Featured Presentation

Introduction to Aegir
Christian Pearce (pearcec)
xforty technlogies (www.xforty.com)

The Aegir hosting system is a Drupal hosting system based on the provision and hostmaster projects. Combined these projects provide a frontend (hostmaster) for managing websites and a backend (provision) for managing the server. The hostmaster project makes installing, upgrading, backing up and migrating Drupal sites simple (haha). The provision project is the heavy lifter behind the scenes automating the tasks you direct on the hostmaster. In my presentation, I will cover installation, key concepts, touch upon drush makefiles, discuss a development workflow, provide a demo, and answer all your questions.

50 Minute walk through

pearcec's picture

Hi Everyone,

I just did a walk through of Aegir for a partner of ours. It ran about 50 minutes with some QA along the way. Is that too long?

Does Aegir Compare to Drush?

Gregsim's picture

I am sorry if this is a naive question. Last month we heard about Drush, a command line system (not a module) to make Drupal maintenance easier. Now you have a set of modules to make Drupal maintenance easier. Are these competitive systems? Or do they play different roles?

different roles, but increasing overlap

fen's picture

IANAAG (I am not an Aegir guy) but I'll give you my take: Aegir is a complete distributed instance management system while Drush is a command line shell and scripting interface for Drupal. The Drush folk are very into providing every tool they can to make Drupal maintenance easier, and many of the commands in Drush provide capabilities useful for distributed site management, see e.g., http://drupal.org/node/670460

Given time and effort, I think one might be able to recreate most if not all of Aegir functionality with a set of Drush scripts, but Aegir has it already built for you. For many of us that don't need all the functions of Aegir, using Drush is much easier (and the learning curve for Drush scripting is very small - it's much easier writing Drush scripts to interact with Drupal than it is to, say, create new Drupal modules). But then, that's a command line script, not a module.

I'm not sure what the Aegir folk are up to, but I would not be surprised to find out that they are considering refactoring portions of their code into Drush scripts.

Actually half of the Aegir system is written on top of Drush. The provision project. http://drupal.org/project/provision

Cross post to Aegir hosting system?

pearcec's picture

Not sure if it is going to be helpful, but you might want to cross post this into Aegir hosting system group.

Why not to post this also at

Why not to post this also at http://community.aegirproject.org/calendar ?

The Aegir group on g.d.o is no longer used, so any related events can be posted also on the c.a.o site.

Question

Link's picture

I was just curious if this particular meeting and/or presentation would be beneficial for a newbie to Drupal. My place of work asked that myself and another co-worker attend the monthly meetings to help familiarize ourselves with Drupal as a huge site we're to be working on soon will be run by Drupal. Are there any "beginner" type presentations, etc. that will be at this meeting (or any in the near future) or is this month's presentation more for intermediate/advanced users?

If you have the desire and

sshivell's picture

If you have the desire and time to come to a drupal meetup, I would highly recommend attending regardless of the complexity or simplicity of the topic involved. Tonight's presentation isn't the simplest of concepts in Drupal but it's also not the most complex. If you're going to managing a site for your company or a client and aren't completely familiar with how drupal even works, you'll at least walk away from this presentation with an understanding of some of the concepts and ways that sites can be managed, which tends to be a universal problem anyway. Failing that you'll at least meet everyone, get pizza (i hope?) and be able to discuss with others in person issues or questions you have.

Speaking of Pizza ...

... Yes, there will be some.

If you're planning on coming, chime in and let us know what you like (or don't like) on your pies. Here is the link to the signups.

Megan and I will attend tonight. Plain ole sausage or mushrooms is plenty good on pizza any time. We could bring some diet dews if anyone is intrested.

I'll bring some drinks of the

I'll bring some drinks of the non-alcoholic variety. Do you know if there will be cups available?

I don't know about cups...

... but it couldn't hurt to have a few. If necessary I can grab some on my way up, or if someone else has cups and can bring them, speak now!

Pitt WiFi Access -- IMPORTANT!

marktfrey's picture

Pitt's WiFi is only accessible to Students, University Employees, and Registered Guests. Fortunately, our host has volunteered to preregister those who would like access tonight, so we don't have to fumble around with it during the meetup. If you want to get set up beforehand, please send your first & last name and email to me.

Here's my contact form (you'll have to be logged in to G.D.O. to see): http://groups.drupal.org/user/49586/contact, or if you're not on G.D.O., message @drupalpgh on twitter or find me on IRC in #drupal-pgh.

Thanks for having me

I wanted to follow up with the makefiles and scripts I use for building drupal sites. I mentioned they are own github.com. Feel free to use them or copy/clone them.
