Start:
2008-09-25 19:00 - 21:00 Hongkong
Event type:
User group meeting

For the 1st meeting of HKDUG

64 Mac Donnell Rd. Flat 6A,
Google Map
the apartment of Antonio.

Should we order pizza?

The schedule will include:

  • introductions (~30min): Introduce ourselves to each other. At BarCamp Hong Kong 2008 we didn't have enough time for that, so I am really looking for this :D
  • CCK + Views (~45min): Dave will be presenting about these must-have modules. I'll start by assuming that you have littleknowledge about these and hopefully we'll get into some more advanced topics and into some best practices.
  • Q&A or FAQ section (~30min): It's always easier to ask your questions face-to-face. Prepare your question and we'll brainstorm a sollution together!
  • Discuss where we go from here (~15min): Any idea for our next meeting? Any other ideas for HKDUG? We need your suggestion :)

You can also check out the event on facebook.

@Dava: Should we also mention the facebook event too? Seems it is more simple to trace the event though facebook.

Closest MTR

spyderboy's picture

Hey there... closest MTR is Admiralty, and then a relatively short walk across Hong Kong Park from Pacific Place. Head towards Kennedy Rd, and up the stairs across the street. 64 Mac Donnell is just at the top of those stairs on the opposite side of the street. Go all the way up the stairs and buzz 6A to get in!

Looking forward to it!

Preparation for meeting

cloneofsnake's picture

"I'll call it, Preparation... H."

Hey y'all, I'm really looking forward to this Thursday's event! Got a few suggestions here I think will help us be more prepared for the meeting:

* introductions (~30min): Why don't we aim for a 3 - 5 mins intro about ourselves... and besides the usual background on our work experience / interests / specialties / family history... etc etc, let's also talk about something specific to Drupal - may be show a few sample sites you've created, or how you began learning Drupal, or what kind of sites you want to create w/ Drupal.... Also, may be what you can offer to help and what you want to get help on. (Don't forget your name + contact info!!) :P

* CCK + Views (~45min): Dave will get into some more advanced topics and into some best practices. - Folks, what are your expectations on this? Reply and let Dave know what you're thinking so Dave can be more prepared! Dave can decide before the meeting whether to incorporate our suggestions into the 45 min session.

For me, I think may be Dave can demo creating a few popular views... e.g. a blog entry page w/ multiple photos + comments; A blog archive / listing page w/ just one picture per blog entry, and a total of ~10 entries; and may be a tag / categories listing page, created on the fly w/ Drupal's taxonomy? (Are these "Views" related??)

* Discuss where we go from here (~15min): - have your pen & paper ready during introduction, write down what u're interested in learning from others. In our "pre-meeting" last Monday, we already came up with a few potential future topics - 1) Theming. 2) Our development environment and best practices. (I only remember these 2, what else do you have, Edison?

I have coupons for Pizza Hut & KFC... I'll bring them. :)

No response? I also wanted

No response?

I also wanted to ask Dave if he plans to have his session taped and put on the web? If so, then we need video equipments. Anyone? I can bring a JVC HD based camcorder if needed.

Good idea

caphun's picture

If anyone has a MP3 recorder to record down the session that'll be good as well.

Preparing for an introduction is a good idea too but I don't think we should stress about it... there will be much chance to know each other in the forth coming meet-ups.

I'm really looking forward to the CCK and Views presentation. Btw, I know this is a bit of a late request but is it possible to touch a bit on the differences in D6 CCK and Views, if any?

Look forward to seeing the gang :-)

I'd watch

I'll definitely watch the presentations if someone can record them. I'll catch you all at the next meeting.

Sounds interesting, though I

Sounds interesting, though I won't be talking about anything that you can't find on the internets. The greater value in these sorts of things comes from being able to interact and ask questions which you don't get in a video.

Couldn't get my hands on the camcorder... if anyone else want to record this, please bring your camcorder.

Anyone has a mp3 player / recorder? Bring that too!

Tony, so is your building the "Beau Cloud Mansion"?

Location, Beer, Pizza, KFC, Camcorder.

spyderboy's picture

Not necessarily in that order... :)

So small correction on location: Mid Levels East... just above HK Park and Kennedy Rd. The rest of it is correct.

I have plenty of beer stocked, and we can order up some pizza and or KFC at the outset and it will give us a good excuse to take a break midway.

I also have a pretty decent Camcorder and tripod, so will be happy to set that up and post it up.

Looking forward to it guys!

Meet at MTR

caphun's picture

I'll aim to be at the MTR station around 6.30pm and wait for about 15 mins to see if anyone would join me in the walk up to Tony's place. I'll wear by Barcamp T-shirt in the MTR closest exit so should be instantly recognisable :-)

Btw, which is the closest exit?

Ah found it!

Great meeting y'all

spyderboy's picture

Thanks to everyone who came to our first HKDUG meet up! Most especially Dave who gave us an awesome presentation on CCK and Views, and has inspired me to seriously consider what it will take to ditch D5 for D6 at work...

We would be happy to host another meetup in a month or so. But maybe we can do another kind of meetup in a couple weeks?

I will post the vid of Dave's presentation asap... watch for the link here and on Facebook!

Cheers!

Thanks for hosting

Thanks Antonio, your hospitality is awesome!

Thanks for presenting Dave. Views2 is a real eye opener and another excuse to upgrade ;)

Looking forward to the next meet-up!

A new Flickr group

cloneofsnake's picture

Thanks Tony & Dave!

I've created a new Flickr group to share pictures - http://www.flickr.com/groups/drupal-hk/

Since it's a small group, I'm gonna make everyone admins on there, ok?

Photos are up!

caphun's picture

I've uploaded the photos I took on the day to the Flickr group. Sorry, didn't take much shots and I forgot a few peoples names :( Please let me know if you are one of them.

Thanks,

Ca-Phun

If anyone was feeling overwhelmed by my presentation of Views the other day. You might want to take a look at this new module called Simple Views which provides a simpler interface to make views with:
