Does any on have a recommendation for a particularly well managed hosting services for Drupal?

As one can expect we are looking for the hidden gem, great service low prices.

As an open source project do most folk host in house?

I'm glad you brought this up, I'm in the middle of the same research and have settled on Acquias Professional plan ($2500/yr) http://acquia.com/product-matrix. Acquia really is the leader in Drupal support and although my budget can't support the $10,000+ white glove hosting service, I hope to get there some day. Talking to the sales rep made it very clear that everyone ons taff knows Drupal inside/out and can advise you if you get stumped. Its also clear that they provide a finely honed Drupal configuration for your site to perform at its best. The have a good intro plan at $350/yr but I also stumbled upon several others that fit the average hosting budget, especially HostGator which is recommended on the drupal site somewhere.

Hi Vermont group!

I lived in Vermont for 8 years and went to UVM class of 00.
I joined this group just to see what was going on in Drupal in Vermont just in case we decide to come back. I am in So Cal now and a member of LA Drupal.

I have a couple of recommendations for small hosting not big industry solutions.

I like Hot Drupal for hosting period. The owner is at Drupal conferences all the time. His name is Steve. He will be the one responding to tickets you post himself many times. He is very knowledgable and runs a great service and it's super affordable and he does offer VPN if you need it.

Also, you might look at web enabled. You can try it for free for up to 2 sites. It has some awesome features like a drush gui interface and one click site cloning and you can deploy your site from web enabled to another server with one click as well. Really cool stuff.

a little late on this.. but if you are looking for cheap/shared hosting, you really can't beat hotdrupal. great prices, TOP NOTCH customer support, fast servers, ssh access.

I can't speak to acquia's hosting, but you are getting a lot more than just hosting by going with them, that's a whole support package.
