I am trying to create a group which has similar features to http://www.amazee.com/node/6730/wall. I am doing it with organic groups and 80% of the functionality can be done out of the box this this module. My questions to advanced devs would be:
- Do you recommend using any other module besides organic groups?
- In organic groups if you view the discussions page of a certain group, it shows threads the amount of comments in (). How would you do the feature like in the link above to allow multiple comments showing up on the "wall"?
- How can I easily implement "invite friends" + "tell others" features for the group?
Many thanks for helping and giving hints/tips.

Have a look at openatrium
I believe the functionality you are looking for is implemented in there. Maybe analyzing that one helps you solving your issues.

Das geht so. Es gibt einen
Das geht so. Es gibt einen Block "Gruppendetails" wo die ganzen Links drinstehen: Freund einladen, Meine Mitgliedschaft, etc.
Knowing or finding Drupal modules can be time consuming
The best help for this (at least for me it is) is get some directions or keywords. Short answers to your questions from my side are:
It depends, whether it is enough with the functionality of OG module. Personally I'd go for some kind of access control and possibli subgroups, if you need to divide a group into groups deeper. Again, depending on functionality Panels, Views, CCK CTools, Advanced Profile Kit are modules, which you can use, to improve or modify your layout and content types. There are so much more you can do with other modules, but you have to decide, what functionality you'd want on your site.
I'd go with views, and create Page display, which you can tune forward up to your needs. And then replace default path with your custom view path in URL.
This can get you up. http://drupal.org/project/modules?filters=bs_project_sandbox%3A0&solrsor... There is a module - Invite or User Relationship. It depends again on your needs. I think, that there was some modules for Tell a friend kind, but this could be overcome with the same Webform module, or, what I recently used is AddThis module, where you can switch off bookmarkings, if not needed, but there is a function - send an email, which you'd like.
Notice!
Please do turn your attention to your chosen Drupal distribution - v6 or v7, as in v7 not all these functional modules are available yet. In some case it could be your show stopper. That is why it is important to think over your intended functionality, before you start digging deeper.
Organic Groups and Invite Friends
To answer one of your questions, I remember playing with Organic Groups in Drupal 6 a while back, and I downloaded a third party module which had an Invite Friends feature I could add on to the site and it worked well during testing. Later on I believe I realized that Organic Groups in Drupal 6 had it built in (one of those hidden features I needed to expose), and I didn't require a third party module at all.
I am not sure how Invite Friends would work with Organic Groups in Drupal 7, but if anyone has this information at their fingertips I'd like to know?
Currently I am testing out Organic Groups in Drupal 7 and it looks promising. Different paradigm. Less out of the box. More modular. Perhaps more flexibility than in Drupal 6. Integrates well with Panels.
I know the maintainer for Organic Groups in Drupal 7 has put a lot of thought into it and work into making it more modular. Seems more customizable.
Given the points I mentioned above there's a lot to customize with Organic Groups in Drupal 7, to fit into each of our individual design scheme of things. We should also pool our efforts, knowledge, resources to make Organic Groups in Drupal 7 and related features/components better, instead of branching out in different directions.
Organic Groups is a topic in and of itself. So perhaps we need a dedicated mailing list for Organic Groups in Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 where we can pool these resources, and upload the posts to the net for easy historical search and retrieval?
