Drupalcon Africa 2012 - Cape Town ICC, early March..... I'll totally be there! I regularly meet with Robert Castello who is organising the London Drupalcon 2011, I could pitch the idea to him to see what the interest would be like??
I would love to see this happen in Cape Town, however the cost would be an issue. All the developers and attendees would have to fly a long way from Europe and the USA, so numbers would be down, meaning it would be hard for the association to turn a profit.
Yeah I'm totally in support and wish for-profit companies in Africa will be willing to support. The advantages are numerous for local devs and starters.

Hi Mark,
I would like to think Cape town is no more expensive than London, though I have only experienced life in Cape town and I'm not well informed on what goes into putting together con's.
I'm guessing Europeans and fellow Africans would easily be able to make it down south and maybe we could do something unprecedented and partner with other open source projects. (African Penguins anyone?).

The only major expense is the ticket. Once they are here they live like kings. I think the question is rather if South Africa has a big enough audience for this. Would be kinda odd to go to the drupalcon and 90% of the developers there are not from here.
There are only 191 members for drupal south africa and i am sure a few are not even active in the drupal community anyone.
Drupalers are mostly based in the US and Europe. So we take turns paying the price of the ticket, or simply skip the one that isn't local. For all of us to pay the price of a flight is very expensive, especially since the transatlantic flights are cheaper in general.
The Drupal Association barely breaks even on the European Drupalcon. The USA Drupalcon is the one that actually makes money.
I'm not saying it's not possible, but I think it's a long way off. There needs to be a very strong local organising committee, with experience setting up Drupal Camps, etc. I hear of maybe one meetup every 2 months in the whole of SA! That needs to increase quite a lot before the association will hold an official event in SA. :)

Agreed Mark. Our London groups do about two meetups a month and we hold various drupal camps throughout the year so there guys in SA will have to work towards having regional meetups at least once a month and a few drupal camps as you mentioned. Maybe not next year but hopefully soon.
I think the focus should be to grow the SA drupal community. That is easier said than done, I know, but small steps accumulate eventually. SA guys, you need to set up some groups on meetup.com, invite some people, invite other open source groups/companies to attend etc etc and get the ball rolling. These things tend to grow "organically" after a while as more people become involved.
I only speak for myself but I would easily fly to Cape Town for a drupalcon.... Sun, sea, surf and good night spots... where do I sign!

I also think having a Drupalcon is a long way off. Suggestions above are good, so:
We haven't even had a proper Drupalcamp in SA.
So why not start with that first?
Get sponsorship, get other groups involved etc.
Maybe even get one of the big Drupal gurus to come give us a talk.
I would suggest that CT and JHB should put that on their agenda for the next meetup to talk about.
Mark - both the Cape Town and Joburg groups have regular monthly meetings. Joburg has hosted two Drupalcamp's in August 2009 as well as August 2010. I'd agree that the committees would need to be better formalised/organised to arrange something like a Drupalcon.
The idea of a Drupal Safari (Drupalcon) has been discussed several times in the Joburg group. I think hosting it in Cape Town probably makes more sense from a tourist point of view.
There will be naturally be less attendance than the European / North American Drupalcon's, but I don't see a reason not to hold it. We could focus on quality, rather than size.

Maybe we should put up a questionaire and find how many people would be interested
