Dear Organizers,
I would like to thank you first for this much needed event, hoping that it would be organized more frequently, Sadly, i would not be able to attend this time. I have about 7 years of Drupal experience including localization, theming and module hacking (although it seems less and less needed with new releases; Again, let me express my extreme interest in this event, howerver, i couldnt , neither on facebook nor here figure out the event's location.
Thank you again, and hoping to hear from you soon,
Walid Abu Saifan.
When's the next workshop?
Hi,
I just landed in Beirut and drupal has been on my todo list for sometime. I have a small project in mind and I think Drupal would be the perfect tool.
Cheers,
Naim
Indeed another workshop is needed
Hello,
Indeed another workshop for drupal is needed it has been a long time since the last workshop. I don't mind if it is fee based workshop. I have one concern is how to transform a psd into a working theme in drupal.
Let us make the group active by particpating and sharing experience.
Kind Regards,

Try Zen
If you're familiar with HTML/CSS, drupal themes and template files in general, use the starting theme Zen for a powerful base for your themes. It has an amazing documentation as well.

It didn't happen
Actually the workshop mentioned didn't make it. I don't know exactly the details but it was canceled as far as I know.
But I agree a workshop is needed. @dmnabti might be the person to talk to to.
Layal
dmnabti?
Sorry, couldn't find a user by the name dmnabti.
I used to be an active member of the LLUG (Lebanese Linux User Group) many years ago. This drupal group brings back memories.. Anyway, hope this would happen again soon, I'll certainly help out in anyway I can.
Very Helpful Comments
Dear layalk, naim
layalk, thank you for sharing the webinar link and your advice on zen starter theme; truely I find them of high importance.
naim, your help is very much appreciated we as Lebanon Drupal Group we should be more active have more meetings to share experiences and knowledge. Let us make it happen.
Thank you again layalk.

Let's Act!!
So basically what we can do is organize a meeting somewhere to re-activate the Lebanese LUG and Drupal groups. Let us set a date and place to meet and talk about previous experiences and how to pick it up. As a first step, i suggest that interested people would submit the days of the week most suitable for such a meeting and maybe a time range (i.e. MWF 5pm --->7pm ...) and we can then set the date and time, the place would most probably be in a pub or so, I can hook us up with a pub in Sanayeh, Hamra. So if any interest please reply.
Thank you,
Walid.
I'm in
count me in. For me, MWF 6+ is good
I am in too
I am in W-TH-F 6:00 PM + but I disagree on the meeting place. Pubs usually dim, crowded and lots of noise and smoking.
I'd rather gather 50+ person create a workshop event advertise it on social media such as facebook by creating event, page; make the event fee based 100.00 - 50.00 $ choose well trained and knowledgeable in the matter speakers. Meeting should be every month or every other month or even evey quaters. Discussions should start from basic concepts and progress to creating actively maintained project on drupal by the group. This is what I call beneficial meetings.
Kind Regards,
Ihab Arnous
mmmm...
Dear Ihab,
Your suggestion is very interesting, however, as a first step, we need to meet a casual meeting first to get to know each other, network, and coordinate for what to do in the future. As for the suggestion above, i think it could be done for a later step. Also, just wanted to note that 50 attendees for a preliminary meeting, out of experience, is a very ambitious number. a for meeting in a pub, it would have been reserved for us, but since now dmnabti suggested ALTcity, i suppose it is a good place to meet in. I have been there and it is a suitable venue. To conclude, the meeting i am suggesting at first does not have to do with drupal technicalities as much as with organization and coordination for the drupal group and LUG to start having some events and meetups ...
on another note, personally, i am totally against the business oriented entrepreneur model of meetings and workshops. I wouldn't pay 50-100 USD to attend a drupal event . As for technical training workshops, that is another idea. But for conferences and meetups, i believe that basically it would be AGAINST the core and idea of open source to ogranize a paid CISCO or MS like event where participants have to pay to attend and signup for quick or crash courses, usually those events are used to market products and services, and i think that the market notion and all the fuzz around it is what OSS is not really about.
both approaches are good ... just different ...
I think both kinds of gatherings are good .... free meetings, community gatherings, meetups, barcamps, etc ... and paid intensive workshops / trainings.
People can (and should!) be making money off of using Drupal, both as a web developer (consultant/freelance or a design firm), or as a company / startup using Drupal in their own project. So seems fine to me for such trainings to be paid. Maybe combine them with free (or very cheap) workshops/trainings for civil society initiatives, student groups, etc...
As for location ... I'm location agnostic ... could happen anywhere. Happy to host at AltCity ... happy to attend elsewhere. We're looking to do a lot of stuff at AltCity like this, since it's part of our work/principles/objectives, but we're also still setting things up, moving offices, etc, and I think this stuff should rotate around to whomever wants to host... So I'm fine with this meeting happening at Walid's pub in Sanaya ... (as long as it is a good, functional place, as was brought up, but Walid thinks it's good...).
It's a hectic few weeks for me (back to Lebanon Oct 17th, gone Oct 20-24, conference the following weekend, etc, etc etc...), so not sure I'll be able to attend personally (maybe someone else from the AltCity team could attend, I'll check on that once the date is confirmed .... ), but rest assured we're on board, happy to support, co-organize, host, promote, etc.
Cheers,
DMN
Regarding Fees
Dear mareshal,
Totally in agreement , let's first have our familiarity meeting doesn't matter where about. Fee based training workshops in order to have some sort of commitment by the speakers and to pay the workshops expenses.
Thanks

Ihab Arnous
Hello Guys, My comment will
Hello Guys,
My comment will be a reply to two subjects:
1- Open source and knowledge sharing in Lebanon:
I am among those who are trying to find a solution for the problem that we have, which is organizing events and meet ups, with experience i settled with building a wiki that can be used for a reference or think of it as a hub to locate groups of people and communicate with them. I opted for a wiki to let any body contribute with content, which means if you are a group, business, individual, etc... you can add a page to promote yourself and for people to reach you. Also you can add/edit common pages or suggest something that you think is suitable to add. The wiki will only serve this purpose so any activity will go into a group like this one or linux or whatever.
The wiki is located at : http://osclb.org, and i added a page about the drupal lebanon group: http://osclb.org/index.php/Lebanese_drupal_users_group
@mareshal you can also add a page for the LUG as well.
2- Drupal workshop:
I can volunteer to share my experience with the process of building websites from design to integrating with drupal.
I agree about not one workshop but many to target many topics.
Topics that i can think of are:
There a lots of other topics and one workshop is not enough to tackle all of them.
I can be available week-ends whole day.
Cheers
Lebanon Drupal/LEGLUG/Ubuntu/etc Meetups!!
Hi Folks!
Sorry didn't respond earlier ... but great to have some conversation going on some of this stuff!! ... and sorry for the confusion... @dmnabti (on twtr) = dmnzone (on drupal). Thanks @layalk (aka @nights) for the heads up...
I tried a few times to activate / encourage / support some of the Linux/Ubuntu/open source groups in Lebanon ... met some great people, but seemed that most groups were not really active. Hopefully some momentum can build up for some of that stuff.
As for meeting up, organizing regular meetings, workshops, meetups (social + info/work gatherings), competitions, etc ... FOR SURE. We are very interested in hosting much of that stuff at AltCity (www.altcity.me) ... happy to have a monthly meetup on any of those topics, and even more interested to work with folks to organize workshops or competitions or hacker weekends, etc ... basically anything that brings tech+opensource+activism together ... and let's get going with some cool shit. Yaaaaaaaaaa.....
We're happy to spend some time on the organizing-side of things as well, but would want to do that with some other core collaborators who are particularly keen on a topic. .... and in my opinion, this stuff is best done in a series, since awareness of some of these things is low, and we need to work to build momentum on these things. Soooo, I find a monthly drupal gathering a more compelling thing to work on than a one-time one-day drupal workshop ... the workshop, though, can come as (and would be awesome as) part of the medium-/long-term community building.
Ya? Thoughts? I'm outside Lebanon now for two weeks, back Oct 17 ... could organize an initial gathering-of-the-minds any time to get people together and working on a specific track ...
Also, if anyone is interested, we're also organizing some activities in November related to social entrepreneurship (as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week in Lebanon, Nov 14-26) ... send me a msg (dmn [at] altcity [dot] me) or sign up for our newsletter (over at www.altcity.me) to stay updated on that stuff ...
Cheers!

[UPDATE: Just changed my old Drupal username (dmnzone) to my standard/universal username (dmnabti) ... easier that way.)

Yo! Did this slip by? Cool event next week; & Drupal meetup?
Hi All-
I didn't remember hearing anything back from anyone about this ... checked my email ... and then checked this site. It seems that this didn't get confirmed?? Unless some people understood otherwise, and are meeting somewhere now? If not, or even if so ... there is an event coming up next week that I think YOU ALL should come to!!
Hackerspace meetup Beirut
https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=162698997157996
Event starts at 7:22pm, at AltCity media / tech / social impact collaboration space (Hamra) ...
How about we have the Drupal meetup right before that? 6pm-7pm? Then you all can / should stick around for the hackerspace meetup :-) . If we get three confirmations from this group ... then we'll consider the Drupal meetup on, and I'll set up a Facebook event, etc. Yes? Cool. If not, we can try again later another time. So, to recap:

Hi Folks-
Only 1 response so far, from 2 days ago ... anyone else? Please respond by today (Friday) or max tomorrow ... otherwise we won't bother to plan/promote this if nobody plans on coming ... would only take a few to make it worthwhile, and to start working on ideas to help build up this movement. (20 members on this group ... not even sure how many are active, interested in being active, or even in Lebanon??)
Orrrrr .... another time.
Cheers,
DMN
