I think you can create the "panel page". And add the diff. "Views" to the "panel page".
It is how the BIG box be created.
In each BIG box, if you want to create a SMALL box, you can use the css to handle it.
Such as adding

id_of_you_block img {

 border: 5px solid #fff;

}

Here is my personal blog, it is still under development.
I also created a SMALL box for the thumbnail.

but it is in drupal 7. I think it is the same for drupal 6.

create your own module use

  1. create your own module
  2. use hook_block
  3. use db_query for your sql request (table {users} => select name, picture...)
  4. use l() to create your link.
  5. use css

Simple and fast.
