Planning our meetups

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

@brucelet has offered what sounds like an excellent meeting space on the North Shore for monthly meetups.

So the next item of business is: what day/time?

Time should be somewhat easy: 7:30pm would be my choice, as that would give people time to grab a bite to eat after work/school and before the meetup. (Groups could form ad-hoc to eat together before the meetup, too). But I'm open to other times.

@DavidWheelerPhD suggested the first Wednesday of the month, but that doesn't work for @PghFreeNet. Second Wednesday? Or how about first or second Tuesday (actually better for me, but I could do either).

What are your best/worst times? Actually, if everyone posted the following, we could sort if out:
* days that will NOT work at all (like: PghFreeNet might say "First Wednesday of the Month doesn't work for me")
* preferred days (e.g., Tuesdays, Thursdays)
* alternate available days (e.g., Mondays, Wednesdays)
* oh: and please include preferred/alternate times

Thanks!

PS: logistical question: when I post to a thread, I get emails of responses, but can someone tell me how I subscribe to any/every post/response in this entire group?

Days that don't work

Conflicts with other events (some may be of interest to Drupalers):

  • First Wednesdays -- Pgh PHP Developers Meetup, (various locations), 6:30-9p; [I also have two other conflicting meetings]
  • First Thursdays -- Pgh Geek Night, Church Brew Works, 5-9p (even numbered months only), variety of free eats - buy your own drinks, sponsored by a different tech firm ea. mo., good networking opportunity; Green Party mtg (they use Drupal for their websites)
  • Second Thursdays -- [non-geek mtg conflict]
  • Third Tuesdays -- Pgh Web Design Meetup, Imagebox, 4933 Penn Avenue, 7:30p
  • Third Fridays -- Pgh Green Drinks, Mitchell's, 5-8p, variety of free eats - buy your own drinks, different environmentally oriented sponsor each month, good networking opportunity

Hack Pittsburgh tends to have Friday night events throughout the month.

PS: Fen, at the top of the page select "My Account", then select "Notifications". Under the Overview if you click on edit your notification settings, you'll probably see that you checked off to automatically subscribe to threads to which you reply but that you didn't check the next item to automatically enable notifications for any group that you joined. You don't need to check that if you belong to a number of groups and just want to get all posts from this group only. First you might want to review your subscriptions under "Subscriptions" then add one for this group by clicking "Add Subscription", selecting "Content type in group", and choosing one or more types.

bug in edit my subscription?

Hmmm... I had tried that and I just tried it again. The "Edit your notifications settings" URL (for me) is http://groups.drupal.org/user/496/edit which brings me to my account edit page. Can you confirm that this is not the same URL (modulo a different UID) that you end up on when you click on that? I'd like to know if this is a pervasive bug or limited only to me.

Thanks!

Great Events Listing!

I'll added the PHP Developers/Web Design meetups and the Geek/Green Drinks events to the DrupalPGH Calendar which you can see at https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=fen@drupalpgh.org&ctz=America/...

And I'm going to try to make it to some of those!

Regular Meeting

LizD's picture

As of now Wednesdays are out for me. Also the second Tuesday of the month is out. How about setting up an event on Doodle (http://www.doodle.com) to see what availability is for everyone?

doodle?

LizD - could you do this please? Probably easier for you if you have experience with Doodle (I don't)...

Doodle Calendar fpr scheduling meeting time

LizD's picture

I have set up a Doodle calendar for us to see everyone's availability. You can access it here: http://www.doodle.com/mz3ytxedhuwdq4gk
Just enter your name and follow the instructions. We are using the beta calendar view so be sure to click the "suggest" button first or the "Save" button doesn't become active. If you have a one time conflict but are otherwise available. please mark it as available as this is not just for February but for future scheduling.

Thanks

Monday is winning!

davidwheelerphd's picture

Looking at the Doodle calendar, it looks like Mondays are the most available with some Thursdays available.
We only have 6 responses from the 104 members; so, go to the above link and enter your general availability (not just specific to February). We want to get a meeting time that is good for most of our members.

What's the word

marktfrey's picture

on our monthly meetup? As David has pointed out, response to the availability poll has been less than stellar, though Mondays appear to be winning.

I propose we aim for Monday the 7th for the February meetup, since the 14th is Valentine's Day (and though I seem to have marked myself as available on the doodle, it's probably in my best interest to be unavailable this month). If others have a better idea for Feb, I'm open to it, but we should work on getting something on the calendar.

Going forward, I'm open to first or second Mondays, as availability seems to be pretty good.

First Mondays

Thanks, Mark! (Apologies for being asleep at the wheel)

Gotta get the 'OK' from our host, @brucelet, that this works (not to mention directions).

Bruce - if you'd like, create an event and let's plan on Feb 7th at 7:30pm.

Or I can - let me know.

This reminds me that I told

linclark.research's picture

This reminds me that I told Fen I'd let you all know when I'll be back in town.

I'm coming back on Feb 23 and will be in town until March 4 or so. Looking forward to seeing folks, hope we can get a dinner/meetup in :)

Last Monday?

fen's picture

Maybe we can push our following meeting up to Monday the 28th - or perhaps at least plan a dinner get together.

Mmmmm... Ethiopiean. What was the name of that place we went to?

Tana Ethiopian in East

linclark.research's picture

Tana Ethiopian in East Liberty. Would definitely go again

Sounds good to me

marktfrey's picture

I've no objection to doing the 28th, as it'd be good to see Lin and good to have Ethiopian. Perhaps we could shore up the recurring meeting then.

meeting 2/7

Sorry, I also was asleep at the wheel. I need to turn notifications on.

I will check and confirm 2/7 at 7:30 for our building- Riverside Center for Innovations on River Avenue in Northside.

Meeting 2/7 Confirmed

brucelet's picture

I have confirmed that we have the conference room at our building for the meeting on 2/7 at 7:30PM. The location is 700 River Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212. If you are coming from downtown, go across the 9th Street Bridge to Northside and make a right like you're going north on Route 28. Keep to the right and go on River Avenue in front of the Confluence building. We're the next building on the left.

I'll bring some beer and snacks, but if anyone else wants to bring something, please do.

We have wireless and wired access there, so we can compute if we need to.

Anybody have a topic to discuss? I could give some info on Acquia's products like Drupal Commons and Drupal Gardens if that is of interest. We just became an Acquia partner, so they've flooded me with stuff.

Perhaps people could reply here if they're coming so we have a count? I'm not real good at organizing.

Event Made

davidwheelerphd's picture

Bruce,
I made an event with you as one of the organizers so you could edit it. Is there a room number? Where should people park?

I vote for a presentation on Acquia as you suggested. We will also have time for others to share their experiences, favorite modules, and ask for help.

Everyone sign up at the event so we can get a head count.
