DrupalCon 2008, Szeged report

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Stéphane Corlosquet (scor), Myself, Alan Burke, Stella Power, John Morahan are enjoying Drupalcon... it's really brilliant- I just wanted to start this thread so we can give fresh reports on what presentations we're seeing, and enjoying for those who could not make it.

Ireland's well represented - with Stella and Stephane giving presentations! (Stella is presenting tomorrow on jQuery and Stephane is presenting on the Semantic web). It's great to see the contributions of our user group!

Today I saw a great presentation on "Building the Drupal Community" with lots of great advice about planning, developing and growing local Drupal communities.

One thing I notice is that most people are much further along in their local communities- with smaller regional meet-ups and larger country-wide DrupalCamps.. Though Ireland did have a DrupalCamp last year, and there are of course the consistent Drupal Meet ups planned and organised by the Galway contingent- as well as the Adobe User Group in Dublin planning more meet-ups in Dublin...
FYI: http://barcamp.org/DrupalCamp+Ireland

So- I think we're building a critical mass here in Ireland now, and more people becoming involved developing local Drupal groups. That's great for you folks in Dublin and Galway! But in Sligo, my situation is different. My goal is to go back to Sligo, and give demonstrations and workshops to particular usergroups (e.g., students, small businesses, artists, anyone else)- I'm interested in contacting the Sligo County Enterprise board for the connections. I think in Sligo... I'm looking at a situation of attracting users to Drupal, rather than gathering existing users.

I don't know what it's like for you guys in your local area?

Anyway- hoping the others will have a chance to write about what they're excited about. It's really an active busy conference. If we're not in sessions, we're talking with other developers, designers, end users- and there's always something on.

Thanks for the report, nice to see things are going well. Fair play to Stella and Stephane for presenting!

Good luck with getting things going in Sligo, I'm sure Galway based folks would be happy to nip over there to assist if you needed some people to help with those who've taken an interest in Drupal.

Learning lots of cool new stuff.

The event organisers seem to have a better handle on Video this time around, and are hoping to have video live on
http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/program/sessions
much sooner, within a few days.

Watch Stella wow the audeince with her jQuery Powers?
Listen to me asking stupid questions!

Drupalcon Szeged Rocked!

Drupalcon Szeged was absolutely fantastic! If you haven't been to a Drupalcon yet I would totally recommend it. One of the best things was I could finally put faces to the nicks who I've encountered over the past two years on IRC and drupal.org. There were also some really fantastic presentations - my only problem there were too many which I wanted to see! Thankfully, it was really well organised and all of the main presentations are now available to watch on http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/program/sessions

Other highlights for me (other than not getting stage fright!), were participating in the Awesome Testing Party where I submitted my first core patch, seeing Barry Jaspan's (Acquia) presentation on Automatic Security Testing with Static and Dynamic Analysis and being able to finally get some feedback on my JS Coding Standards proposal. The feedback I received was really fantastic, so major thanks to quicksketch and pwolanin. Give me another couple of weeks and we'll have a comprehensive Drupal JS coding standards doc on d.o and checks on JS files in Coder.

I would also like to say kudos to Alan for jumping in and becoming an advocate for CSS coding standards. He wrote up a proposal at http://groups.drupal.org/node/14421 and has also gotten lots of positive feedback. So it won't be long before the Coder module can check css files too!
