Contributing to Drupal: the Issue Queues and Patching

Drupal.org's "issue queues" are where you can find answers to your problems, and where Drupal is collaboratively created. Learning to navigate and use them will help you become more successful with Drupal and a member of the community.

This topic will cover, generally, Drupal's open source development process for core and contributed modules/themes, as well as best practices in the issue queues. Practically:

We'll discuss how the issue queues work:

  • how to search them effectively to find answers
  • how to read and follow an issue to figure out the status of a fix or feature
  • how to evaluate a module's health/stability by its issue queue, and
  • how to post effectively: to solve problems, help others, and help build Drupal.

We'll also discuss patches, (changes to code or documentation meant to fix or improve Drupal core and its contributed modules and themes):

  • how to apply a patch to a module (or Drupal core,)
  • how to make a patch, yourself, and
  • how to review a patch.
