Hello! Welcome to Huntsville on Drupal Groups. If you are from the North Alabama area and use Drupal, step up and introduce yourself. We are hoping to have a local Drupal meetup in the future. This won't happen unless you chime in.

I'm Eric. I've been using Drupal for a few years, but I am finally starting to understand how flexible and powerful it can be.

I have used Drupal for projects related to the Huntsville-area.

So, I'm Eric and I live in Huntsville. I am currently developing a site for a new church: http://sojournhuntsville.org/. I've been using Drupal for a few years, but never got into any major development with it on any site that is important. I have developed a few gaming-related sites including http://haloportable.com/.

Enjoyed the site

Eric...

Great job on the Sojourn site!

Is that your home church? Looks like a neat group.

Btw, I dunno if this will yield any Huntsville Drupal guys, but you might visit with AlabamaChristians.com, and click on the Huntsville link for Christian networking there. Just a thought.

Blessings!

Hi Eric,
I'm not in Huntsville (I use to be ~1990) but I am in Birmingham. I just started using drupal for my site http://howibecameaninternetmillionaire.com/ a few weeks ago. It seems to do quite a bit of what I'm looking for. I will probably get around to writing some modules but I have to teach myself php. Hopefully that won't be too hard as I've been developing c/c++/java for the past 18 years.
Have you ever thought about having a meetup? Doesn't look like it would be too hard to get the 5 subscribers together. I'd be glad to help. And be glad to head up to huntsville. Weekends would probably be easier than weekdays although with enough notice weekdays would be fine.

If any of the huntsville subscribers have online businesses such as consulting, eBay stores or what ever visit my site. I'm trying to build a comunity of entrepenures that can use my site to promote their online endevors, Its free to join and I'm sure that drupal users can provide lots of feedback even if you don't want to join at this time.

Great to know you are out there,

I'm probably going to be moving to Hsv for a while at the beginning of '07, so I will look forward to meeting the Drupal community there. Great looking site! I will likely also be looking for a church (my parents are happy at Southwood, but I to be a sucker for all this pomo-contemporary-emergent stuff) so I may have occasion to come visit you all.

Intro from up North

Tony Gettig's picture

Hello! My name is Tony Gettig and I currently live in Portage, Michigan. I am planning to relocate my family to the Huntsville/Decatur/Hartselle area after the new year. I am glad to see a Drupal group in the Huntsville area!

I currently use Drupal for many sites, and am in talks to replace my church's site with it. I'm not the greatest PHP programmer, but I'm not afraid to roll up my sleeves and make a few mods here and there. I hope to learn theme development in 2007.

Merry Christmas!

Hello, Tony. Thanks for

ericatkins's picture

Hello, Tony. Thanks for signing up on the group. Have you made it to Huntsville yet?

I kind of took the same approach with Sojourn's website. I don't know PHP at all, yet I was able to stumble my way through Drupal.

I hope you can reply and stay in tourch so that we can organize a meet up some time.

I'm using Drupal on a couple of other projects and I hope to learn more about it. It would be great to have a local support group.

Eric

Moved and ready

OK, I'm now moved to Hsv. If anyone else wants to set up a meeting, i'd love to get one going. I don't know where anything is here (been 12 years since I lived here) so I'm eager for suggestions for locations, date, time, etc.

Hello, Philip. I believe

Hello, Philip. I believe we've already met. Let's get together again sometime, maybe when Tony replies?

Hello EA

What's up guys. I live in the Huntsville area as well and work as a software engineer. As of now I'm fairly new to Drupal, but from what I've seen I have liked. I've worked in Mambo/Joomla before and I was introduced to Drupal by Eric. Ever since then, I haven't looked back, so it doesn't surprise me that there's quite a few people around here interested in Drupal.

New to Drupal but just finished a website

pilar's picture

Hi all Hunstville Drupal users. I started looking at Drupal early this summer for a revamp of a website that I inherited http://picture-book.com and almost gave up on Drupal. I jumped to several other CMS systems in my frustration such as Mambo, Dragonfly, Joomla but they were too constrictive and buggy so I finally sucked it up and plunged into Drupal.
I got some help from a great programmer in England to help with some custom modules--let me know if you every need anytone to do custom work he is very talented. My skills at programming were way to rusty(Georgia Tech CS '85) to tackle my needs and he was just the ticket.
I am very interested in developing more sites and am interested in training, module development and just "tips and tricks" for Drupal but since I live in Birmingham would like something nearby.
Please post your meeting events and maybe I can be there, in the meantime check out www.picture-book.com.

Drupal Help

Slams's picture

Hello Everyone, my name is Slate from Birmingham and I am looking for Drupal help. I have a few existing sites, they are really part time hobbies, and I am looking to convert them over to a CMS system. I installed Drupal a few months back, crashed it by loading a picture module and haven't had time to go in the database and fix the problem yet. But this aside, DRUPAL looks like it can accomplish what my long term plans are. However, as I'm sure is true for most you, I have a very limited amount of time to spend learning and developing the application. There is also the issue of moving my current databases into the DRUPAL's structure. I am wondering if anyone would be interested in some long term free lance help/work to help get me through the conversion. I would be paying from the revenue generated by my sites, which isn't much, so I this would have to spread out over time. However, there are no deadlines and I want this to be fun for whomever can help.

Thank You,

Slate McDorman

I have been feeling my way through Drupal for about 3 months now. I've been practicing my skills with naturalbirthresources.com, dev.ziggyzoggy.com, and am still growing armydomain.com from its still fairly basic layout. While I've been very happy with the online training I've been able to do with LearnByTheDrop/DrupalByTheDrop, I was really hoping to find some local folks to meet and discuss issues and tips.

Cory Berry

I'm with ya

rickhocutt's picture

Hey Cory, it's good to see another Drupal-er here in Huntsville. I'm with you on meeting up and sharing ideas and tips etc. I've been using Drupal to build sites for about a year or so now and I'm always willing to share any knowledge I have. The Drupal site's I have up now are: http://www.rickhocutt.com , http://www.myelegantclutter.com , http://www.marketstreetfestival.com and a few others.

Along with Learn by the Drop check out: http://mustardseedmedia.com/podcast Rob's videos are great and taught me a lot of what I know about Drupal. Also head over to Barnes & Nobles at Bridge Street and look at http://www.amazon.com/Using-Drupal-Angela-Byron/dp/0596515804/tag=drupal... This book is great!

It would be nice to setup a meetup sometime soon and possibly get a few others here involved (assuming they're still around). Maybe they will post a comment here. If not we can get together sometime. Starbucks or Atlanta Bread or a similar location is always good. Do you work off a laptop?

Rick Hocutt

Similar Drupal training

PortableFan's picture

Oh, yes, I'm familiar with Mustardseed Media. Those videos and the Drop ones are on my iPod whenever I need a quick refresher. I was glad to see recently that the Mustardseed podcasts are back in production again.

And Using Drupal was the first book I read on Drupal and still the essential book amongst the ones I've read.

All of my Drupal work so far has been off of a server. I have been considering doing one on my laptop for more practice, but that device is, unfortunately, in the midst of technical problems that must delay that effort.

Drupal in HSV

cboling's picture

Looks like there are a few new people in the area working with Drupal. I've been working with Drupal 7 (mostly part time) for a couple of years and would be happy to share any experiences. Mainly done work for small clubs/organizations and quite a bit of under the hook poking with PHP to learn about custom module development.

Over the next year or so I plan to look more into the Commerce Modules first for an almost off-the-shelf type of store and then later on a much more custom set of commerce modules (due to insurance requirements) for another organization.

@Monicayother, I suggest starting a new post asking for tips and let people (the few that there are around town) add comments. Make sure you mention what kind of functionality you are looking for in your website.

My first suggestion would be to create a debug machine (locally) and come up with, and stick with, a good backup routine (as simple as tar/zip of one tree and a matching db dump from Phpadmin of your database). It just takes a small amount of time, but will save you days of effort in the long run.

In general, I'm pretty well booked during the evenings, but would be happy to do any get togethers around lunchtime. I'm in Research Park and can usually take make lunch anytime between 11 and 1.

Hello from University of Alabama in Huntsville

ajinkya.kulkarni's picture

Hello Chip, John and @monicayother. Nice to see some Drupal activity in Huntsville users group. I am working full-time at UAH with Drupal from last three years and I am looking forward to meeting, sharing and contributing ideas to Drupal Huntsville group.

mid-day meetup

monicayother's picture

Hello!
Thanks for the reply Chip and John! I'm thrilled to hear from others who are using Drupal and willing to share. I am brand new to it, and have used lynda.com to learn some very basic things..but I need to be able to ask questions and get feedback from real people.

I don't want to rely on ready made themes because as a designer, I can't ever stick to a template anyway. I've been building wordpress sites for a few years, but this is so different!

Chip, I'll take your advice and ask some specific questions via posts, but I did want to say thanks to both of your for answering. I work from my studio at Lowe Mill and home, so if we ever wanted to meet up middle of the day around Research Park/UAH is perfect.

Thanks again, and maybe we can stir up some more people!

Huntsville Meetup

johns10's picture

Maybe we could organize a monthly meetup. I would be happy to take the lead on logistics. How are weekends for ya'll? Maybe we could do a Saturday lunch and block off a couple of hours?

I have pretty extensive experience with the Commerce modules at this point and would be happy to provide guidance cboling. I would also be happy to provide guidance to Monica or anyone else who needs it. I'm not exactly an expert but will be happy to share my knowledge.

Regards,
John Davenport

Weekends are tough for me to make

cboling's picture

I do quite a bit of travel on the weekends (especially late-summer to end-of-year). So weekdays are best here. I have no trouble done lunches longer than an hour, so if someone is more time constrained during lunch, I can travel further if it helps their schedule. Of course it is not to hard to get anywhere in Huntsville fairly quickly.

meetup..

drupal_kid's picture

Weekends are good - at least until summer starts - then we could always have a look at alternatives... weeknights are a bit tougher - although it's only just over an hour drive from Birmingham...

Weekdays are best for me as well. Monthly sounds good.

my first official question

monicayother's picture

hello
I keep getting messages like this:

bkefxo3336 has applied for an account.
http://mywebdesigners.net/user/52/edit

What does that mean?

The url is for the test site I am working on now..there is no actual content on there, but it's my learning ground. I am probably doing this all wrong, but I created this site on a server, not my desktop since I access it from home and my laptop.

This will probably show you how little I know! But I learned a long time ago to ask questions!

It's a bot

cboling's picture

You have your account settings such that new users must be approved by the admin. The bot's are a pain and do not go away. I'm pretty sure some of them have some low-cost labor behind them to help get around a few of the safeguard modules out there.

On new installs, test machines, and development boxes that may show up on a name server query, I bury the login prompt to start with. I do this by loading the logintoboggan module (default settings okay for now) and then creating a page (typically called login). Once created, go to Admin->Structure->Blocks and select the theme you have installed. Remove any existing 'login' block and replace it with the logintoboggan block. Then go to the settings for the logintoboggan block and at the bottom, select the 'only listed pages' radio button and put in 'login' or whatever the name for the basic page you just created.

With that done, the 'login' link only shows up on that page.

Once a site progresses enough that you want others to register or test it, adjust the login settings to how you would like to administer sites. You may also want to install something like the reCaptcha and spambot (I often use both) to help cut down on the bots.

If you do use logintoboggan and allow users to verify themselves, you may want to use it's capabilities to put unverified users into a specific role (that does not have comment/add-content rights). On more than one site, I've had to even add an extra role called 'valid user' (or something similar) and manually add users that I know are good. Only these users have comment and add-content rights. If you turn on page tracking and examine the mail address, timezone, and some of the initial pages they go to, you will quickly get a feel of how a few of the bots that make it past reCaptcha and spambot work.

Thanks!

monicayother - weekday lunch
drupal_kid - weekends

Let's start with a lunch. How about next thursday (3/28) at noon somewhere in research park?

3/28 is good for me

cboling's picture

Any preferences out there? If someone has a max 1-hour cap on lunch, I suggest we eat somewhere closer to them to start with.

I can eat most anything except far-east. If the weather is nice, an outdoor table and we could move inside if the weather does not cooperate.

There is the Mexican place in Bridge Street near Barnes & Nobles, several others in Providence, and of course quite a few up and down University.

Hi, I'm from Decatur and

Hi all -- after years of lurking, I'm delighted to see some activity popping up here. I'm a front-line staffer at Acquia, and have worked with Drupal (generally solo) for quite a few years. I've been hoping some people would pop up in northeastern Alabama.

I am completely unavailable on the 28th, due to work conflicts.

I would love to see a group finally spring up here! I've been waiting in the wings for a while to see if anyone else would show up.

monicayother's picture

What is the best way to start building a site that has a full graphic for the home page background, then a fairly typical left sidebar, one column layout for the rest of the site?

I was sort of trying zen because i don't see a theme close to what I want to do, but there are other building base themes and I don't know which has the best support or features.

Recommendations? I am not a coder or programmer, I am designer who builds sites so please keep that in mind... thank you!

Let's take this to another post...

Let's go ahead and start fresh topics for each of your questions, so this thread stays usable. What you're asking is a deceptively small question!

Would it be helpful if we tossed a Google Calendar or Google Doc up so that we could coordinate availability?

That would be awesome

+1 for 4/3

domesticat's picture

Agreed. I can do April 3, as well. I've blocked off the lunch times so no one will schedule me. I'm in the Monrovia / Harvest area, so the western side of the city is my first choice.

Though, my coworkers have listened to me complain "no local community" for so long that if I tell them there's a small group meetup locally, they'll cheerfully kick me out of my office to attend.

(Joshua, it'll be nice to finally meet you after ages on teh twitterz.)

Hi all!

gcaudle's picture

Hi all!

Another Birmingham Drupal user here - I am the web services administrator for the UAB School of Public Health.

http://www.soph.uab.edu

I've been managing Drupal installs in a production environment since 2007. I run about 25 different D6 and D7 installs here on VMWare wampservers, including custom themes, views, LDAP integration, facebook connect, and all kinds of other tricks, for about 400 authenticated users serving up about 35,000 page views per day. Y'all feel free to contact me with questions. I wish I could make it to the meetup, but that week is National Public Health Week, which always keeps me busy. Perhaps we could schedule a Birmingham area meetup? I run a UAB Drupal Users Group meeting monthly at The Edge of Chaos at UAB http://www.theedgeofchaos.org (Another D7 site I built) and I would love to open that up to include others in the area.

I look forward to seeing all the great Drupal sites coming out of north Alabama!

Knock...Knock....Anyone home?

sethgraybeal's picture

Is anyone still here?

I am a PHP Developer for NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center. Last year I was told to put together a site for the public in a framework called Drupal. I had worked a bit with WordPress and heard crazy stories about Joomla, so I didn't know what to expect from Drupal. All in all it wasn't too bad (ours is a modified version of Drupal)

From there I started using Drupal on a few side projects and it has replaced me building custom CMS's from the ground up. I like that Drupal has so much already built in - yet I can still mess with the PHP if I feel that I need to.

My next step is to become so familiar with Drupal that I can start pursuing my Drupal Certifications.

Home but asleep

I joined this group a while back and have not seen much activity. I worked at Marshall several years ago doing web development. Now I'm the developer for the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library.

Hi !
I'm the organizer of Drupal Camp Chattanooga, and the local CHA DUG meetup.
If you guys need help getting a regular meetup going, I'll be glad to drop in and do some of my presentations. (Maybe drag a local fellow or two along as well.)

What you'll need is a regular time and location, the presentation subjects can come later. Just get together regularly.
I'd be happy to help out to get a regular group started - but someone local is going to have to be the main person that schedules everything.

Feel free to get in touch.
