Poll origins and troubles

bewhy's picture
  1. This poll is in response to http://groups.drupal.org/node/133714#comment-448384

  2. I tried to put in more options than the two above but Captcha wanted me to fill in the captcha when i clicked "add another" [poll answer] and isn't letting me back in to edit it. btw: does anyone know why I can only see the captcha after i try to submit a post?

Diversity and Outreach

I still think it should just be "Diversity and Outreach". Recruitment has connotations that I think we ought to keep out of this, as I commented in the thread you referenced http://groups.drupal.org/node/133714#comment-448384 there were several +1's on that.

I agree. I would have voted

ZenDoodles's picture

I agree.

I would have voted for "Diversity and Outreach".

Also, are we really ready for voting yet?
If we really are and you can't edit the poll, maybe it makes sense to close this one and open a new poll with more of the suggested options?

cool

bewhy's picture

It doesn't look like i can close the poll . . . but i un-voted . . .

I was also a fan of the initials DROP . . . for obvious reasons

So ZenDoodles could you open another poll with these three options? I'm afraid I'm still getting the captcha issue

People liked "DORP" because

xjm's picture

People liked "DORP" because it means village in Dutch or something. I think "Diversity and Outreach" is better, but people were so enthusiastic about backronymning. :)

Then how about: Diversity,

arianek's picture

Then how about:

Diversity, Outreach, and Relations Project
Diversity and Outreach Revolution Project

(Ok, neither are great, but my point: maybe we can think of a different R word?)

I didn't know...

ZenDoodles's picture

Heh... I did not realize DORP had meaning. I just thought it sounded like derp (http://derp.memebase.com/) which was a little unappealing to me. Also, while I agree, recruitment has undesirable connotations, to be honest, it's not a deal breaker for me either way.

At this point, I've spent more time discussing the group name than participating in meaningful discussions about what we're going to do, so in a way, I'd kinda like to bow out of this debate entirely. I recognize the importance of first impressions and branding, but it doesn't really mean enough to me to make a stand either way. I'm sure there are diverse PR experts out there who'd be able to make a much more informed addition to the discussion than I. Is there not an equivalent to http://twitter.com/hajjflemings in the Drupal community?

@BeWhy, I'm Sorry. I have the same issue with the captcha to add another field, so I didn't start another poll. I wonder if this problem is already in an issue queue somewhere?

My beef with "recruitment"

jackalope's picture

I sincerely hope the word "recruitment" is dropped entirely. It smacks of quotas, of diversity = good numbers rather than diversity = a result of good community dynamics and politics.

I don't want to simply "recruit" certain people to Drupal; rather, I want to make sure that the Drupal community is a welcoming and accountable environment so that members of oppressed or minority groups don't feel alienated, excluded, devalued, or silenced. In this way, we can create an environment in which people of color, women, queer and trans folks, and other oppressed peoples/minorities feel like they can participate without fighting an uphill battle against privilege and prejudice, an environment in which we feel like we can count on allies to have our backs and ensure true accountability and respect within the Drupal community.

This isn't just semantics; it's really about the whole point of this group and the perspectives, politics, and goals that it's going to embrace. I hope that these things wind up being such that increasing numbers and getting nicer demographics are side effects of the work we do rather than goals in and of themselves. If nice numbers and nice statistics really ARE the goals, then leave the word recruitment in, and count me out!

I couldn't agree more

davideads's picture

Somehow I didn't realize this thread was happening! I couldn't agree more with jackalope on this. This is what I just tried to say on the old issue thread, but said a lot better.

"Recruitment" detracts from the values of good community dynamics, accountability, and mutual respect. Marketing and recruitment is about reaching out, diversity is about reaching in and creating a healthy, nourishing ecosystem and community.

I was able to create a new

arianek's picture

I was able to create a new poll - I've included every suggestion from this page: http://groups.drupal.org/node/140299

I'd really like to change the name sooner than later, as I don't really like directing people to this group while it has "recruitment" in the name! So please vote!
