do expanded menus dissipate internal link authority for seo ?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hi,

we just finished changing our site over from a flat file format (everything hanging off / , to a 3 directory level structure with a parallel menu scheme.

We're using the garland drop down menu theme and we're trying to
a) understand why our site is underperforming
b) understand how link authority is affected by internal links and
c) wondering if the expanded menus option in the drop down menus dissipates internal link authority w.r.t. seo ?

Any tutorials on b and answers w.r.t. c would be wonderful.

Thanks,
DK

What's the URL? It depends on how you built the menus.

What do you mean by "underperforming"? Are you trying to rank for specific keywords?

Every link on your page consumes some of the link strength / authority. The more links you have the less link strength each linked page will receive. If you want to give more power to certain pages you will need to link pages that are less important less frequently. You will not achieve this without changing your main navigation menu.

I wouldn't say the "more links you have" but the more pages you have, the more work you will have in making those pages strong, (have a high PR). I've never seen a site lose PR or SERPs by linking to thousands of it's own pages. Many people use the nofollow attribute on content they don't care about like their privacy statement and contact page, which is one way to sculpt your PR, but even that won't make a huge difference, it's just one tiny piece in the huge puzzle.

Homepage Menu?

I see if you click the "About Kettlebells" link on the homepage, you get a different menu for the about menu that links to more content. I would think you would want that drop down menu on the homepage, so the SE's see it right away and basically give that content the value it deserves. There's no problem with the SE's following your links, so you don't have to worry about that, and don't worry about passing your PR value to these links, that's a non issue.

You do want to fix your categories though, so that all the content in the about section follow the hierarchy of the site. For instance your urls under the about section should be:
about/training
about/articles
about/kettlebell-links
about/swing
about/rack

You just don't want to go more then 5 deep, so about/rack/info/color/size is the very max you would ever want to do with sub categories.
