Recurring Events (conferences) with Organic Groups

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I have a site where someone hosts yearly workshops / events. They would like to add new events while also seeing past events.

I am going to use Organic groups for the events so that there is a social aspect.

How would you suggest breaking down the groups by year of the event? I was thinking sub groups ?

OG is intended to relate

OG is intended to relate a group of users to content items included in that group. I'm not sure using OG to create "timeframe groups" would be useful unless you were talking about "Class of 1970" or something like that. Maybe I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish and how you have your users grouped.

Clarification on Usage

@mreyher,

Thanks for the quick reply. Based on what I have seen OG can also work like sub-sites by associating a piece of content with another.

For example event#1 is a group. I would then make additional posts (pages) that are associated with event#1 such as, schedule, handouts, contact, etc.. Similar to how the COD distribution works. So now people can join the event and communicate with each other, creating a social aspect for the event.

This is great for one time events, but I was thinking of using OG subgroups for each year of the event, so that I could have event#1 2012. This would keep the main link the same for every year because the new information is being posted in the "parent" group as well.

I'm doing something similar

I'm doing something similar with a "series" of events (races) that are under the same brand. I create a group for the series and than can create event content items that are within the group. The "static" link could be to the group document that contains and describes the series of events.

I have not considered OG subgroups for each of the instance of the event.
