland-meetup-2008

Thanks to all of the 14

scor's picture

Thanks to all of the 14 people for turning up to the event. The presentations were very informative. Given that it was a last minute organized event, I'm sure with a better promotion we will be able to fill the DERI conference room next time! Let's see how many of us it'll take...

thanks john for the file,

heather's picture

thanks john for the file, and thanks stephane and everyone at DERI for getting the group together there. i wouldn't mind coming back to galway :)

Thanks!

Thoroughly enjoyed the meetup and getting to hear what others are up to - nice cross-section of activities as well.

Yeah, thanks to scor and

stella's picture

Yeah, thanks to scor and everyone else involved for organising this meetup - can't wait for the next one! Perhaps we'll be able to organise one in Dublin soon. Anyone interested?

dublin

frost's picture

+1 for dublin but not too soon! working on a few drupal sites to a deadline so need to get them out of the way first!

I'd be up for a Dublin one

daniel.hunt's picture

I'd be up for a Dublin one :)

Thanks

GrayMac's picture

Yes, thanks for organizing!
Was good to go to an Ireland meetup after having been to two in South Africa.

Obviously a Dublin one would be easy for me, but anywhere's good - nice to get away too :-)
