Is there a module that would allow you to type a location and which then zooms the map to that location?
As ask as it can be quite cumbersome to zoom and pan.

There are widgets that will do that for individual nodes, i.e. Openlayers Geocoder with Openlayers CCK in Drupal 6, or Geolocation in Drupal7. It sounds like you are looking for an interactive display. I don't know of anything that does that.
